Friend, it's not a bengali song. It is entirely a hindi song, with one bengali line added to it. Story is bengali based. The music is bengali based. But adding one bengali line in one entirely hindi song does not make it a bengali song.

India has many states as the comment states above. It has diversity. And those many states together helped us. Not only you West Bengalis. But this is about 1952 when urdu was almost forced upon on the now Bangladeshi citizens( Both hindus and muslims. ) West Bengalis never faced the force of urdu. They were never forbidden from listening to Rabindra sangeet or attending Bangla noboborsho like we were. You guys had your culture protected. I am American and I heard this song as a background to a dance video and had to find out where I could hear it again! I don't understand the lyrics, but the music is so moving, as well as listening to the language, so soothing but at the same time feel like it's telling a story.... lovely! I am going to try and watch the movie now, too.

This is a Hindi song but with few Bengali words and music. The line "Disha hara Mon ta re, prank pakhi mor udiya jaye khancha bhenge" it means how lost and free my heart is after falling in love just like a bird is free from a Cage.
