There were books written about Jesus that were not put in the new testament. So you can say there are different accounts from different people. The new testament wasn't written by Jesus. If that was the case, then there would be a good argument that Jesus didn't exist. I don't believen Jesus as son of god or messiah, but I recognize there's a historical Jesus. Bart Erhman is an agnostic biblical scholar and professor of religious studies at UNC. He has video lectures and books on why he feels there is a historical Jesus based on his research. With that said, he's an agnostic, so he doesn't believe in the divinity of Jesus. If you ever wanted to argue historical facts on why there is a historical Jesus, that existed 2000 years ago. I would highly recommend his work.
