I’m not really worried. This particular design may be cute for you and me, but it’s still very different to a moomin’s. Moomins are round and soft, with no visible sharp features or striking colors. With that said, I get what you mean, as making him hideous to us as well is exactly what makes this scene so effective on the first place. I mentioned this in other comment replies, but I think this design has a lot to do with feelings of empathy towards Moomin when I saw this scene as a little child, feelings that probably leaked decades later, when I got the chance to reanimate it for this project. ​@@fennecsilvestre I understand your point but I think we'll have to agree to disagree, I always felt that this scene works because at first the family is shocked by the appearence of this ugly creature, not only the moomins but little My as well, and then they feel sort of outraged and insulted on top of that because this gross creature is claiming to be Moomin. This makes Mamas actions all the more impactful because her motherly love transcends all boundaries created by physical appearance. My point is that the very open minded moomin family wouldn't be so hostile to anyone just because they're unusual or diufferent looking than the moomins. Sniff is both those things and his appearance is never an issue. Again, I don't want to take away from the fact that you've made some stunningly beautiful art, this is a small nitpick, really.

@@Paolur You know, now that you bring that up, I actually agree with this line of thought but didn’t really consider it on my comment. Seen like that, then this has probably much more to do with those nostalgic feelings I mentioned, rather than a reinterpretation on the characters themselves. I tend to sweeten a lot of things in my art for some reason, maybe as a form of therapy or something. I still adore this scene as it is originally, and remember it fondly because it wasn’t just upsetting, but also heartwarming at the end. It still gets me to this day, which I’m sure it’s a sign of a well done scene.

@@fennecsilvestre It's definately one of the most touching scenes in a series filled with touching scenes and it established Moominmama as TV mom #1 in my opinion. It really was my fave show as a kid and one of my faves still, the Groke made me scared of the dark till I was twelve.

Aaah I’m very glad to hear you like my animations! Photoshop is probably not the most intuitive tool out there, but it’s the one I’ve been most comfortable with for years, even more than Clip studio at times. I’m a self taught artist, so everything has been based on observation and trying until now like the result. It’s taken years of practice and I still feel like a beginner sometimes...but! I think there are still some scenes left, but last time I checked it was just a few. I'd say the project is about a 97% done at this point. Hopefully we get to see it completed this year :)

That's a good point. This redesign may still be strange and maybe a little threatning with it's night creature look, thin claws and sharp teeth, but yes, definitely not unsettling. All you see here is mostly personal and is very influenced by a sense of affinity towards Moomin in this desperate situation. It's possible I may have wanted to communicate my own feelings of empathy and the best way I could show this to others is by making his design more appealing. It sounds kind of superficial when seen like that, but if these emotions are evoked from my childhood, and therefore, from the original design, maybe there's more going on here than just appearances.
