Side note: As you explained the moon is tidally locked to the earth, which not only means that the same side of the moon is always facing earth, but also that the earth viewed from the moon's surface is always in the same position in the sky, so you only get to see a rising earth if you're in orbit around the moon but not if you're on its surface.

Doesn't the moon wobble a bit so you can actually see earthrise in 7-degree ring around the edge?
@GeertDelmulle
@GeertDelmulle Жыл бұрын
If that is so, then why is the Moon not fixed in Earth’s sky? I would expect that property to be symmetrical as well…
@vaxjoaberg
@vaxjoaberg Жыл бұрын
@@GeertDelmulle That would only happen if the Earth rotated at the same rate that the moon orbits the Earth. So we can either speed up the Earth's rotation (which I would prefer we not do) or we slow down the moon's orbital period (which would, unfortunately, cause it to move much farther away).
@JerehmiaBoaz
@JerehmiaBoaz Жыл бұрын
@@sankang9425 The wobble is called libration but it's caused mostly by observing the moon from the earth and because the earth rotates around its axis you fists see more of one side of the moon and then more of the other (this is called diurnal libration). This effect isn't present on the moon's surface because the moon is tidally locked to earth. There is some physical libration that is detectable from the moon but it's tiny and very slow.

Admittedly of all the astronaut autographs you have the paper plate is probably the most aerodynamic.

I was so happy to hear Brady describe John Young with the phrase I always use about him: The astronaut's astronaut. Worked for Nasa until the last day of 2004 - 32 years after he walked on the moon - and then apparently kept his office and turned up to work unpaid for years after that.

This is greatness! I have a set of Apollo 11 photos from the original negatives. They were given to my Grandpa by a friend who worked at NASA in Houston.

John Young was the only Apollo Astronaut to have walked on the moon AND orbited the moon alone. Apollos 16 and 10. I love that fact about him. That's truly an impressive collection, Brady!

I got Jim Lovell's signature on a beat up old dorm poster of the "up goer five" when we happened to meet him at a restaurant. It's one of my most prized possessions.

Not just previous astronauts but ones currently in space! Stephen Bowen is the Commander of SpaceX Crew-6 which just arrived to the ISS 6 days before this video published, and Bob Cabana is currently the Associate Administrator of NASA.

It's great getting to see your enthusiasms Brady! :) Almost forgot to mention: I really appreciate the topic as I was able to watch the landing on our black and white tv, then run outside and look up at the moon.

It was through Objectivity that I first learned about Public Broadcasting Service and "The Race for Space," which renewed my interest in the Apollo program. It's nice to see the man behind it geek out for a bit.

*bit of a long term space geek here...my dad was on the prime launch crew at NASA during the Saturn V launches...i might have only been three years old at the time but i remember watching the launches on tv then running outside and seeing the rockets going up from the front lawn of our house in Coco Beach Florida...and then later staying up late to watch the Viking 2 Mars landing which was also very exciting...so yeah i can fully understand and appreciate your very valid obsession*

This brought back some happy memories of my late grandfather, who was an engineer at NASA from Gemini all the way through to the early days of the ISS. I got a bunch of cool Apollo and NASA things after he passed, like old patches from the missions he supported and an engineering manual for the Saturn V with schematics and such.

An absolutely excellent collection of memorabilia, Brady. My memorabilia is mostly limited to memories. I remember watching the TV coverage of the Apollo 17 crew bouncing around that huge boulder; but not from the angle Gene Cernan took that photo. I remember Dave Scott proving Galileo was right. And, I even remember watching Neil Armstrong climb down the ladder and take his famous first step (I was nine at the time).

I'm also a bit of a nerd for the Apollo missions, and am incredibly jealous of your collection. That's a lot of history in those photos. I know that there have been a lot of ISS astronauts that you might not be familiar with, but as a Canadian, I definitely think you should add Chris Hadfield to your collection. In the humble opinion of me and my fellow Canadians, not only is he one of the most well-known of the ISS astronauts, but he is definitely the coolest!!

Hey Brady you did an episode several years back on H. G. Well's trying to get into the Fellowship.
