A quick word on Monstera Epipremnoides to avoid some of the confusion: it is also a super rare plant and will not accidentally be sold in shops. Mick Mittermeier himself has had some trouble sourcing these kinds of plants. I apologise if I've made people think they might have Epipremnoides- it cannot be found in shops! You have Adansonii I promise! Lol 😂😅

Hi Kaylee! First of all, I love your videos, especially your rare plant indexes, hauls and just your general aura! You make amazing videos basically! Now, I am so confused between the three forms - of course, I clearly see the differences when you show them in this video, however all adansoniis are very different I find. On the Swedish bidding market place "Tradera", a lot of people are selling them :) Can you make a more in depth video on how to differentiate the three forms, with more different plants of the same form or something? Good work!

My grandfather was a rare plant collector and he had an obliqua and it was his pride and joy it only had two small leaves but when he died he requested my step nan to have it be donated to kew gardens and they now have it in a private archived collection in his name

The obliqua is cool because of its rarity - but if it wasn't so rare and someone offered me the choice between it and adansonii, I'd take the adansonii. I like to see my plants grow new leaves, etc. I don't think I'd like just having runners grow from my plant. I guess if I owned it I would keep it in a vivarium then with humidity and artificial light. For me I'm happy with adansonii- but cool to know! I hope people don't destroy these delicate plants by harvesting too many from the wild

Nevertheless, it is a fast proliferator rather than a fast grower. You can let the new plants cover the ground instead of climbing. That is, if you have the suitable conditions.

I bought a monstera "obliqua" in my local dobbies garden centre. It was labelled at £50. I took it to customer services and told them it was definitely not an obliqua and it looked a bit frazzled. They reduced it to 12.99. Its deffo not an obliqua. But I love it anyway

Such an interesting video! I did know about the Obliqua being extremely rare. I bought an Adonsonii at my local garden centre which was labelled as an Obliqua, I went and told an employee that they were labelling it wrong but they wouldn't listen to me. Oh well. Also thanks for clearing something up, I have got two Adonsonii's but they look quite different. Which always had me puzzled. But I now think one is the round form and the other is the regular form. Now I really want to add an Adonsonii narrow form to my collection haha

I suppose it's just if people are collectors. If you want to complete a collection you don't necessarily have to love every part of it. Like catching every Pokémon. Especially the rare ones.

I bought a beautiful Monstera Obliqua (that's how it was labeled) a couple months ago at my local nursery. It was looking very good with big leaves and I didn't knew the plant so I bought it. this video made me realize that it is not an Obliqua but its an Adonsonii. Lucky for me it was only 12 euros :) but maybe I should let the nursery know when I see it the next time cause I generally think they don't know the difference. Thanks for the amazing video with so much information! my Adonsonii is doing great btw. its climbing on a little wooden stairs I made.

Kaylee Ellen Definitely 😂 Sadly, many plants get mislabeled - I even saw m. deliciosa labeled as a ficus?! And where I live many people still think of m. deliciosa as a philodendron. :/ Then they think I am crazy when I tell them they are calling it wrong 😒

I’m assuming this doesn’t apply anymore? I see lots of obliqua these days, maybe after this video folks started to capitalize on the ‘rarity’ of the plant. I’ve watched other plant KZfaqrs lately referencing that people ‘pretended it was rare and fragile’…wondering if anyone can comment on this, or @kayleeellen herself?

It’s not rare anymore and you can grow them in house conditions I grow mine on a windowsill in my bedroom and it’s not making runners yet and I’m currently growing a cutting in my grow tent to compare it with the one in my room

Fantastic and Scholarly presentation. People ought to wonder why such-and-such is Rare and Costly. For obliqua, it's because its fussy and grows painfully slow. So pleased to see you showcasing the various forms of obliqua which no one in N. A. will ever see. I hope this helps many collectors. TYVM!

