Are you wondering what Montana winters are like? Montana winters are a little different around the state. Some parts of Montana get tons of snow and other areas of Montana get bitter cold temps. In this video, we will talk about how to handle Montana winters and give some tips to make it through the winter. Four-wheel drive vehicles and studded snow tires are the key to getting around in a Montana winter.

I never would have believed it if I hadn't experienced it: The fact that "it's a dry cold" makes a huge difference! (Mountains southwest of Missoula) It seldom gets you cold to the bone like some places I've lived.

Montana is like Alberta. If you want to see what the weather is like, wait 5 minutes. You get chinooks too, like places like Calgary and Lethbridge do. You also get bitterly cold, like other parts of Alberta and Saskatchewan do. Thanks so much for sharing this. Cheers!

One thing different about Western states and Dakotas I noticed is that roads are not salted like they are here in the Northeast. The towns do a good job in salting but the highways can be solid black ice so you need studded tires for sure. You won't be able to go more then 20mph on black ice on I-90. The wind can be extreme in the open country and solid ice, be careful if you plan to visit or roadtrip in the winter.

Thank you for an informative video. The western mountains are like the areas of Upstate, NY that are east of Lank Ontario. Places like Lorraine, NY can get about 300 to 400 inches a snow a season. The only difference is that Upstate NY gets very cold and it can last for days. However, just like Montana the winters the past few years have been, late, mild, and with less snow. I blame it on naturally occurring weather cycles of warmer and colder weather. After all, change had to occur to start and end ice ages. As is the common phrase used these days...we'll circle back on that! For anyone questioning weather cycles.

Yes, thank you for some balance. I cringe every time someone blames these weather shifts on climate change. Climate change is such an Orwellian term. Of course the climate changes, always has, always will. Our planet is a breathing organism, it has to in order to sustain life. Supposedly we are now affecting the weather, simply by living. We affect the environment, and we need to minimize damages and care about that, but environmental damage is reversible.

Mild? I live in Rochester NY, it has NOT been mild. We consistenly have below zero temps, especially in Jan and Feb. I remember much milder winters growing up here in the 80s and 90s in comparison to the past several years. It's MUCH worse now, in fact I am moving to southern CA next year because I'm done with the miserable cold and gloomy climate here!

We are currently in a record warm winter. This could change as it's only February. Studs are also not needed but can help. Most people I know don't use them. I've lived in the Bigfork area for over 22 years and winter weather here in Northwest Montana used to be much colder with heavier snowfall. Flathead lake used to freeze over every few years in the 80s.

@Sam Baer I wondered about saying studs and chains are needed for Montana winters. I've never used them in Ontario. I only got winter tires a few years ago. I'd used all seasons until then. Winter tires are a nice upgrade though, have to admit I feel much more sure footed. I wonder if the 4 wheel drive is necessary too, or just what people do there? Most don't bother w/ 4 wheel drive here either, unless they have a pickup, as the light butt end does get swishy if you don't have it. My ex used to pile wood in his to keep the rear from being too light, but a car was still more sure footed.

I just got back from Montana and South Dakota, planned to make it to the Western part but roads were too treacherous. Got as far as Billlings and turned back to Rapid City. Driving cross Highway 212 from Spearfish to Billings was quite the experience and not recommended. The eastern half of the state is barren, windy, and extremely cold. Roads are very treacherous in the winter from what I experienced and no salt is used.

I most of my life in Montana and experienced those winters until I was so sick of shoveling snow I moved to Washington state. Now I live on the west coast of Washington and honestly, the winters here are no picnic. We don't get snow, usually. Thank goodness. But if you want to talk wind and rain, that's a whole other ball game. We just had storm number 3 go through with 65 to 80 mph winds. The rains were constant, but it didn't have much effect here because it mostly rains sideways, due to the high winds. The surf (during King Tides) were at 35 feet and power was out due to trees and tree limbs blowing down everywhere. So no matter where you go, winter pretty much sucks!!!

As I gotten older, I wised up, these days I ask about the windchill and humidity, I can deal with cold, just layer up, there’s very little you can do about humidity As a side note, I used to drive Uber before, had a guy from Colorado that lived there all his life, he told me before they used to get plenty of snow for skiing in November and December, but since El Niño and global warming, he said around the turn of the century, snow has been showing up later and later every year, he told me these days, Colorado doesn’t get enough snow for skiing until sometime in January, and if someone wants to ensure skiing conditions, they better go in February or later, I been watching Chicago, I think that it’s slowly happening here too, I wouldn’t be surprised if Montana followed suit

You don’t need four wheel drive and studded snow tires to drive on most of those roads. I grew up in those winters driving my 1972 Pontiac Grand Prix and never needed it. When I lived in Alaska I drove up the mountains to ski resorts every week in my 1977 2 seater Datsun 280Z. Super light weight and just a few inches off the ground and had no problem getting up and down the mountains.

He wants to sell places in Montana, not chase them away, lol. Btw, -69 is insane. The weather there is pretty similar to Ontario, but we have milder places in Ontario I think. The lowest I personally remember was around -50. It was in Ottawa and it was colder than Moscow that year. Somewhere around 30 years ago. I keep forgetting, we're in Celcius, so our -50C is your -60F. Pretty similar. Ottawa is far south in Ontario, so I am curious what our low has been, Northern Ontario is cray-cray.
