You all left out the best part! For those that didn't watch the full episode, Beez was playing a prank on them. He added blue food coloring to the liquor during the first run. The reveal of the joke was the best part of the episode. The color is stripped out in the second distillation run.

I've watched Moonshiners since its early runs and have enjoyed the colorful characters that have come and gone. Throughout most of the run, Tickle seemed to be most people's favorite. I liked Tim, mainly because he was making the illegal moonshine while holding the prestigious position of Assistant Volunteer Fire Chief for the Village of Climax. But when Mark and Digger came along, they became my favorites hands down. They're funny, sincere, and abide by a strict code of honesty. And they prove that two heads are better than one.

Dude, KZfaq it. Its simple. I learned the principles in school when I was 13. Made my first batch at 14 (it was foul but worked, I fermented sugar, don't do it unless you plan on distilling it), a freinds mum taught me better and now at 28, while not to everyone's tastes, my wine (meads and cidres mostly) is finally good. Word for the wise, don't use home kits without prior knowledge, my wife tried to make caberneigh sovignon from a kit and the instructions were wrong, but we saved the batch because I knew what we were doing. Get some books by C J Berry, best books you will ever get on the subject, but John Seymores "self sufficuency" is great too, even if the brew/distill part is only a few pages. I am from Wales BTW, not USA.

A couple years ago a friend of mine invited me to his sushi restaurant to celebrate his father's 80th birthday. I'm not into drinking to get drunk, but when the old man waved me over to the kitchen I found myself sharing a $3300 bottle of cognac with him. It was very good tasting, sweet and warm, yet still quite smooth as I'm sure it was supposed to be at that price. For more than three grand it was a pretty small bottle, but I wouldn't know for certain what good, great or terrible cognac would be like.

cognac is fantastic for cooking too. I use it in a variety of ways; for example, it's extremely good with beef and potato stew. Also for any roast as a way to complement the sauce instead of using white or red wine. Too strong for desserts though, I use Licor 43, a spanish liquor that's perfect to that end.

@@waltershumer4211 the flavours are very different. Sometimes I use white wine, red wine, a borgonya wine, cognac, rancid wine, sweet liquors on desserts; but a juice is a juice, full of sugar and very distinctive flavour. It will overpower the flavours of the rest of the ingredients and sweeten the dish a lot. Not a problem if that's what you are looking for, but in my case sweetness must be faint, unless it's chicken with prunes.

You can buy a remote control outlet that plugs like a power strip, for outdoor Christmas lights or whatever. I brought one to work and plugged in a coworker buddy's stuff to it when he wasn't looking. Then, I'd randomly hit the remote in my pocket and turn all his gear off. When he'd start to investigate, I'd turn it back on again. It was hours of fun for those who knew what was going on. This is a good prank, but make sure there are no safety hazards involved like spinning blades.

I know you mentioned the cleaning solution but can your mash itself be so acidic that it tarnishes the copper to a turquoise blue?
@aSinisterKiid
@aSinisterKiid 2 жыл бұрын
Naw it's not the acid that makes copper tarnish. It's the chemical reaction with oxygen that causes it. Fresh copper reacts with oxygen molecules and a layer of oxidation forms on the surface. When you use stuff to clean the copper, it's that oxidation layer that is washed off that is green/blue in the water. But in this specific situation in this video that blue coming out of the still was actually a payback prank from Beez. He put blue food coloring in the still so the first distillation would come out blue and scare the old timers as a payback for the prank they pulled on him with the chipper. He knew the color would clean out in the second distillation and it wouldn't cause any problems other than scaring the crap outta Mark.

@@dudetapedtoafridge3073 just wait until they discover fractional distillation. Basically performing several distillation steps simultaneously. At least with ethanol, a vigreux column of 30cm length you can get on amazon is capable of performing 1.6 theoretical distillations, at least that's what i measured last time i purified ethanol to absolute anhydrous (200 proof). The highest theoretical distillations per heating run that i can currently perform at my lab, is 6 in one go. But this is using a piece of very expensive and complex glassware. Though it can be built of metal as used in the oil industry. I also suspect that the moonshiners in this show are not doing it illegally, but instead have the permits and just act as if they where moonshiners.

This was just a prank with food dye. But if you end up with blue shine it is because of copper sulphate build up (either from the still or from the packing in the collum). You can clean it by running a cycle of vinegar through your still once or twice (just like you clean a coffee maker) then running a cycle of plain water (to ensure the vinegar has been completely flushed) and then re destill whatever ended up blue.
