I think it's just karma. Groose and Stritch are the only ones that seemed to have changed just by interacting with Link, meanwhile Cawlin is still a jerk who can't seem to do his own confession without using a third party. He blamed Link for Groose getting depressed instead of seeing how he was being a bully (he followed along with the Loftwing theft).

@@comfortable_east I second this theory, though I do have another theory that the hand is specifically trying to possess Cawlin and needs something personal from him to do so; knowing that Cawlin is writing a love letter, Phoeni asks Link for paper, and this is why she gets sad and leaves when you give the letter to the correct person if you choose that route 🤔

The most terrifying thing about Skyloft, which I'd never thought off until Don's intro, isn't the ghost or the demon. IT'S THE INBREEDING! Thousands of years, a tight-knit community with no chance of meeting anyone from outside, and a total population of 41 including the islands that are only accessible through Loftwing? Good lord they must all be cousins, aunts and nephews of everyone else at the same time...
@Edboyda

@@Jenna_Talia big settlements are about the only thing I think games are missing these days. I don't care about ever improving textures and lighting, but Skyrim's bustling cities containing like 15 people has always really bothered me, though the inbreeding might explain why they all share the same 3 voices lol But I figured Skyloft was the same, it's meant to be a whole city, part of a wider civilisation, but it can only be portrayed as this small village because it's a game, and had to run on the aenemic Wii as an added handicap

Despite not being avian based, Batreaux's name does match with the names of the other Skyloft residents. He is obviously named after a bat, which as we know is a nocturnal flying mammal. Batreaux is also nocturnal, in a sense, since he only goes into town at night. He is not the first friendly monster in the Zelda series though. Various moblins give you rupees in the first game alongside a now famous tagline. The Minish Cap has Gina the Ghini (a ghost enemy) and Deku Scrubs (who tend to alternate between friend and foe in the series) who will match kinstones with you. And while he is a thorn in your side throughout the game, I feel that King Bulblin of Twilight Princess also deserves to be in the "friendly" category since you do eventually earn his respect and admiration. I would say there's an established pattern that not all monsters/demons like or approve of Ganon's way of doing things. Even members of his own tribe such as Nabooru disagreed and thought he went too far. Some just want to live in peace. When I last played Breath of the Wild I didn't attack enemy camps unless I had to. They can be quite friendly with the proper gear and will socialize with you. The look on their face when they find out you're an enemy or traitor is like a mixture of fear, anger, and disappointment. I certainly hope we get more friendly monsters in future games.

Speaking of King Bulblin my head cannon is that following Twilight Princess the Bulblin tribe became allied with Hyrule, possibly defending Hyrule from afar in exchange for supplies like food. They definitely became allied with the Hero Of Twilight at the minimum as King Bulblin acknowledges Link as stronger than Ganondorf.

I kind of always assumed Phoeni died on the toilet and that's why they're haunting it and asking for paper. If they died before being able to wipe, the spirit might have a lasting discomfort. Sort of how in pop culture if a person is beheaded, the ghost doesn't have their head. Whatever the cause of death is, often seems to carry over and bother ghosts in lots of stories. So maybe Phoeni had a disease/infection/heart attack from pushing too hard/ate Taco Bell and so pooping killed her?

You gave me a thought when you mentioned that Phoeni doesn't move on after being given paper. I also assume that if you never do anything with the paper, she will continue to haunt the toilet. However, as you point out, if you give the letter to Karane, Phoeni leaves, without any real explanation given. This seems to imply that getting Karane and Pipit together somehow resolved Phoeni's unresolved issue. It's a stretch to think of how, though.

