The shuttle was a beast compared to prior spacecraft. Damn thing was a true blue glider before it was the shuttle. They basically strapped some rockets on the damn thing and said space plane. Obviously a lot more went into it but the point is it was designed to survive the stress of terrestrial flight at enormous speed and the force of landing a heavy vehicle at high speed this the need for the world's longest airstrip.

YeahI don't get why they don't create a new fictional shuttle if they really want it to be a shuttle and not a modern day capsule. Base it on the x-37b upscaled with windows and a cargo bay, job done.

Like the old Colliers rocket and space station designs, the shuttle will be used as the "generic" spaceship in movies until we have years of history with something else that has more range and variations of use. So...maybe...in 20 years we'll see SpaceX or something become the "generic" spaceship in movies - and people will gripe about how the design is old or that it can't do X,Y, or Z, or that in movies it spins and there's no effect inside the spacecraft.

@justaguy6100
@justaguy6100 2 жыл бұрын
@@themustardman219 Realism matters. I appreciate attempting to follow the laws of actual physics, and I'm not saying it's a bad movie, it's completely watchable. But unlike "Interstellar" the movie makers decided to ignore basic physics in favor of... well telling a story that doesn't exactly jive with what would really happen. Whether that makes it a better story or not, who knows, but for a LOT of people movies like this represent something that could really happen, and some of what he shows in the movie can't. Trust me I'll "talk shit" about a movie attempting to represent some aspect of reality and failing regardless of the particular aspect, unless it's an absurd comedy done well like "Mars Attacks."

I'd love to see a movie about the spaceship moon that wasn't about monsters or a disaster film. I want to see a mystery about the discovery of alien technologies kind of like an Indiana Jones movie but without the Nazis that wreak havoc and want to rule the world. It could be mysterious, suspenseful, full of wonder and excitement. If the moon were indeed hollow and was filled with corridors, winding passages, and vast areas then it may take a century to explore. All kinds of wild and imaginative 'things' could be inside...as in worlds within worlds...

Thanks for putting this up. I came across the movie on an HBO channel on Direct TV. The movie had already started 4 1/2 minutes ago. So I paused the movie and searched on You Tube to see if I could watch the beginning there... and viola... here it was. I watched this until the scene on my TV set was shown and then finished the movie there. Didn't miss a scene. BTW: I live out in the country where internet is expensive. So I can't hook up my TV and begin movies at the beginning all the time. Nor can I go online and watch movies whenever I want. I have to watch them on satellite TV.

I like good sci-fi movies and I am always hopeful that new ones will be good so I hope this is good. Now my criticism, does Hollywood know we haven't used the space shuttle for the past 10 years?
@SilntObsvr
@SilntObsvr 2 жыл бұрын
I guarantee that if you like good science fiction... ...you should avoid this movie. For a start -- how long has the shuttle fleet been out of service (hint: last launch 2011)? This is a "day after tomorrow" setting that's ten years out of date. Then the basic premise (the Moon falling into the Earth) is physically impossible; applying enough force to deorbit the Moon in less than several decades would shatter it, after which it would recoalesce by its own gravity -- it might *melt* from the energy input required, but it won't fall to Earth as any sort of solid body. I like good science fiction, and even bad science fiction -- but I won't see this until it streams for free.
@davidshoemaker4437
@davidshoemaker4437 2 жыл бұрын
@@SilntObsvr Yeah that is why I asked if Hollywood knew we haven't used a space shuttle for the past 10 years. It is easy to see that this will be more fiction than science. I just don't want to completely bash a movie without seeing it, and sometimes despite a silly concept, a movie can still be enjoyable. I do criticize more harshly if it is supposed to be science-based. I can live with the "Force" and Jedi powers in that particular setting but I have a harder time with a movie like Gravity not following the laws of gravity.

@nicolasmaldonado1428
@nicolasmaldonado1428 2 жыл бұрын
@@SilntObsvr it depends of what kind of force you apply. If a civilization is advanced enough to literally pull the moon out of the sky they may know how to do it without ripping it apart, for instance they could bend space fabric near the center of the moon just to the side where you want the moon to move and keep doing it until it gets momentum, like a fauxsingularity. But of course if you apply a single point force it's going to shatter it. I think it's more fun to come up with explanations on how it would be possible than why it wouldn't work.

Despite the bad reviews of this film, I actually quite liked it, especially the visuals and the fact they brought back the Endeavor space shuttle. But I also think this intro was kind of weird because Brian didn't really show too much emotion or emphasis to what was going on and it kind of felt bland, I don't really know how else to describe it, but the rest of the film was pretty decent to say the least I guess.

Further to my post below, the very first words we hear in the movie are "Hurry boy" as lyrics of the great song "Africa". These have already been said once before in the song and they relate to the need hurry towards salvation, in the wider context of needing to do what is right and curing what is deep inside, in the light of fear of what the person has become. That is a clear reference to the intolerable burden of sin provoking a desire to be Born Again. And since Africa is the homeland of all humanity, the suggestion is that all humanity might be in need of those rains which are blessed. The alternative to the rains is to miss them (and not receive them). This contrast between missing or blessing the rains is signalled in terms of significance by the character actually saying (as the first true dialogue in the movie): "What does it even mean?". He is Brian Harper meaning "the high or noble one who plays the harp", and he is put right by Jocinda Fowler. Jocinda means beautiful simpy, while Fowler is obviously a hunter who catches birds. Obviously the character has some African ancestry (though as we all do), but her name most likely incorporates "Lucinda" which means shedder of light - perfect for her activity here! Furthermore, Jocinda probably also references the hyacinth which denotes a gem (probably a sapphire). The astronaut who sadly dies is Alan Marcus - the handsome and fine one who is of Mars (good pilot-turned-astronaut name, I suppose). She then says that she has karaoked the song - where karaoke literally derives from "to put a playing orchestra into the empty void" - Yes, honestly!!! He missed her performance being "in the zone", and then the reference to her wedding then turns into chat about marriage - where these symbolise the bond between Jesus and His Disciples and then the Church as a whole. There is also a (quite witty) reference to honeymoon! This being a reference to the sweet first month of wedded bliss. When he joins in with the song "Africa", insisting on his version of the lyrics by which he "misses" the Holy Spirit, and her response to that is actually to say "Oh My God" (having first noted that she would prefer to be in space that in Italy - variously interpreted to mean land of the Bull, or fiery/smoking land (on account of the volcanoes). That immediately segues into Marcus saying "what the H*ll is that?" A sharp contrast between G(o)od and (D)evil that is right for our times. This is what happens at the beginning of the movie and there is no way to "miss" the spiritual significance of it. Given that the movie "Moonfall" followed on from "Don't look up" (whose true ending was a prayer to God followed by Leo saying "We really had it all, didn't we?" it would seem the Holy Spirit might have used both films to tell us something about ourselves, our situation in the universe and our way forward... In extremis, you might even interpret their working on Locker C2 as a reference to the Second Coming of Christ, though probably I am not going to go there!
