Kids can’t fully appreciate the implications of having a public persona, or consent to having their image used publicly. Of course a brief clip of some kids in a video like this is not on the level of child star or mommy blog or whatever, but keeping their backs to the camera protects the kids from any weird shit. Justin and Sydnee talk about their kids, they’ve been briefly featured on Sawbones and MBMBAM in the past, but visual representation is another matter.

@sethescope
@sethescope 2 жыл бұрын
@@lighinz137 thank you for reminding me!! I've been dealing with migraines lately and they scramble my brain. or I'm just old now. either one. okay, so we're all familiar with the idea that content creators try to be relatable to their viewers/potential viewers. connecting with your audience is part of making art. we like art -- music, movies, visual art, etc -- because we connect with it on some level. there's nothing inherently wrong with that. an artist trying to connect to their audience is not a bad thing. that's the whole point of art lol but then there are people who try to be relatable, in the "how do you do fellow kids" sense. brands do this a lot, but a lot of youtubers, as an example, do too. it's forced. it's a ploy to get views or to sell something. it's performative. the most egregious examples of this, in my opinion, happen when the creator is trying to capitalize on how younger (35 and under) people are more willing to talk about how they're struggling -- it's not always genuine, and it's not always an attempt to reach out to others and feel less alone, sometimes it's a pissing contest "let me prove how much better I am by telling you I have it so much worse." it annoys the fuck out of me when creators are performative about stuff like this. when they lean so hard into how rough things are. now, I understand I'm not being very articulate here. I don't have the spoons to fully describe what I'm talking about, but I'll do my best. when I'm talking about creators being performative, I am NOT talking about people who are genuinely sharing their struggles. I'm not talking about people who talk about the specific ways the world is shitty. let me give an example of what I'm talking about. this same principle applies to individuals as well as brands, but brands are an easy example, and Justin has pointed out a LOT of these on munch squad lol. during 2020, brands were pumping out ads that all started like "it's 2020 and things are rough right now." of course that was true (and shit is still just as rough but in a different way now, let's be honest). but these ads were to sell products; these ads weren't made to let people know they weren't alone in their struggles. the people making these ads wanted to make money and were using the shitty situation to their advantage, and anyone with half a brain can see through their shit. that's the kind of stuff I'm talking about. to me, that kind of performative bullshit in service of capitalism is everywhere. I don't trust corporations or people when they make such bald-faced appeals to their audience because I don't appreciate it when other people try to make money off of how shitty I feel. I don't appreciate corporations co-opting the language of self care, as another example, to sell their shitty scented candles. Goop does this all the time to push her snake oil. and then, there are the McElroys (all McElroy family members can be included here but I'll just talk about the boys because they're the most visible). I'm a relatively new fan, tbh, I started listening to TAZ in 2018, and it took a while to expand even to mbmbam. but I have always been so fucking impressed by how....... genuine they are. it feels like a cringey thing to say, that a set of creators are genuine because so often, as I've described, human emotion and even the human experience in general is co-opted for capitalist ends. not always in an evil way because I mean, we all got bills to pay so I'm not about to begrudge some individual for doing what they gotta do to survive. but that's what I'm used to - people using pain to sell something. but the boys aren't like that. to me, they have accomplished something very rare - they are artists who make a living with their art but they have never lost sight of themselves. they have not turned themselves into a brand. they're just the McElroys, not The McElroys™️™️™️™️™️™️. so they're open about themselves. I think all three boys have talked openly about taking meds for mental health and how they go to therapy. Sydnee and Justin did a whole sawbones episode about their mental health struggles. it's real, it's not a gimmick, it's not performative. it's just their reality. so when they make content that's chaotic and has that "we are hanging on by a thread" energy, yes it's meant to be funny, but it's not making a parody of having a rough time and it's not some feigned act to get a wider audience. this explains, in my opinion, why they have such appeal to queer people, and I say this as a queer trans man. existing as myself requires a lot of conviction and commitment. existing as myself requires me to trust myself and my understanding of who I am above everything else. I have to trust myself more than I trust how I was raised to understand the world and my place in it. I have to trust my understanding of my body above everyone else's interpretation of it. that's not easy. it requires being honest, deeply and truly and painfully honest. so I don't have the time or energy or patience for frauds or for lying, whether it's from myself or from the media I consume. I'm drawn to honesty. I'm drawn to people who are looking for truth the same way I am, and that often includes other queer people but doesn't always. I'm drawn to the mcelroys because I recognize honesty and conviction when I see it. I think other queer people do the same. the mcelroys demonstrate this honesty through the way they respond to feedback and how they approach the experiences of people who are different than them. Lup is an iconic trans woman written by a cis man because that cis man knows he doesn't understand what Lup's life would be like and he didn't try to say that he did. he just made her a trans woman and made her amazing. he didn't do it for the novelty of having a trans character. he didn't do it for points. it wasn't performative. it was an artistic choice born out of a desire to create a world that included everyone, not just people like him. maybe this doesn't make a ton of sense. it's late and it's been a weird day. but hopefully I've been able to sort of communicate my thoughts on why the mcelroys can bring this energy, make it funny, and not just seem fake about it.
@sethescope
@sethescope 2 жыл бұрын
also! the honesty and genuineness is why this community is so special. if you look at the comments of any McElroy video, they're so fucking wholesome!! go into almost any fan space for TAZ or whatever and you'll find such kind and creative and lovely people. that's not an accident. that doesn't just happen. kind and creative and lovely people come together in such numbers because our common interest is kind and creative and lovely. this community is special because we are all here for essentially the same reasons. we're all drawn to the mcelroys because we value honesty and kindness and humor that isn't cruel. we want goofs that only hurt people who do harm (like Ted Cruz who, as we all know, pees his pants because he likes the warm feeling). we want fantasy that includes all kinds of people. we want fantasy with happy endings because we all are looking for happiness and goodness and love and a sense of belonging. and we're all here because of the McElroys and because they are themselves, they're people just like us who are doing their best and always trying to be better. that's why the mcelroys are so popular and why it works when they bring unhinged and chaotic energy. it's real. like the rest of us, they are literally hanging on by a thread lmao

Like that feeling of being a kid again and being so recklessly happy in a moment where literally nothing is happening but you're just happy to be a live and its overwhelming and you kind of want to cry even though you're still happy? IDK if that makes sense, but here we are. Perfect song for the perfect podcast, knocked it out of the park, wow.