I've always wondered about the funeral practices on Skyloft. There are like 9 or 12 grave sites in the small cemetery. If the people have been living there for hundreds to thousands of years already, then there should be more than a handful of graves. Do they throw their dead off of the island? Do they practice cannibalism (probably very unlikely)? Did they start burying their dead and then realized that the practice would take up too much of their limited land? If so, how old would those graves be? Could they be from the time when Skyloft was first lifted into the sky? Or, could the practice of burying their dead be exclusive to a select few members of Skyloft's history, such as important figures, which could help explain why there are so few graves? I feel like there could be some more much darker undertones to Skyloft other than Phoeni and Batreaux.
@AngelofGrace96
@AngelofGrace96 Жыл бұрын
I think the burial and then realising it takes up too much space idea would be very logical. Personally I think they'd go for cremation, since it seems the most practical yet respectful way to handle the dead.
@braedonrix3395
@braedonrix3395 Жыл бұрын
@@AngelofGrace96 Oh yeah, I forgot about cremation. I could totally see them having something similar to the Jedi funeral in Star Wars, where the body is burned in an open-air funeral. It would probably be done in front of the Goddess statue too, maybe like an act of returning one's soul to the Goddess or something like that. There could be a designated building with some sort of stone brick oven to hold and intensify the heat of a fire, making it easier to burn a body and make it so people don't have to watch the flesh of their loved one melt off. I don't recall there being any buildings in Skyloft that we can't enter though. Regardless of the method, the bones would still have to be turned to ash by grinding or crushing the brittle bones. Fire alone isn't enough to do that step automatically for us in real life. But once the bones become ash, I could see them scattering the ashes to the wind and sky. Maybe the ceremony would have the deceased person's loftwing involved somehow. That one island with the small bamboo forest would actually be the best source of fuel for that kind of fire. It grows relatively fast and it burns very well. Compared to the few trees that they have scattered around Skyloft, which seem to mostly be used to build infrastructure, that bamboo forest is quite literally perfect for this kind of funeral. It's probably not very often that people die on Skyloft anyways, so there is plenty of time for the bamboo to grow. But now there's a middle-aged man practicing mastering the sword by cutting down bamboo every day... that's probably not very good for the small forest. Okay, maybe there aren't as many darker undertones to Skyloft that I initially thought there was.

If you start getting into the logistics, Skyloft is really not big enough to have sustained a population for all this time. This is true of most video game towns, with the only exception I can think of being Assassin's Creed. So, I generally go with the working assumption that the in-game world is not a 1 to 1 model of a functional world, but a representation that must be small enough to actually fit in the game and not be cumbersome to the player. They probably COULD make a world that would be functional if it was real, but that's kind of... not the point, and would take time and resources away from the game they are actually trying to make. I love over thinking this stuff as much as the next person, but when it comes to these sorts of logistical issues, I tend to chalk it up to the limitations of the medium... because that rabbit hole leads to things like "totally inbred society subsisting entirely on pumpkins," which is not a fun theory to me, lol.
@braedonrix3395
@braedonrix3395 Жыл бұрын
@@BFDreaming I agree that the devs can't put every single detail of the lives of townsfolk into a game without it becoming way too expansive. For example, I doubt that the amount of pumpkins we see growing in game is enough to feed their entire population daily. We just have to assume that they can preserve food well enough, that they have alternative food sources, or they can magically make a pumpkin last for many meals. But why can't the logistics of Skyloft work? At the time of the game, their entire population consists of around 30 to 40 people (counting any extra knights and excluding Batreaux). Three of which are under the age of ten (one is a baby). Skyloft appears to have very low birth rates compared to what we see in real life. It seems like a child is born on Skyloft every few years, and, most parents seem to have one child at most. Based on appearances, it looks like there are a handful of people who could potentially be younger than Link and Zelda, but are older than the children. After that there are more older teenagers/young adults who are primarily all studying at the academy. Then another large portion of Skyloft's population are adults, ranging from younger adults to middle-aged adults, who are parents, merchants of some kind, or knights. The remaining few are senior adults and elderly, who are still working, have retired from working, or work at the academy. Everybody on the cluster of islands that make up Skyloft is definitely distantly related to each other. There's absolutely no way that after thousands of years that bloodlines haven't crossed over and mixed a few times. However, it seems like the Hyrulians are doing fine. And if the amount of people that they have in each age group shows for anything, it's that they know how to keep their numbers low enough to prevent overpopulation while still granting freedom to have children. Others, like that one clown minigame character who I forget the name of, probably won't have children. Or, what they call "thousands of years" doesn't correlate to our 365 day calendar at all. Maybe their years are significantly shorter than ours. Maybe Skyloft has only been in the sky for what would be a couple hundred years for us. We don't know how much time their calendar tracks before it's a new year for them. We do know that Skyloft is a legend to that one Goron on the surface, so they must have been in the sky for a long time. All we can do is think and theorize about it. But yes, this is fantasy and the rules that apply to their universe may not necessarily be similar in our world. However, there are lots of elements in Skyloft, and fantasy in general, that is based off of or inspired by the real world. For example, they have a capitalist society on Skyloft (they exchange rupees for goods and services), they grow crops for their food, they tame animals, they live in wooden houses, they use masonry to construct stone brick walls, towers, and stairs, knights follow an honor code, they have rules and regulations to air travel (like we have with cars), guys named Beedle are immortal and typically sell rarer or hard to obtain items, it's easy for some people to get under the influence of steroids to become swole faster, etc, etc. Even beyond that, there are fundamental laws of nature that are still obeyed, like the circle of life. With the circle of life comes death. With death comes funerals. What kind of funerals do the Hyruleans have on Skyloft? I don't know, but I'd like to think about it.

