The Pythons always amaze me with their ability to transfer discussions of high culture and history into an environment in which no one would expect them to occur and coal miners arguing about the Treaty of Utrecht is somewhat brilliant; but no at least a bit sane person could have dreamed up such a jest.

FireEyedMaidOfWar, Like most satire, it has some basis in fact. Many colliers were formidably learned and dedicated to self-inprovement. Miners' Libraries throughout south and west Wales were very well stocked and well used. I have heard miners arguing about politics, philosophy and economics at a high level, though they didn't hit each other with shovels!

It's interesting to compare this with Peter Cook's 'Experiences Down the Mine'. And it reminded me of Richard Burton.

no but the lamp rims were. yellow for trainee, red for apprentice electrition, blue for apprentice fitter. A black rim means a qualified mimner. hope that helps. there was white also but cant remember what they used that colour for.

How on earth do you mistake an abacus for a metope?
@FireEyedMaidOfWar12 жыл бұрын
@TheKenfig: Nope, that’s the usual exponent of them. Especially as in England money buys everything right after the Civil War and the Glorious revolution, when the nobility did start merging with the rich merchants, who rose to absolute power from them ever since.

@TheKenfig: Sure but so is the entire political establishment and economic leaders of England and they tend to be even ignorant whether Winston Churchill or Adolf Hitler was the British prime minister during the Napoleonic Wars, to put it polite.

The first and second miner as well as the foreman are right, but also wrong! It was signed at first in March 1713, and resigned until September 1715! And how can anyone confuse the treaty of Westphalia, which was being drafted between 1646 to 1648! It's that third miner that don't know the difference between the battle of Borodino and a tiger's bum! At least the foreman knows were a metope and an abacus is.

@TheKenfig: Sure, but still he drove the English out of India with hunger strikes, peace prayers and tax boycotts and this disgraces not only the English but their enemies, too! Just think of the poor Irish, who had to struggle 700 years to free themselves or the Scots. Worst of all even we French have lost Glory, because until Gandhi came we could nettle the Indians by informing them that even French village girls can repulse the English armies, but know it their turn.
