Moog DFAM percussion synthesizer tutorial Lesson 17: Advanced External Sequencing

This is a tutorials series for anyone who wants to learn how to use the Moog DFAM to its fullest extent. The DFAM does drum sounds, bass sounds, percussion, and all kinds of other wild things. I've tried to break things down into small videos that are easy to mentally digest and apply to your own electronic music. We will be exploring both east coast tonal and west coast avant-garde uses of the synthesizer, as well as some techno specific applications.
This seventeenth video shows some different ways to integrate the DFAM into a larger eurorack setup, and how to use a sequencer to achieve different results. Please leave a comment with any questions or requests and a like if this was helpful.

This convinced me to finally pull the trigger and get one :-) I was a bit hesitant because of the 8 step only sequencer. I’m imagining you could even try and make your external seq be the foundation of the beat, in whatever chosen # and have the dfam seq be treated as a polymeter over that..? Maybe it’s usually going to just be more chaotic than I’m hoping here?

Another great video, well explained and easy to understand. I ran behringer 960 (system 55) sequencer through mine with odd clock timings from the third row and had very interesting results. Glad you're doing more vids on the Dfam 🙂 Hope to see more on the Lyra 8. Thanks Ethan 👍

thanks! Do you have the full system 55? I was debating it, but the demos don't sound that good from Behringer, and I'm wondering if that's because it doesn't sound good, or that whoever is making the demos doesn't know how to make it sound good.

@@EthanJamesMusic1 I have nearly all the Behringer system 55 modules but I couldn't tell you if they sound exactly like the original Moog system. They sound good to me though. Tim Shoebridge done some great Vids on them, worth checking out. I always wanted a System 55 and Behringer allows me to finally afford it.

Can you please make a video explaining how you can external clock the Soma Enner from DFAM or anything else? Apparently it can be done!

I'm not sure about the Enner. It can definitely be done with the Lyra-8. I'll make something for that.

no, it has its own internal 8 step sequencer. This video is just some ideas for combining external sequencers to get more steps and more variation.

@@EthanJamesMusic1 Forgive me for this next question I’m new to this, why do they sell modules without housing? Do they plug into other modules just like that, or am I expected to build a housing? I can’t find anything that basic of a tutorial

@@beatjuiceworldwide1560 no worries! Most modules come without housing, because you are expected to buy a case. The reason for this is that most people who get into Eurorack are wanting to build an entirely custom system. There are many types of cases. I would recommend that you buy a powered case as your first one, so you don't have to worry. Make Noise makes a good single row one. TipTop Audio make a rack mount one, if you have a spare rack case that you want to use. You can also buy nice custom wood ones on Reverb. I have a playlist on my channel called Eurorack A-Z that will probably help you a lot in terms of understanding how it all works. Let me know if you are having trouble finding it, and I will link it

*DFAM. It’s my first one, been tinkering for years on various DAWs and hardware, and I’m hooked. Gonna have to build a Euro Rack now. I’m getting the PO-12 Rhythm next.
