This is such an important, CORE component of improving at Monster Hunter. While it does apply to the other weapons, HH only has dodging and positioning to deal with the monsters' assault. This is even more prominent for the Horn. You were able to put it into words, and also explain some of the abstract concepts, which can be difficult to comprehend. Thank you kindly, Taxman.

This isn't just applicable to HH, but to other melee weapons as well. Read and react accordingly to deal consistent damage without overcomitting is basically what it mostly comes down to. Weapons with shield and counters have different ways to react on these situations but weapons that rely mostly on the basic dodge like IG, HH, SwAxe, SnS(cant backhop all the time), etc., this vid will also benefit them. Great video and keep up the good work. Salamat!

Great video. The “cycle of the battle dance” is a very useful conceptual tool that explains, say, why it is sometimes difficult to learn new weapons. Shield weapons have a more complex process of reacting to the incoming attack, as the player has to decide whether to evade or deliberately stand the ground and block, and whether to counterattack after the block, block again, or reposition. Very fast weapons, like dual blades, can also be difficult to get used to coming from a slower weapon, and vice versa, because the combo delay (the time after an attack during which the hunter can input the next attack in chain or evade out) is significantly different. And as you have emphasized with the concept of consistent, as opposed to continuous, offensive, a good choreography of the back and forth interaction between the hunter and the monster has an important but less obvious component that is a deliberate pause in between the attacks.
@sjames551
@sjames551 4 жыл бұрын
Despite being dedicated to HH, this video also serves as a good general purpose guide for melee hunting basics. The idea of pacing yourself to only attack when punishing a monster's openings rather than constantly doing hits and just healing off the damage is something every melee weapon can use.
@dzakub85

@hal0ist
@hal0ist 4 жыл бұрын
Totally agree with the point made at 10:31. You can't do damage if you keep getting hit and have to heal, because you tried to attack as much as possible instead of attacking more consistently. It's one of the reasons why I don't use, and will always discourage the use of damage meter mods for players who aren't experienced enough yet. We as humans are naturally competitive by virtue of nature's rule: survival of the fittest. When you can constantly see the damage bar/numbers of others in your quest and they outperform you, you instinctively want to catch up as fast as possible. This will, in most cases, lead to taking more risks just so you can get more hits in to close the gap, and the "battle dance" will be subconsciously discarded in favour of the brute force style. You'll start to chase numbers instead of learning to play the game better. I'd also like to point out that some mantles in the game (especially Rocksteady) just outright encourage players to brute force instead of learning to play better. Why dodge/position properly when you can just facetank attacks (and hopefully heal the damage back with health regen)? Most people don't care until they take too much damage and have to pot, but then revert to the same mentality once they reach acceptable hp. Some of you might get defensive reading this, but ask yourself this: Do you really enjoy brute forcing the game and then carting and failing the quest more often than others, or would you rather learn the game better and play more effectively? Keep in mind that I'm directing this question to the less experienced hunters out there, since I've seen this happen not just in SOS, but in some MHW groups as well.
@Shadowtheoriginalone
@Shadowtheoriginalone 4 жыл бұрын
I'll preface my answer with this: I almost always take both Rocksteady and Temporal, use mainly the Blackveil Hazak set for most quests, and always take Vitality 3 and Stun Resist 3. Seeing , I would say I technically brute force my way sometimes with my Hunting Horn and Insect Glaive, but I don't get carted nearly as much, if at all. I actually despise getting carted at any point, even if I know the hunt will be hard. I still do try to understand positioning and dodge well, since I can only take so many health items even with speed eating and passive health recovery and getting knocked around like a ball at elementary school recess is hardly what I consider "fun". MHW is my very first Monster Hunter experience and I do enjoy learning the monster's patterns, attacks, hitboxes, etc. It's really rewarding to finish a hunt knowing that I didn't die and that my performance was pretty good. Yes, Rocksteady and Temporal breed bad habits but getting instagibbed while in Rocksteady due to attacks hitting multiple times and my songs being interrupted because of Temporal auto-dodge, that teaches you that you can't just go brain-dead and mash the attack button. I understand the importance of proper analysis. I sometimes feel bad when I'm not nearly as helpful in certain multiplayer hunts but that's short-lived and I prefer to stay alive and wait/heal rather than go in and get myself killed. I'm probably not the target for your discussion but I just felt I need to say something, since I take a lot of defensive skills that perhaps promote brain-dead play?
@hal0ist
@hal0ist 4 жыл бұрын
@@Shadowtheoriginalone The main point in my OP was that players tend to focus on the wrong stuff when they want to increase their damage output, which was emphasised by the video's point of doing damage consistently instead of attacking as much as possible. They sometimes try to copy speedrun builds then end up carting a lot since as said, they haven't learned the fight/game well enough to be able to use it effectively. As for you using lots of defensive skills, it seems that your objective isn't to increase damage output but to stay alive. In that case, I don't think there's anything wrong since using defensive skills does support your aim to stay alive. Not carting is one of the better things you can do in multiplayer anyway, since if a quest fails you don't get rewards at all (yeah I don't count partbreaks). So in the end, as long as your focus is on the right things to reach your goal, I don't really care if you "brain-dead" play the game. What matters then is if you have fun or not.
@Shadowtheoriginalone
@Shadowtheoriginalone 4 жыл бұрын
@@hal0ist Ah, I see. That's fair enough. Once one understands the game well enough, one can forego defenses in favor of more damage in builds. And when you forego defenses, you also have to keep in mind what you can and can't do, as this video shows, and the important of consistency instead of quantity, as you have said before.

The way you teach it is really amazing, this is not just great for HH, this should be applied no matter the weapon used :o I've been working on that mindset while trying to master the Ruiner Nergigante fight in solo for the current event. Couldn't agree more. Positioning and patience are key. That's why i never use any mantle, palico neither. It just feels great to completely wreck a monster 1 on 1, not because of brute forcing it with temporal, rocksteady, trap spam and constantly wall slamming, but rather knowing it's attacks, how to avoid/counter them and when to attack with the appropriate moves. That is why i love Monster Hunter. Compared to some other games, it doesn't become more boring the longer you've played it, but more fun instead since you get better too, not just your gear. 1800+ hours in World/Iceborne and still going, over 7000hours in MH total. It feels amazing to annihilate tempered elders in a few minutes, while only getting hit 2 or 3 times in the entire fight. I hope more players would try to learn this "battle dance", sadly i've seen players running straight into the monster's attacks instead of reacting accordingly. Positioning etc. is important for every weapon. Why do i always write these walls of text when talking about Monster Hunter. :/

You are the reason I now consider hunting horn one of my strongest weapons! I would love a video with all the attacks/patterns of a monster broke down, and suggestions on how to counter them. We somehow have thousands of speedruns videos, but it is hard to get a full picture of monsters' pattern when we are in a battle. This video gives me a taste but I need more ^^ I need to find more relax YT hunts I guess to take notes of the monsters' patterns

I just interpret it as if the HH is one infinite combo consisting with many 1 hit combos. It's so cool that almost any move is viable as long as you react accordingly. Not only do you have to learn the space positioning but also the time positioning. It's a space-time weapon.

After watching this video, I see my battle dance is on the right track, but much too aggressive. I see I need to work on the spacing and proper use of specific swings. Thanks for this guide.
