I'm sorry for the intro, but KZfaq does not allow me to delete it because the video has too many views, the intro ends at 0:43.
Thanks for understanding.
1 x ATX power supply
2 x Arduino UNO
12 x Floppy disk drives
... and more other recovery material, an old PC, cables etc ...
The software is written in Java, and uses the RxTxComm library to send data to the Arduino, which in turn sends the signals to the floppies.

@@hippyjoe Couldn't tell ya. I know HDDs were around for some time w/ abysmally small capacity (MBs) by modern standards for the same physical size as a modern TB ranged drive...while the 5.5 floppy (KB size) was around.

HAAAHHHH???? HOW? WHAT? THAT IS AMAZING. How can a collection of old floppy drives like the one found on a COMMODORE AMIGA 500? be able to play music? Any way Floppy Drives died off the market the same way as 8 TRACK TAPE, WHEEL TO WHEEL TAPE, MINI DISC, DAT (DIGITAL AUDIO TAPE) RADIO that got RADIO TUBES, BLACK AND WHITE TV SET. How about computer motherboards that contain ISA socket. More stuff no one makes any more COMMODORE 64, ATARI 800, COMMODORE AMIGA, COMMODORE VIC-20, ATARI LYNX There are millions of things out there its not made any more.

This is my absolute favorite of all floppy drive played Imperial march songs. I've come back to this video several times but didn't realize until now what a great reverb the board they are laying on gives the song! Absolutely evil and wonderful!

The notes are used either by varying voltage or using a pulse width modulator to control the speed the electric motors are spinning. Higher rpm=higher note. Very cool

How soon we forget. Back in the late 60's it use to be designer for a data center tour to have everyone stop by the chain printers (way before laser and inkjets ). At which time they would feed into the card reader a print program would print gibberish that sounded like a toon. I seem to remember many a printer singing out Anchors a way or twinkle twinkle little star. Now we have a near device to sing for us. Thanks and keep the tradition going. May the silicon chips be with you.

ho visto un video dei MOPPY su uno schermo nei corridoi nell'università. Purtroppo non c'era l'audio ma vedere il video e leggere sotto la descrizione mi ha fatto incuriosire così ho cercato su youtube se ci fosse il video e ho trovato anche questo. Appena la marcia imperiale è partita sono rimasto sbalordito nel sentire che, oltre ad essere identica, siete riusciti a far suonare quei floppy. Davvero complimenti, siete dei grandi! Comunque, essendo io un musicista, immagino che la parte più difficile qui sia stata il "comporre" la musica in base alla velocità dei motori e il suono che fanno vero? ahahah
