Mop Bucket Wheel Stuck Won't Swivel Turn Repair

How to repair mop bucket caster wheels that won't turn or swivel. I did this on a Rubbermaid mop bucket but this repair can be applied to pretty much any mop bucket that uses caster type wheels. Over time rust builds up and causes the shaft of the caster wheel to freeze up and get stuck in one position which prevents the bucket from rolling smooth and straight. Using a Dremel rotary tool I show you how to restore the shaft so it can rotate and move freely.

Great video! Thank you! Some suggestions for improvement: --Start with a wire brush to remove the rust. Drill attachments and angle grinder attachments are now widely available at Harbor Freight and hardware stores. (Sanding will remove more usable material than a wire brush. The more you preserve, the longer the casters will last.) --If you have time to wait, use rust converter and allow them to sit overnight.//If you don't want to wait, media blast with glass. (Again, trying to preserve usable material.) --Use bearing grease, garage door lubricant, or automotive brake grease around/on the shaft. Not much needed. They sell tiny packets at the counter at AutoZone and other automotive supply stores. (Silicone spray wears off easily with friction and WD-40 dries off after a while. The other lubricants mentioned will be more likely to stay in place and keep moisture from getting in.) --Thoroughly wash the inserts with soap and water. Then thoroughly dry with compressed air or a towel prior to inserting caster shaft. (Removing as much rust as possible will be beneficial in preventing future rust.) --Inspect and re-grease casters periodically BEFORE they stop functioning properly again. //End autistic fit.

can you take the wheel off the caster? I can't get either of the 2 that are frozen out but one of the 2 froze wheels is missing, I could just add the missing wheel and the 2 on one end work so just replacing the 3 inch wheel would suffice, any info advice welcome thanks?

Yes, you can remove the bolt that holds the wheel. I believe it's Allen (hex) wrench. I have done this to clean and lubricate the axle, they tend to get clogged with hair from pets.

If the wheels have a plastic cap on them will the plastic cap come off to reveal a rusted bolt?

I believe one side of the wheel axle is a hex bolt and can be removed and the axle can slide out from the wheel.

Why silicone spray and not grease ?

I would use grease as well. Either or. I guess I tend to go with the Silicone spray because I brush out the inside of the wheel insert to get the rust loose. The spray is thinner and it cleans and lubes. I'm a big fan of both :).

If it's a wheel like the one in the video, it will come out. Try using two flathead screwdrivers, one on each side. Sometimes they are hard to get out but it will eventually come out. You can also wedge the screwdriver between the wheel and the insert and use a hammer to tap on the screwdriver so it forces the wedge until the wheel comes out.
