This is one of my all time fav Bond movies ever. Partly because of nostalgia reasons (it was the first Bond I ever saw), but it also has all the things that makes for a great Bond movie - a sinister villain with a fabulous lair, tenacious henchmen, exotic locations, beautiful babes, and cool gadgets. Yes it's silly and camp, but arguably all of the Moore Bonds are silly and camp (the Connery Bonds on the other hand are silly and suave - minor change in flavor.) Just roll with it, laugh and have a good time. It's not Shakespeare, and it's not meant to be either.

Jaws was such a big hit with test audiences, he not only survived the ending to the previous movie, but came back for this one and got his own story arc and love interest. Richard Kiel is pretty cool if you see him in interviews, btw.

A note on the aerial cable car fight: Richard Kiel (Jaws)'s mother went to see the movie and told her son how scared she was during the fight sequence. Kiel told her, "Mom, we had rear projection and stunt doubles: I'm so afraid of heights, I don't even like being this tall." Hilarious, as is the character itself: Jaws == Wile E. Coyote Loved the Arthur C. Clarke reference! 7:34 "Does it [the centrifuge] throw him off his game, I wonder?" That'd be hilarious, if for the rest of the movie, whenever he walks, runs or drives, he's always veering slightly off to the left. 15:20 Cigarette product placement (Marlboro).

Gotta love the homage to Spielberg's Close Encounters (1977) when Bond enters the code to open the door @12:11. Spielberg is a huge Bond fan. His first experience watching Goldfinger in the cinema made a huge impact on him. Hence Spielberg's casting of Connery in _Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade_ and the Aston Martin DB5 from Goldfinger as well as the grey suit Connery wore in Goldfinger was also replicated and worn by Leo DiCaprio in Spielberg's _Catch Me if You Can (2002)._ Indiana Jones was always Spielberg's version of James Bond.

Originally, the next James Bond movie was going to be - For your Eyes Only (1981) after the Spy Who Loved Me (1977). But after the success of Star Wars (1977) & Close Encounters (77) they decided to do a space adventure movie - Moonnraker (1979). Or so I heard.
@davidanderson1639
@davidanderson1639 Жыл бұрын
That’s correct. Due to the hype created by Star Wars & other space themed films, the decision was made to make Moonraker rather than For Your Eyes Only. Sadly, this decision resulted in one of worst Bond films. To me, it’s poorly written & at times is swamped with product placement. Following The Spy of Loves Me, was going to be a hard act to follow….& Moonraker can’t quite capture what we’re used to with Bond films.

@@ConstantineFurman I was one of those people who liked it! It was awesome to see on the big screen. Pure escapism. And yes, the Star Wars / Close Encounters influence is very clear. Actually, I think the spacecraft models look better in Star Wars and Close Encounters. Although I enjoyed Moonraker, the space lair looks a bit cheap and cheesy (looking at the exterior shots.) It's not the same level of quality compared to those other films. Later that same decade, Alien also featured exceptionally good looking spacecraft models. And 2001 did a great job too from 1968.

This was the first Bond I saw at the Cinema so it will always hold a special place in my heart . A lot of people can't abide this movie. But I like it. Roger Moore was on top of his game after TSWLM Michael Lonsdale who played Drax was a good villian the special effects ( in camera & practical ) still hold up really well today. The skydiving intro is still jawdroppingly magnificent and of course Richard Kiel returns as JAWS. Moore had his tongue firmly planted in cheek & looks like he's having so much fun. So for the most part it's a movie you can have a bit of fun with & sometimes that's all it needs to be. As always keep up the good work Jen.

@Yngvarfo
@Yngvarfo Жыл бұрын
Because the real shuttle was delayed. I think they meant for this movie to come out at the same time as the shuttle launch, so that was another reason than Star Wars for changing the movie to a space theme. In a way, it seems a lot like a commercial for the space shuttle. This was my first James Bond movie, too, though I was already familiar with the basic plot of The Spy Who Loved Me from the novelisation and the MAD Magazine parody, including knowing who Jaws was.

It’s one of the most mood whiplash-iest films in the series. Dolly should've had braces that first time she and Jaws smiled at each other. In fact, I could swear that she originally did. How could the filmmakers have missed such an incredibly perfect sight gag? This is the only time that I actually believe there may be something to the Mandela Effect. Edit: come to think of it, some product did a spoof of Jaws (with original actor Richard Kiel) in a commercial years later, and when he meets a Dolly lookalike in a convenience store where she's working behind the counter, sure enough, she has braces.

