Fun fact: in the line "your mother was a hamster, and your father smelt of elderberries" the taunting Frenchman is alluding to the hamsters multiplying quickly, and the smell of fermented fruit, basically calling Arthur's mother a fornicator, and his father a drunk. In a very fancy way.

Don't forget that all those responsible for the credits had been sacked during the opening of the film. Thus, no end credits.

It's interesting to note that none of Arthur's men could have killed the historian, since the killer was riding the only real horse in the entire film.

As a medievalist, I ADORE this movie. And Terry Jones was actually a medievalist himself, to a degree: there's a lot of great research in this film, and its execution!

That ending...! I like to imagine theater audiences back when this first came out...sitting there in the dark thinking "is it over? Should we leave? There must be more, right?" all while that organ music keeps playing...

They only used 2 castles for the whole movie, they just shot scenes from different angles and redressed the sets to make them look different. The castle on the island actually still has someone living in it.

The same six guys, playing all of the main characters!!! Also in that ending, those people were a bunch of locals and they only had so many costumes, so most of those people are actually dressed in regular clothes, but they filmed it so you can't really tell. The Monty Python troupe did a few other films, _The Life of Brian_ is definitely another good one, it's loaded with political and religious satire as it follows a man named Brian who's often mistaken for Jesus. _The Meaning of Life_ was alright, it's more random sketches like their show _Monty Python's Flying Circus._ That, _Fawlty Towers,_ and _At Last the 1948 Show_ are three good shows if you want to see more of this humor from back in the 60's and 70's, or you can check out their compilation project _Monty Python Live at the Hollywood Bowl._

I love the unspoken detail that the way we know for a fact that the crew didn't kill the professor was the the guy who DID had a REAL horse XD In fact, a good chunk of the comedy for this movie came from how relatively low budget it all was: A)The coconuts emulating horse sounds and them acting as if they're riding them was them poking fun at the fact that they literally didn't have the budget for real horses B) The animator "having a heart attack" was ,again, them poking fun at the fact that they couldn't pay the animators to finish the monster battle C) The final battle getting interrupted was twofold: For one, its actually how many Monty Python skits would end, with the finale getting interrupted by the police taking them away or smth along those lines. Making the ending a literal cop-out. But it was also them getting away with the fact that they had run out of money to actually do a final battle for the Grail.

i know who the boss of this crowd is. its the queen! queen arthurette! i always liked how king arthur never ordered a retreat. he'd just yell - RUN AWAY! no cows, chickens, swallows, llamas or mooses were harmed in the making of this picture. but the whole cast wound up in the mental ward of their local animal rescue facility. did you notice how many of the parts were played by the same people? that's the "monty python" group. there's 5 english members and one american - terry gillium, who does the animation. he later became a well renowned directed of his own films. he also appeared in the tv show and the films. monty python began as a BBC tv show called "monty python's flying circus" who went into making films when the series was finally cancelled after 4 or 5 years. no, there is no member named 'monty python." they made 4 films altogether, this being their second. but they appeared seperatly in many films and tv shows. the show appeared in syndication in the u. s. and was a huge hit among the college crowd... and stoners.

The stomping foot 🦶 is from the animated intro of the TV series: Monty Python's Flying Circus. I was addicted to that before this movie was written. I'm really glad you 3 liked it so much. It began airing in the USA on PBS in the early 70's which is when I first discovered them as a kid. They were a six man team made up of five Brits and one American who did all of the animation but rarely appeared in skits. The woman who played Zuet in the 'Holy Grail' wasn't officially part of the troop but became a regular on the TV show and the TV show is also where the animated foot you mentioned was from. I highly recommend watching the show as well as their second movie 'The Life of Brian' which was released in 1979 and is hysterical.

P. S. By the way! About the credits! Despite the humor in them, that was it. Back then the majority of the credits were up front, to get them over with. Then at the the end, the actual words, "THE END", would appear and that was it. Except when the cast would be given a, "curtain call", as it were. "THE PLAYERS", followed by a list of the cast. Then at some point, they came up with credits at both ends of the movie. Then they put both styles at the end of the movie, usually for the, "Summer Blockbuster", movies. 🤓

When I saw this first run in the theater, the ending was so unexpected. And for a few seconds, everyone in the theater was completely quiet until we started realizing that was the end of the movie and there was a laugh here and a laugh there. And before long everyone in the theater was laughing so hard. I think that the audience in 1975 was so much different than the audience these days. And of course most of us who came to see this movie had been watching Monty Python on TV. So we expected something completely different. It was hilarious and we had such a good time and I will never forget it.

This took me a while to realize, but, the person who killed the professor guy is on horseback and our guys don't have horses, they're just pantomiming riding horses while some guys in the back makes hoofbeat noises with coconuts, so it's COULDN'T have been one of our guys. The true genius of Monty Python is their appeal across generations.

