I used my Ludwig Accent kit with a 70s Zildjian 18" crash and 20" ride. Sure SM57 snare top and PG56 on the bottom with a PG52 on the kick, PG56 on toms and a Rode NT1a for an mono overhead. All tracked a Presonus StudioLive AR12 and mixed in logic. EQ, Compression, and reverb only (a touch of sub bass on the kick).

Definitely hear the diff.Just bought my 2nd kit.I had my first one in 1968 at age 7. They were Slingerlands.Bought a new Gretsch kit at age 60.There’s been so much innovation since the 60’s & 70’s.Looking forward to crawling behind a kit again……53 years later.Thanks for your video on showing how to mute.I plan on coming back for more help from you.

I have some high frequency hearing loss, but even I heard a great improvement. The moongel really tamed the snare!

Let them ring!!! When you play live, you'll get some natural compression from the overall volume of the band and many of those overtones will either disappear in the mix or be desirable. If you are recording, a dampened kit will disappear in the mix and sound flat when it is compressed by a post processor. If you are close-miking and recording, then you must have your top and bottom heads are in tune. When you're tuned, you will hear a nice consistent decay. To accomplish that, tune your bottom head first to a desired note, then tune your top head starting from low tension, increasing the tension until it starts to sound "flabby". At that point, your getting close, keep increasing tension until the flabby sound is gone and you will be left with a nice decay. If you go to tight the drum will ring it will ring. That's all there is too it. Now, getting the entire kit tuned is a bit more of a process because each drum may interact with other drums and cause overtones. That is something you can prevent too but it takes time, patience and experience. A well tuned kit will create very desirable over tones once you get each drum tuned to one of the following conditions: 1) the same note, an octave higher, small tom large tom 2) A full step above another drum 3) A half step above another drum. Do this, and like magic all ring will stop. This rule applies to all of the drums, snare, tom, floor tom, kick drum. Piece of cake.... lol............ stop dampening!!!

JohnBon Ham thanks for this. I know people preach about no dampening but they don’t really say the tips to start tuning and accomplish good sound without it. I’m still inexperienced with tuning so it’s kind of a crutch I want to get rid of.. I just never knew how

Great improvement to kill the overtones (parasite sounds) and get your own style of sound.

So which kind of heads would replicate the sound of these heads with a moongel on them?
@reyntime8735
@reyntime8735 4 жыл бұрын
Usually that’s impossible, but you can look online for damper heads and then put MoonGel on them for the ultimate damp
