Children aged from two-and-half to nearly six years prepare lunch for their Montessori community in New Zealand. Slicing fruit, grating cheese, making sandwiches, setting the table and cleaning up happens as part of the daily routine. The menu changes each day and includes pizza, rice and vegetables, fish pie and sandwiches over the week.
You will see children organising the classroom with very little intervention from the teachers ... and many examples of young children helping each other and collaborating to do tasks for the whole community.

It is a grace, they are saying thank-you for their food. This is at Wa Ora Montessori school which is a school which goes from 18 months to 18 years based in Wellington, New Zealand.

You mean it's a pray? And if it's New Zeland why do they do that in another language?

It is a thank-you. New Zealand is a bicultural nation - Maori and NZ European. The language used is the language of Maori,

Wow, just read the Maori article in Wikipedia, didn't know that before. So in fact kids know English and Maori? Nice! It sounds like Japanese to me.

English is still the dominant language in NZ. The Maori language nearly died out but over the last roughly 30 years there has been a drive to grow it again. Therefore, spoken in schools.

Margaret Homfray's who trained under Mdm MM said in her lectures that during meal times, children should be delegated duties and do work on communal basis, and never do their own things, including taking turn to set the table, distribute food for the others, clear the tables, clean the tables, do the dishes and so forth. It seems different Montessori do their own interpretation of MMs recommendation. One Montessori in Irvine, California that I had witnessed during lunch was orderly and students not only helped but take their turns with food, eat quietly, talk quietly and so forth. This Montessori is far too noisy.

There will never be a perfect Montessori environment. Plus, the teachers are free to handle things differently in THEIR OWN classrooms. I think that they're classroom is wonderful.

+NATASSHA HU There's actually been a study that said people who talk over dinner are happier in general and enjoy their food more.

They are children. Not "Montessori robots". Yes Montessori is supposed to be revolved around peace and quiet but not at all times, children are naturally social. Let them be.