This film has so many jokes (including implied jokes) that it bears watching a number of times. Even after multiple viewings, there are gags I’d missed on previous viewings, that were revealed or emphasized by by more sharp-eyed observers than myself. Here are a few: - When Arthur battles the Black Knight, the purpose of the fight is about ‘cross(ing) this bridge’ …but it’s a tiny bridge over a tiny stream, that anyone could simply jump across without effort... - The Black Knight’s abilities mock standard ‘superhuman’ tropes in action movies: He throws his sword with inhuman accuracy, nailing his running opponent thru the man’s helmet eyeslot; He’s able and willing to keep fighting despite suffering one grievous injury after another; His limbs fall off too easily, after tiny light blows from Arthur, as though they were attached with Scotch Tape, when real human limbs have bone, muscles, tendons and are difficult to cut through… - The French Knight on the first castle wall we see him at, hears noises coming from the forest made by African jungle animals, even though no such animals would be in England... - The French Knight also hears the Trojan Rabbit being constructed with electric power tools, around 900 years before the first such tools were invented (unless you take the view that Arthur and his men were cosplaying all along, and were ‘really’ in the 20th century the whole time…) - The cartoon ‘Black Beast of Aaaargh!’ isn’t actually black... - G-d assigns the Quest to Arthur as a mission, without telling him why - another feature of many action films: Why embark on this Quest, to begin with?,,, - The signs along Sir Robin’s path point to ‘certain death’ in one direction. How often in action films to characters irresponsibly wander into dangerous situations which they could easily have avoided by taking another route?... - The King of Swamp Castle has the ability to cancel the film’s about-to-be-played music at will, calling out the contradictory nature of movie soundtracks: The characters in the film can’t (or shouldn’t be able to) hear the music, but we, the audience can... - More contradictions when the Famous Historian is killed: At his sudden murder, one would expect that there would be members of the film crew running to his assistance (Director, Boom Mike Operator, Production assistants, maybe the cameraman) …yet only his wife runs into the shot... I think one of my favorite details in this movie is that they have the coconuts to represent the horses and they point it out in hilarious fashion, but it was because of Budget that they did have horses except for that one moment at 11:35 where that mysterious Knight killed Frank on horseback, the only real horse in this film

My favorite part is that the cops are definitely arresting the wrong people. The killer of the historian was the only person in the show on an actual horse.

The Scottish heritage authorities wouldn't let them use state-owned castles for making a comedy, so they shot all the castle scenes (except the ending) at one privately owned castle, Doone Castle near Stirling. It is now a tourist destination. The castle gift shop sells coconut shells. The coconut thing was a virtue born out of necessity, as the film was produced on a shoestring budget and they couldn't afford actual horses.

Despite the low budget, they had access to a few nice locations Castle Stalker, Scotland was the Castle Arrrggghhhh on the lake Doune Castle, Stirling, Scotland was used for several shots. It's a good bet that the tourism visits to these sites got a boost from the movie.

He was a member of the, Tulsa chapter of the, "Tactical Simulation Society", and he was their, "D & D Dungeon Master". He showed me how this movie inspired so many creatures and characters featured in the reference books. The rabbit is called a, "Vorpal Bunny"! 🐰. That means that it specializes in decapitation attacks. Well, especially the, "Vorpal Blade", anyway. 🤓

The most expensive parts were probably the camera rental, the one scene with an actual horse, all the extra actresses in Castle Anthrax and the extras in the final charge. I think they had to rent the Castle Aaaargh! also. Funding by a couple British rock groups. The also did The Meaning Of Life and The Life Of Brian. There were some Pythoners involved in Brazil, The Zero Theorem, The Adventures Of Baron Von Munchausen, The Crimson Permanent Assurance and Yellow Beard. A couple newer movies with some of them are A Fish Called Wanda and Fierce Creatures, which also had Jamie Lee Curtis and Kevin Klein. There are more, but that's a start. One of the key features is their very tight dialog. They get a lot communicated in just a few words, which helps with comedic timing. Just go over some of the skits and see if you can trim any fat. It's really difficult.

I think part of what they were trying to get across, as a reaction against all the romantic "knight in shining armor who slays the dragon and rescues the fair maiden" was the brutal nature and overall ignorance of the era.

Everyone loves the black knight scene but my favourite one is they witch scene

Isn't that THE thing with _The Holy Grail?_ Nobody ever did find it Did it ever exist in the first place? and more cheesily... It's the quest that's important, NOT the final result. _If you can face victory and defeat_ _And treat those two impostors just the same_ . ..is how _Kipling_ expressed it. That's reflected in this movie. Everything's about enjoying the nonsense along the way. If you're sitting there just to see the Holy Grail at the end, then you'll be (as often in life) disappointed.

The funniest bit, the horseless horse-riding, was done impromptu. They couldn't afford horses, so just made it up.
