It’s 2020 Memorial weekend, I just wanted to say thank you to the first responders. I can never forget all that you have done. RIP to the victims of that day. Finally to all that gave their lives to our Country.

no wonder people in Montecito wanted to get away from Montecito - it must have been terrifying. I would not want to live there. This could happen again. I am amazed more people did perish in this mud slide. Shocking.

i wonder if a massive community effort at constructing Berm-and-Swale-on-Contour excavations in the upper reaches of the hills would possibly mitigate (at least) the disastrous mudslides. During the WPA era (Depression Works Progress Administration) these excavations in Arizona ( think,) were built and to this day, they are still functioning as intended.

My condolences to the victims, but I'm sorry, if I lived in an area subject to mudslides and debris flows, I'd be alert. My street is on a hill and we aren't prone to flooding or slides like this, but if you told me that there was a big flood outside or mud started coming into my house, within 30 seconds I'd be ready to go up into the attic. We live in a single story house, too. I know exactly where the two-step ladder is and could reach it within to seconds and unfold it. I know where the key to the attic door is and could have that unlocked and have my family up in the attic within a minute of knowing of a situation like this; complete with flashlight and cell phone to call for help once up there. The lady grabs her baby and climbs on top of a BED? Get the freak out of here. Come on lady, where are your motherly survival instincts? You have an attic. Let the stairs down and take a few seconds to climb up. Now you're higher. But people don't think ahead of time for situations like this and I don't know why. Being "stunned" is not something you need to do in an emergency when you need to move NOW. You don't give yourself time to be afraid when you want to live.

@@umlax45 Or as someone who would survive using the brains given to them vs someone who won't think and is only focused on short-term for everything. Actions and lack thereof have consequences. Are you actually taking up for people that are too stupid to get to safety and think properly to be able to do so? People should be even more alert if they live in an area prone to debris flows or flooding, just like people who live in areas of high tornado activity have tornado shelters. Why do they have them? Common sense. They hear the sirens or see the alerts and go to the shelter. So why the freak would they not get to shelter in a debris flow? Makes no sense at all. The same thing applies to people who "freeze up" when someone breaks into their house. They have a gun in their hand and there is a violent person kicking their door in. They have the gun on the criminal who is clearly threatening their lives, but they don't pull the trigger and keep hesitating until the criminal comes over and knocks them out, taking their gun. When your life is on the line, there's no time to freeze up or get emotional. That applies to every woman, man and child old enough to have accountability. Anyone failing to react and hesitating deserves their fate, unfortunately.

@@margieo1507 Unfortunately, many of their mouths are shut. With mud that buried them because they failed to act. What should have been open were their brains to avoid danger in an area prone to such events. It's like being on a boat without a life jacket and another boater telling them to wear one and their boat capsizes without one on. They're not a keyboard warrior, they're a person with common sense telling a person without common sense what to do to save their life.