Update: 2022 August... The market is about to be flooded with Obliqua. As the pandemiv boom seems to die down, people are now letting go of a temporary hobby, as they're not indoors constantly any longer, and thus have no more infinite time to fuss over their plants. Professional players on the market have been growing obliqua Peru for the last 3 years from these runners, and now have hundreds, if not thousands of this plant in stock! So, from thousands, it'll now be around 200 for a small, rooted plant or a few nodes.

We sell Adansonii at work. I'd pass on an Obliqua, anytime. Their are many other more beautiful plants. Especially since they will actually grow and be enjoyed with all the hard work, fertilizer (and micros, etc), and money value

I would like to congratulate you on your beautiful and thorough work on the differences between Monstera Obliqua and Monstera Adansonii. Particularly I have some copies of M. Adansonii here at home. Very beautiful. I believe I saw M. Obliqua somewhere here in Brazil. I don't remember where. But, finally, I may be wrong, but it is so common and so easy to find rare species here in Brazil due to the richness of our diverse flora, that for many people it is natural to own or live among so many rare and fantastic species. Very interesting and informative video, thank you!! I'd only comment on the adansonii pronunciation, the double ii is a prolonged eee and the obliqua is obliCOOa, in Latin, what you see, is what you pronounce 😊 To be honest, I prefer the adansonii, the obliqua looks a bit sickly with all these holes. Not that I would mind having one, of course!!! The runners are so cool, though!! Have a great day!!

Great video. I (and I think all of you followers) really appreciate the work you put in. I saw a adansonii listed as obliqua today at our local nursery and was sceptical. I asked the staf and they confirmed that the plant is a „true obliqua which justifies a price tag of almost 100€”. Now having actually seen this video I am very very sure that the plant was a narrow form of adansonii. Love #itsneverobliqua 😂🌱

This was a very interesting video. I just repotted my Adansonii Narrow Form, thanks to you I know the name now. I propagated the plant two years ago in a propagation class I took at a local nursery. They called it a Swiss Cheese Vine. Very Helpful to know the actual name.

I know this is an old video. But could not resist to not comment on this informative video. Today In San Francisco bay area Home Depot a big box store. there were hundreds of plants in different sizes from $9.98 to $19.98 and all were labelled Oblique!! Not for a second believed it. However I bought a (most probably a round form Adansonii) very healthy one for $9.98. Thank you Kaylee I am watching your videos for a while now. This video was very informative. Thank you.

There was an adansonii cutting I bought for 5$ at a flower shop and they said it was a monstera deliciosa. Didn't really matter to me. It's still pretty, but goes to show how easy things can be mislabeled. I didn't even know mine was a 'rounded' until your video. So your video is very informative! :)

I think this kind of video is such an important topic to touch base on, specially now that growing plants has become the next trendy hobby. I've always collected plants, ever since I was 10 years old, and have seen so many people confused over some plants common name, never mind the scientific one! People mislabel plants all the time, sometimes on purpose, sometimes it's just a small mistake, and when you add up hybrids and specific collection points or 'forms' of certain plants it becomes really confusing and easy to do. People out there just need to be aware that what truly matters is that you like your plant, no matter what it is. It can become a little unhealthy when we hunt down plants just because they are rare, or nobody else has it, we should grow plants because we like them. Also, be realistic on what you grow, don't go thinking you'll be able to grow a saguaro in an apartment to it's full potential or an oak on your window sill. If you want to keep them it's perfectly good, I'd do it, but understand that if you want that kind of look you might have to get a plant that looks the part but isn't necessarily the exact one you wanted. Love all the videos, I really enjoy how you do research and really make an effort to properly identify plants and make everything as clear as possible. Keep them coming ;)

Monstera Obliqua is sold at around $8 for a two-leaf rooted cutting in China now. For $20, you can get a fairly large one with 20-ish leaves.

