This video shows the IFR procedures of flying in the U.K. The flight was to Wick EGPC , a classic ferry pilot airport to refuel before the flight over the pond.
ATC is recorded and additional information of the flight is provided by subtitles and photos.
The flight was conducted for A2B, a very professional and reputable ferry flight company.

Wonderful demo of the Mooney and non-US procedures, executed with your usual attentive precision. When I got my Com'l SEL, I did it in a Mooney and a Citabria - two airplanes that could not be more dissimilar in handling and capabilities. And coming from a C-172 pvt I learned that the Mooney does not like to slow down. To learn the Mooney, I took it up to 15,500 just to nibble at the upper envelope. Without speedbrakes and the need to keep from shock cooling engine, it took a full 35 mins to get back to sea level, flying in big circles near the Bay Area. Great plane, really enjoyed flying it.

Guido Warnecke Well I worked as much as I could instructing over 14 years. Although I gained my ATPL, got to the point where I was forced into making a decision to either continue living on the breadline or pursue an alternative living. The problem was also partly my age, at the time late 30's during the UK recession of the late 80's, then a couple of big UK airlines went bust which flooded the job market with highly experienced pilots. Undetered I continued until around 2003 but there were some terrible things going on in the world then and the airlines stopped recruiting. I have many many happy memories and now I still get into the air flying a paraglider. Clearly not the same but at least I still fly and I love it. Kindest regards, Paul.

Answer to Russell Senior re vernier throttle (KZfaq does not allow to rely directly). It is like a mixture control. Fine tuning via turning and larger adjustments by pushing a nob on the top of the throttle lever. I think I show this on the video at 2:25 kzfaq.info/get/bejne/os1dZ7eTtJ6lYY0.htmlm25s Engine: you treat an engine well and the engine is gonna treat you well. On long overwater flights single engine this may pay off. Happy Landings, Guido

At Frank Pannier: at 5000ft (high power to brake in engine) 148 KTAS at 16 GPH, leaned to 100F rich of peak. 10,00ft 13 GPH and 142 KTAS. 15,000ft 11.5 GPH at 139 KTAS 17,000ft 10.3 GPH at 135 KTAS. Temperature was -25C. Amazing how well the aircraft performs up high. All other fuel flow leaned to 50F rich of peak. happy landings, Guido

+Guido Warnecke Did you have ferry tanks? Were you heavy? I fly an Ovation and I would expect 180 KTAS at 17 GPH at 5000 feet and 100ºF ROP. I normally fly 25ºF LOP that low though, and on a hair over 12 GPH I would get about 165 KTAS at 3000, 170 KTAS at 6000, and 175 KTAS at 9000. :) My favorite leg ever: 13,000 feet, 172 KTAS on 10.1 GPH at peak. And that was at max gross weight at takeoff! Love the Ovation, wish I had the G1000 and deice that another pilot at my home airport has!

Hi Kent, the Ovation is by all means a great aircraft. No ferry tanks, if I remember correctly 109 gallon tanks. Flies forever. I reached destination even on the 700NM legs with more than 2 hours fuel on board. Happy Landings, Guido

Glad you're back with these awesome videos! Love the inserted graphics and closeups. Question: When using the auto-pilot is there a concern that when you key the mic on the yoke you could accidentally disconnect a portion of the AP? I remember a "Mayday" episode where the AP disconnected the altitude control (only) after the pilot nudged the yoke and the noise in the cabin prevented him from hearing the "ding" that announced it.

Do you ever consider holding off on gear retraction until all usable runway is behind you?

This is debatable. The aircraft accelerates very quickly and it is difficult to judge, when all "usable" runway is behind. In a way you have to trust the engine, otherwise one should never fly over the North Atlantic in a single engine. Happy Landings, Guido
