The mop fly is a effective summer pattern when fishing for both stocked and wild trout. It’s plump mop body gives this fly the appearance of a grub, larvae, or short worm. The colors of the fly can be interchanged in order to imitate a variety of terrestrial and aquatic insects. In today's video I demonstrate how I tie my "inch worm imitation" mop fly and show you a rainbow trout I caught using this pattern last summer at Big Stony! I didn't know about putting the hook the mop material. For years I've been laying it on top with loose wraps and many came out crooked. Thanks!

You should try Crooked Creek in Carrol County Virginia they are stocking it 4 times with rainbow, brook, and brown trout if you can fish it on a week day because it gets a little crowded on Saturdays and Sundays it is a fee fishing area and you need to pay a 8 dollar fee at the pavilion or at the Walmart in Galax. It is a good fishery if you get the chance to fish there. Hope to see you on the creek!!

Are you just drifting it? Letting it fall and recast?

Yes. I'll typically cast the mop upstream and allow it to sink to the level I think the fish are holding at, and just let the current naturally drift the fly downstream. Though you can also strip the mop fly in like a streamer if you're wanting to add more action to your fly's presentation. Hope this helps!