Thank you for this video! It definitely explains how rare obliqua is (and very unsustainable/ impractical as a houseplant?) As I said on your previous post, I was able to get a hold of something labeled M. Leichtlinii which (due to some google search) I believed is a hybrid of obliqua - I found it listed somewhere as a M. Obliqua "Leichtlinii" but now I believe it's just a round form of Adansonii or something very similar - it's definitely not regular or narrow form though. But your video has been very helpful to me to somewhat closely identify what I have :D

Great video, fantastic effort! The only thing I'd say that everybody in English speaking world seems to butcher the Latin names of plants. It's not Adansoni-eye, it's Adansoni-e. Oxx

Thank you, I would comment on the pronunciation as well. Latin pronunciation is pretty straightforward, in fact I'll be making a video on that. I think the second "i" is added for accent purposes 😃

Correct. And the same goes for Obliqua: the correct pronounciation is oblekwa, not obleka.

Stumbled upon this video while looking for something else and gotta say that i was super impressed with the content, never imagined a youtube video with such amount of factual details and quality information. Smashed the Like button I wonder if anyone could help me to understand if there's different varieties of a Monstera Adansonii which trails, i have 2 of them and one grows vertically but the other trails like Pathos, it was so hard to get it and it was the last 3 that could find that were abandoned at a local shop. Its also Interesting to know that there's multiple sellers here in Malaysia selling Obliqua, thanks for this detailed video which help identify them, and yes their prices are shocking but still much cheaper than the UK i guess.

I have an adansonii and after watching this video I now know it is the narrow form. Listening to you talk about the difficult environment to replicate to grow the obliqua I’ll stick to my adansonii... also I don’t have $800 for a plant anyway 🤷🏽‍♀️ but it is beautiful!

Thank you so much for making this video! It was incredibly interesting and extremely informative. I had no idea the obliqua was THAT rare! All I knew was I wouldn't find it, ever, even by accident. I had assumed it was because it was too fickle a plant, not that it is this wondrous, stunning unicorn--and fickle. They are such beautiful plants, but I am very, very pleased with my adansonii (that was properly sold as an adansonii at the local hardware store--of all places! I was SHOCKED!) How did you manage to not constantly be holding that beautiful lil' obliqua? --I wouldn't be able to put it down, let alone keep from staring upon it in sheer awe! Me, watching this 3 years later with 3 Obliqua Peru-form, multiple successful node (runner) propagations…and several other “Obliqua-complex” plants in my possession. The Ecuadorian exporters have opened the door to the Amazonian Rainforest, while also spearheading conservation efforts and ecotourism throughout their country. I have over 200 aroids that would have been unfathomable to own a decade ago. Some are still quite costly, but no longer thousands of dollars.

First, I have learned so much from your videos and watch them and review them often. Thank you. You are a great and generous teacher! Im still a little confused about adonsonii-- How is it possible to tell the difference between laniata versus regular adonsonii (narrow or wide), especially when it's in its juvenile state? Or how would I know im buying a laniata versus a large/mature leaf of adonsonii? I think I can see the difference between wide and narrow adonsonii, but cant figure out the laniata...I would like to collect all three forms. Thank you!!!

For anyone arriving at this video in 2024 or later, the obliqua is now readily available and you should probably not buy one for more than $40 unless you either want to or it's a well-maintained and large plant. A number of years ago, these cost 3 figures, but this is just not true anymore. The same is true for literally every other rare plant. I find white princesses, pink princesses, thai constellation monsteras and variegated elephant ears at my local danish nursery and you can now get the obliqua (or a similar plant with frills, massive amounts of holes and super thin leaves) for €20 or less some places online. Plants can be propagated. As soon as they reach the public, it doesn't take long for prices to plummet and availability to sky-rocket. Of course, new rare plants will arrive. You can choose to pay a premium for these now or you can pay $20 in three years when the hype has died down a bit and they are made more readily available. Personally, as a broke university student, I will choose the second option every time and have a €30 monstera obliqua on its way to my door as I'm writing this comment.

Wonderful and informative video! :) I have just a regular run off the mill Adansonii that I got for dirt cheap but it's my pride and joy. Can't wait to see a Rare plant index on Monsteras!
