In this episode we explore 4 of the Most Modeled High Gain Amps so you can hear what the actual ones sound like! The Axe-FX, Kemper, Helix and Neural DSP, UAD all model many types of High Gain amps. Dave Onorato and me decided to check out the real ones to see what they sounded like back to back.

Nice video! I did my graduation project about simulations vs the real amps, I didn't get to compare all the amps that I planned and the start thought. I reamped a guitar with Fractal, Line 6 and a Fender amp, and then I made a blind test in order to know if players and producers were able to notice with one was the real amp... And I found that almost no one was able! That makes me think that simulations are getting better every day. Cheers! PD: I got the Beato Book and it's amazing! I'm using it for my classes planning 😁

Clint is wrong. The amps sound much better in person. This is why people get amp modelers over real amplifiers because people think they sound as good. It does sound good, but it's not the actual amp with the actual speakers. A real amplifier with a cabinet, in person, will make the hair on the back of your neck stand up because there is a natural phenomenon that occurs with the combination. Microphones cannot pick this natural phenomenon up. It's like listening to a keyboard vs hearing a real grand piano in person. If you just want studio quality sound, this is fine. But if you want pure natural sound, the tube is where it's at. This is fact, I'm not being biased.
@rhitosparsha
@rhitosparsha 3 жыл бұрын
I don't think it is true. In his other videos, he has the amps in the control room, while the cabs are in the soundproofed and isolated live room. So I'm pretty sure it was the same in this video as well. Of course, there would be a little sound coming from the live room into the mixing room, but it's safe to say that what they were hearing mostly was the mic'ed up cabs playing through the studio monitors.

Man that 6505+ rocks! It sounds so clean, but so capable with just the right amount of dirt, grit, and attack that you need. That's definitely my Amp of choice. I will concede that the Orange does sound good, but the PV just has that really special sound that I would be looking for when tracking, or when I sit down to do a mix. Would sound so lovely to track left and right with slightly different settings to get get nice stereo width. I reckon it's a sleeper.

The JCM2000 blew a fuse and very certainly at least one tube because it´s faulty. They have a problem with the PCB that develops after some years, you can put in new tubes and the BIAS will just run away to the stars. Marshall adressed that problem some years ago, they provide new PCBs that wont fail anymore for like 300$ (at least i paid 230€ here, but in the US with shipping and tax it will be a bit more i guess). Otherwise: Great clip, as usual!! Thanks for everything you do here, its awesome! I learn a lot from every single video you put on here

I had a JCM800 back in the day. Really loved the tone. One trick pony though. I’ve never been into boosting the front end of the amps. And I did for the JCM800. I don’t put anything in front of the EVH red channel and it rips. Blue channels is great for most rock.
@RB747domme
@RB747domme 4 жыл бұрын
Ceci Shaw yeah the JCM800 always had that sweet spot tone. Especially when recording. I have a JCM900 anniversary, with me updated electronics, but original tube design and circuitry - it's a killer amp, which I use a lot when recording. He's got that really heavy bottom end crunch, and upper mid and top end tone) especially with with the the 2x12 cab (less harmonic distortion than the 4x12 when mic'ing). Although, there is one caveat I will make to that. If I want to record some room I will use a 4 x 12 cab for energy, and double track some extra channels, and place three or 4 mics across the room to get some ambien tone and pan it left and right as it introduces some lovely extra harmonics with the four speakers working in tandem. So I close mic the 2 by 12 cab and record that first panned slightly off centre, and then use the 4x12 to record some ambient tone double tracked left and right which sounds like a sort of panned reverb when placed in the mix correctly. I love the JCM for that sweet tone. But you are absolutely right, it tends to be a bit of a one trick pony. I like the EVH, and I should use it more really, but haven't had the opportunity lately, however the next time I do, I will explore it some more in-depth when recording. Happy playing! (Just out of interest, I just thought I'd add that that I use the EVH playing bass which is fun and sounds surprisingly amazing)