16:33 I think that it's less that Vaati and Ganondorf can't be redeemed and more that they seem to be huge trouble magnets. We do know that Ganondorf himself is an incarnation of Demise and it's likely that Vaati was inflicted by his Curse as well, so it's possible that the Curse eventually drives the people most influential to them mad, in the case of his caretakers Koume and Kotake, or causes events that eventually drive the victim mad, in the case of Vaati when Ezlo made the Mage's Cap. It would be interesting to see if Demise's Curse could be broken, and how this would effect the victim afterwards.

I'm pretty sure Batreaux was always a monster. He specifically said there is a legend among monsters that they can become human if enough gratitude crystals are gathered. I wonder if he always sympathized with people and was able to stow away when Skyloft was raised because there was no ill intent in his heart for the people there? I imagine there must be a filter like that on the cloud barrier to keep monsters from reaching Skyloft. Maybe Giraham was powerful enough that his senses and spells could penitrate the barrier but he couldn't. And all the monsters you encounter on Skyloft are pretty weak, just keese and chu creatures. That's probably all Batreaux' aura can generate on its own without any active help from him. Basically just the "body heat" radiating off him.

The Knight Academy as we know it is only 25 years old as of SS, but apparently it started out as a kendo school and the humans were building up a military almost from the moment they were sent up to Skyloft. Indeed, if Batreaux was around prior to that point (which is definitely conceivable given the decrepit nature of his house), it's quite possible that she was killed by some of the monsters he inadvertently summoned.

So is Gonzo's grandfather immortal? He's heavily implied to have lived on the surface at some point.
@MonsterMaze
@MonsterMaze Жыл бұрын
I think Gonzo's dad sent robots to the surface to salvage stuff. I don't think he visted there himself. Unless I'm missing a piece of info. Most people in Skyloft imply that there is nothing below the surface at all. Just a vast nothingness. That's what they believe anyway... They've been lied to by the older generation.

16:33 I really, REALLY want to see an LoZ game where you actively work with Ganon or at least play as him. We genuinely don't know an incredible amount of info for his side of the story in the legends, only the bystanders' perspective (i.e., not directly from Link, but mythos and rumor). Edit: For example, a game where Demise is a separate entity from Ganondorf and had actually made a deal with Demise in order to gain his abilities.

Happy Halloween Don, another great video and the "Curious Case" series might be a premature title, but it instantly got me excited after the Kakariko video and would make a great playlist with more in the future perhaps. "The Curious Case of ..." [village/town] could be a fun little recurring one for your fans. As always, this video was amazing and definitely a treat this Halloween

Hopefully would be an easier option when working on your bigger videos and the community wins by getting more Monster Maze and a topic they love. Imagine if Pheoni was a living npc with her own side quest. What if she was a more experienced knight than Pipit and the side quest is that link and her go on the surface and unlock some sort of mini dungeon that would require both of you to beat it. When you beat the dungeon you get a heart container but Phoeni says she wants to stay on the surface for a little while for the sake of exploration. After some time link would find out, somehow, that she's in danger and needs help. You can go back and fight alongside her against a large hoarde of enemies but if you don't go back in time she dies and turns into a ghost and haunts skyloft/the knight academy.

@@MonsterMaze I did and one of my favourite stories for a Zelda game. I have had LoZ:SS since launch (Wii) but I was one of the people who didn't get on with the motion controls. The pad controls made it much better (especially on the joycon Vs the Pro controller, a rare change). Coupled with my bad habit of not finishing games (especially Zelda ones).