Great reaction to a great movie. 😀 I was a huge fan of Jaws' redemption in this, and that he and his lady love survived. As mentioned previously, I loved seeing him as the Frankenstein's Monster knockoff in an episode of The Monkees and he was such fun in that role. Moonraker loses some points with Bond purists for being so . . . goofy in many ways. But it was just after the Star Wars phenomenon started, so Bond in Space was somewhat inevitable. The original novel has a passing resemblance to the movie: Drax uses rockets instead of space shuttles, which makes sense as the novel was written in the 50s, and the intended death of Bond underneath the rocket exhaust was pretty much taken directly from the book. Otherwise, I don't remember there being a lot of similarities between the two. In spite of its goofiness it is still one of my favorites, partly because it was the first Bond film I saw in the theater (I had seen a few others on TV) and partly because of the good redemption story for Jaws. "I shall have the pleasure of putting you out of my misery." is one of my favorite villain lines from a Bond movie, though my top favorite is still the exchange in Goldfinger: "Do you expect me to talk?" "No, Mr. Bond! I expect you to die!" It's sad, but the Daniel Craig Bond films just are meh to me. Their production values are excellent, and they do have some stories for the movies that were written by Ian Fleming (Casino Royale comes to mind as a novel written by Fleming), but they were just overall . . . meh. I like Daniel Craig as an actor, but Bond was just too often . . . wooden in the scripts he had. Enjoying the journeys through the legacy of James Bond! For Your Eyes Only should be next, unless I'm forgetful.

If I recall from the documentary about Moonraker, they built Drax's mission control layout to look like the interior of the pyramid, so the screens were at different angles. To make the screen content legible, they calculated how to rear project on to the screens at all the different angles to make it look good on camera. Let me also give a shoutout to the holding area where Dr. Goodhead was kept underneath the shuttle. We only see it for about 1 minute of screen time but I love the conference room that retracts into the floor. Completely impractical, but outragerously cool! That probably was a lot of work for a very small amount of screen time.

Yeah, I knew you would go crazy for the big finale in space. I love the idea of Bond in space too, so Moonraker is one of my favorites even though some fans view it as too over-the-top and silly in tone. It's so satisfying after You Only Live Twice teases the idea.

How educational! I never even heard of Arthur C. Clarke's "We'll Never Conquer Space" essay until you mentioned it around 4:37 -- thank you! Compared to the earliest movies, this is super-cartoonish -- but it's about space (which, yes, we can never conquer), so I endlessly (perhaps even infinitely?) forgive it. I have to respect Hugo Drax -- his whole "Let's remake the world in my image" plot was WAY more comprehensive than Stromberg's in The Spy Who Loved Me. There's a musical joke -- the electronic combination to the poison gas lab sounds like the theme to Close Encounters of the Third Kind. Many fans are not fond of the theme song, it's not "Bondian" enough -- but I think it works as a love song all by itself. Thanks, Jennypenny!

Hi, Jen. When this was produced CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND was trending. Remember when Bond gained entry to the laboratory? The touch tone keypad chimed out the 5 note alien response from that film. After the credits open the main body of the film, Bond mentioned in London that he should start in California. The pre credit pa

First Bond movie I ever saw in the theaters. Was not supposed to be next, but they wanted to capitalize on the Star Wars hype at the time, so jumped it up the rotation of Bond movies. I was 9 and didn't get why my dad laughed so hard at, "I think he's attempting re-entry".

Great review as always. MOONRAKER gets some hate from die-hard Bond fans, but it is surely a terrific, epic adventure. It is the last Bond movie to feature Bernard Lee (M), as he would pass away in 1980. I had the pleasure of meeting actress Lois Chiles (Dr. Goodhead) many years ago--and she was lovely in person! Michael Lonsdale (Drax) was a popular and talented French actor who made this villain so very memorable. Next up, FOR YOUR EYES ONLY (1981)--a very different Bond movie in tone.

Not gonna lie, *Sir Roger Moore* (R.I.P.) is my all-time favourite *James Bond,* and _'Moonraker'_ is my all-time favourite *Bond* movie! 🥰❤️ I'm ashamed to confess that I've been away from KZfaq for a while, so I've missed all your other *Bond* reactions… I, therefore, must of course go find them all (or a playlist, if you've created one)… Still, I really don't mind _'Moonraker'_ being the first reaction I see! 😏😄 Sending love, as always, from the UK 🙏🏻🥰❤️ *P.S. -* Just to blow your mind, those of us who grew up watching this, way back when it was first released, remember Dolly (Jaws’ girlfriend) having braces; his metal teeth & the metal on _her_ teeth was why they were attracted to each other! For years the production company tried to tell us it was a *Mandela Effect* & the she never had braces. But after the actress herself publicly said that, yes, she did have braces, that fact was quietly added to the movie’s IMDb Trivia page, and the makers have been silent on the subject since. 🤯🤯🤯

I did not expect you to enjoy this movie as much as you did. The film is considered too silly by fans compared to the previous 10 films but your enthusiasm is what kept me watching. I'm glad this film checked all of your boxes. I hope you enjoy the next one, For Your Eyes Only. It's more serious and based on two of Ian Fleming's short stories For Your Eyes Only and Risico.

This was my Mum’s first Bond film, and still her favourite. She loves the fun camp Bond over the serious Bond. I can’t follow her, I am more of Dalton Brosnan and Craig kinda guy, but this film is an absolute spectacle. And some of the best Bond music ever composed for the series, the track Flight into Space is seriously underrated and a beautiful piece to accompany them going into space. One curious interesting note is that Bond doesn’t carry his PPK pistol in this film, and apart from his wrist dart gun and the double barrelled shotgun, he doesn’t fire a single shot in this movie. Same thing happened curiously in Goldfinger, his PPK was absent in that too, he had to commandeer other firearms.
He sees meat everywhere 😄🥩