I'm the same age as Rick and watched the digital revolution unfold starting with the 'Rockman'. For a long time, the modelling didn't cut it for me but that threshold has now been crossed. The real advantage of high gain amps is the volume and sound pressure(the best part), rolling off volume to clean up, and cutting through in live settings. Having said that digital modelling can now produce some fucking awesome guitar sound and you can have the best of both worlds. I still like a good guitar amp and speaker cab to drive the digital. :)

I don't know all the tech jargon like you all do. Been playing 40+ years and I've always just picked the amp I think sounds best for what I can afford. Anyway, about 7 years ago, I was in the market for a new amp. I was looking at a Line 6 modeling amp and I wasn't very impressed. The guy at the store says "you should check out this Vox Valvetronix amp. It's cheaper and it uses a tube." So I did and I loved it. Would I like an EVH, etc? Yes, but for whatever it's worth, I think my Vox AD100VT sounds about as good as you're going to get for what I paid for it. I know a lot of people don't like the modeling amps and some of them sound pretty bad, but I don't see the issue when it's a good one.

Hey Rick. I'm a big fan of your channel. A long time subscriber. I'm not a musician but love watching your videos. I've always been a fan of hard rock and heavy metal. I'm 54 BTW. I love how the guitar in these genres have a sinister sound to them. Is this intentional? Or just the natural sound playing these chords make. I love the primal feelings I get from listening. Keep up the good work.

I own some Marshalls and a 5150 mk111 but over the last 6 months I've been using a Helix stomp live straight into the P.A and it sounds and feels fantastic. I get comments on the tone ( not my playing lol) all the time from people that know tone and they are all blown away with the HX stomp. I honestly think all the top shelf modeling gear sounds great these days, absolutely no need to lug big heavy amps around anymore AND fantastic in the studio.. Lovin tech for the modern guitar player today, soooo cool..:)

Even wearing headphones, its hard to say without being in the room. I wanted to hear the Marshall compared to the Peavey. Back in '89, I was playing metal with a Laney head, which I thought was good until my partner got a Marshall superlead. Next to the Marshall, the Laney was lame. I got a JCM800, and I had a slight edge. He showed up with a RealTube 12ax7 pedal to run into his Superlead, and I had to get one too. Good balance. The EMG81 active pickups came out, and we both got those. At this point, it was crunch city, and any other amp that came into the room was instantly shamed. No one we knew had a Mesa, and at that time there wasn't anything else except for custom modded Marshalls only owned by the pro's. Since then, amps have come and gone, but basic tubes are still the same. Amp tone is always intriguing, and you never really know what you've got until you're comparing side by side. Let's hear them all.

Im a helix player and i love my Helix , but also just purchased a ENGL Fireball 25 and love the raw amp sound , i had forgot after a couple years of primarily using helix what a true high gain amp in the room is like , so the recreation on modelers is great but still not moving air like a raw amp , and there is some great advantages to modelers , so i think its basically the best of both worlds , both ways are enjoyable and modelers do a great job at recreating tone

Great video, Rick. Although there is certainly a difference in the sound of each amp - loved the Recto the most, but I've always been a Mesa fan - I would love to hear a comparison of these high gain monsters matched with their respective cabs. Do you think there would be a bigger difference that way or would it be a waste of time? Cheers from Canada!

Here's what I would've wanted to see on the video, besides the same eq, cab and mic: - a comparison with the amps and their respective cabs - a modeler counterpart on the "one cab for all" setup and on "to each amp it's own cab " setup, going through the exact same recording setting. Other than that, great video Rick.

I think my favorite for high gain was the Dual Rectifier. It had the best blend of punch, sizzle, and power, but also it was tight enough to keep everything in check. The EVH had too much sizzle, the Peavey was tight, and the Orange had a great mix of the EVH and Peavey sound.

Thanks for letting us hear how these amps sound in a great recording environment! I´m on Kemper just bc I could not afford all the original amps (I still own a Friedman Small Box, though) and bc I do not have the recording space to set up these amps. No one can tell the difference when you hear a song properly mixed. And even A/B comparissons make it hard to tell what´s the real amp.
