As a Montenegrin 🇲🇪, I can safely say that our participation in WW2 is the most underrated one

From Montenegro 🇲🇪 I am so glad this is being talked about! In Montenegrin history WW2 is very little. I beg of you to talk about the Christmas Uprising (1919) in its own video which precedes WW2 when Montenegro fought a minor independence war again Serbia. You did a great job talking about it in this video but I think it deserves its own video.

It's like in the Japanese movie Rashomon. Many opposing sides forced to be in the same state.

We Montenegrins are Serbs. The only legal army at the beginning of World War II was the Yugoslav army.Partisans, Ustaše, VMRO were terrorist organizations. Allegedly, the partisans were anti-fascists, at the beginning of the war they first killed 2 Yugoslav gendarmes.And we can also talk about the Christmas uprising, after the assembly in Podgorica where there were two groups Green and White movement. The greens were for unification, but as a federal with autonomy, and the whites were for unconditional unification. They were all Serbs, but with different views on unification.Italy and the exiled government financed the insurgents who were not called "Committees" because the Committees were insurgents against the occupiers of 1914-18. And these were popularly known as "одметници ".

Montenegro had unilaterally voted to become part of Serbia in 1918. Great people's Podgorica assembly part of which was my great, great grandfather Pop Bozo Vujošević, a pre war memeber of Montenegrin Parliament. Split between the greens and whites happened as election for the assembly were held with greens not making good enough results, their name derived from the green paper their candidate list was printed on, while the whites had as the name suggests white paper. Whites were mostly represented by pre war Montenegrin opposition to King Nikola. But there were none opposing the unification, the idea of the greens was preserving Montenegrin uniqueness in terms of it's contribution in the struggle over the centuries for freedom, and they didn't cherish some notion of being against Serbs, as well as quite a few of the organizers openly considered themselves as such. Overall the greens were federalists, greens of the Christmas uprising were not lead by same ideas as the greens during WWII. Partizan left errors happened before the chetnik partizan split in Montenegro which happened substantially after the same split in Serbia and other parts. "Wherever I went, spies and hookers had to be paid in gold; only on Cetinje I got both for free" ( Quote attributed to Pirzio Biroli, military governor of Montenegro; in fact, the author was probably some Montenegrin who was not too fond of the inhabitants of the traditional capital, who consider(ed) themselves a cut above the rest of their countrymen) On a more serious note, Montenegro was the scene of some of the most dramatic fighting in Yugoslavia, as the German XXI Mountain Corps (ca. 50,000 men) became virtually cut off from the rest of the Army Group E in late 1944. It was the only campaign on the mainland in which British Army took active part (search for "Floydforce" or "Floyd Force"). It would easily deserve a full episode.

How large was the "Zelenaški pokret / Green" (Green movement ) tells you the fact that you can't find a single photo of that military unit, nor how their uniform looked like, not on the internet at least. I visited Historical Archive at Cetinje and I found few photos. All I can tell you that they had either civilian clothes with traditional Montenegrin cap/hat, or old Yugoslav Royal Army uniform, with wearing around the arm Montenegrin tricolor (red, blue, white) flag. The majority of that movement was based at Cetinje and the area in which they operated was Cetinje itself and villages around it. Sadly, in Yugoslav after WW2 history books and archives there are not many information nor talk about them, because in fact they weren't neither big neither strong neither important enemy to the Partisans. Also, they are the only military formation in Yugoslavia that haven't committed a single war crime throughout the whole war.

A really complicated region. I hope the US doesn't get involved in any of the regional conflicts that affected the old Yugoslavia in the 1990's. Really too complicated for the current crop of US State Department employees to grasp, especially ones from Ivy League Schools.

its great to hear about little known conflicts within ww2 - in little known countries... after the Hapsburg empire went belly up, creating Yugoslavia must have sounded a great idea .... but it was a hot mess!!! it looks like every ethnic group hated the others! ... it if weren't for Tito it would have all fragmented after ww2 ended.

There were not chetniks in July 1941 uprising. While some future Chetniks did take part in July Uprising, the uprising was organised and led by Partisans. Chetnik units Lašić and Đurišić were formed at the end of 1941, and this was one of causes for Leftist errors (partisans feared Montenegrin chetniks would turn againt them, as they did in Serbia or Croatia)

Montnegro made the first army uprising in nazi ocupaied Europ in 1941, radio Moscow talked about how ,,Montenegrins didnt sureender" all Montnegrin peopel were in the partisans and were serbs were with the nazzis and italians, partisans librated Montnegro in 1944 ....

Difference between Chetniks an Partisans was that Draza was Serb and Tito was Croat but soldiers were mostly Serbs. When enemies started to kill 100 Serbs for one German(Italian) Draza tried to save people but Tito didn't care. More civilians dead signifies more people that want to fight in his ranks. In the World war I, Tito fought against Serbs so I don't think he care much about them. Family Petrovic-Njegos were serbian royal family . You can learn about it from many documents and Petar II Petrovic Njegos writings. Montenegro always was "Serbian Sparta".

Well, there were no division to Chetniks and Partizans until the beginning of 1942. Anyway Chetniks most of the time were acting like collaborators.

The people of Montenegro were tied to Russia in any way, so communist and royall Russia remained their only memory of Russia, the literate went to the Chetniks(white Montenegro) and Zelenasi(Green Montenegro)and a very small part of Zelenasi was with the Italians, so there was a war on 3 sides and 3 groups later becomes 4 groups,1st part Green and Fashists against White, 2nd part was fascists,green against communists and white, 3rd part Royallists (white and green) against communists and Italians which were faschists but becomes communists. Communuist Montenegro 40% ; Chetnik Royallists white Montenegro 40% ;Green Montenegro Royallists 15%,Albanians 5% and Italian fascists (unknown). Hint: Fashits(Italians) they were so confused,soo much weak in the fight that they daily surrendered, their entanglement between the Montenegrin warring people destroyed them so psychologically that they hid in houses and thus helped Montenegrin civilians with their livestock. That's why they got the name KokoŠari. Its sad story becouse united Montenegrins are a very powerful and strong nation, they managed to defend themselves against the Turks many times and inflict a great defeat on them in numerous battles, as well as against Germany in the First World War. I don't think the Italians knew where they were going, they knew they were entering a country where there was a civil war and they thought it would be easier to fight. but the only thing that surprised them was that the green Montenegrins are the biggest spies and sycophants. There were war crimes on all three sides, but i dont think Italians did any crime, never heard of it. So my advice to politicians from Europe, Russia and America who want war in the Balkans is to think 3 times.
