That's pretty amazing that the actual blade never came out of the handle despite shooting it multiple times with a 9mm. Usually I would only trust a true full tang knife in a survival situation, but Mora is definitely the exception. Great video as usual.

@@joex Yeah, the Robust didn't break at the tip test. The Mora Heavy Duty same, not breaking of the blade. It bend, but did not break. Interesting. I still like the Bushcraft Black better. Handle and blade. Too easy bending is not good either. Think of the Ka-bar.

@@joex Nah my friend, the Robust is just shorter. It's the Law of Physics -- the longer a knife is the more leverage when flexing it. I'd be willing to bet that if the Robust was as long as the Bushcraft Black it will break the same exact way. This same principle is why ALL of the longer blades never make it through your tests. It is only blades 4" and shorter that survive. I think the Bushcraft Black did well and didn't have any overt weaknesses. Would make a great wilderness survival blade. Regards, John

Best Mora for the price IMO, together with the Classic 2F. The 1095 ist pretty hard, but I think that's okay for a short knife like that. Of course, the low angle makes for reduced edge stability, but put a true scandi (or scandi-vex) on there and you'll be rewarded with an insanely sharp edge in addition to the very comfortable handle. I have one of these next to the driver's seat of my car.

I have an idea - hear me out... Instead of only performing impact abuse which is nice for certain occasions/accidents, etc, it'd be nice to see some abrasive cutting tests mixed into impact tests. Get the best of both worlds to truly see what different types of knives are good/bad at. It would be nice to see some hard cutting test, and then finish them off with the destruction to see how much it takes to then destroy the knife. Both are important, and essential to observe. It's been nice seeing how certain steels, edge geometries, and heat treats hold up/react to impact abuse; an abrasive cutting test would be a purely nice addition. A true double edged sword effect (being abrasive, and impact) - instead of just a single edged sword (being only impact). It does come off as a bit misleading indirectly in a knife's performance. Of course certain steels with certain heat treats, and with certain edge geometries will hold up better than others... It doesn't mean nor make it a better knife, depending on the job/chore its intended use will serve; bushcraft/survival or even a combination of the two... Sadly people will fall for this narrow mindedness. My friend watches your videos also, and thinks just because a knife with certain aspects (steel/edge/heat treat) can hold up to impact abuse, somehow translates into longer edge retention, etc - which simply isn't true. Yes... there are certain exceptions to some steels that can do both very well (your videos aren't the reason he thinks this way just to make it clear). This is why I suggested an abrasive cutting test could be added into the content for a fuller picture of the pros and cons of steels, heat treats, and edge geometries. Simple destruction of a knife doesn't tell the whole story, and leads to narrow minded ways of thought, such as believing wholeheartedly crap steel is somehow the best thing ever just because it can do one thing well, and sucks at pretty much everything else... Of course this one thing they do well at is the edge impact test. Just to make this clear - this is not a slight to your content. Please don't take it that way. I enjoy your content completely as a curious person who likes to see how different knives, and all their properties react to your tests. In fact I'd go as far to say some of the best knife tests in the knife community. The only thing missing is an abrasive cutting/slicing test which is the entire function of a knife; their function was never to be used as only a hammer/spear against steel, and rock, etc. Add abrasive cutting into the equation, and I feel this will help improve your content further. It'll bring in the edge retention cut/slice happy junkies, and the knuckle draggers who base the entire function of a knife solely as a tool it was never intended to be used as (a type of sophisticated spear chisel I guess?). Anyway... Keep up the content.

@@joex He's right you know. No one is doing comprehensive tests like that. If you just like seeing how easily knives break that's cool but if you're interested in knives as cutting tools this would add a huge amount of credibility to your tests and bring more actual knife users to your channel. You'd be *the* channel people come to when considering a new knife. What you're doing appeals almost exclusively to meatheads (i get the impression you're a smart guy pretending to be a meathead to be completely honest) and the morbidly curious, if you add cutting tests you'll appeal to almost everyone. A knife that cuts, retains an edge for a long time and can take a beating is what everyone wants, if you do the hard work for us we'll *all* watch.

@@joex Indeed. Cut test idea's if your down for them. Cut hard wood, box, and rope, etc. Test edge sharpness through out by cutting paper, etc. Once it fails that let the destruction begin. I also have another idea to help further the content to support the channel which will help bring more viewers in I'm sure; knife enthusiast. You could drop the knives on the ground in varies different ways after the cutting test as accidents do happen; dirt, gravel, concrete, etc. At the end of the day you're helping the knife community with such test. Your videos will have impact on knife purchasing decisions. If people are aware of it or not - videos such as yours will effect knife of choice. Even if it's just for entertainment - peoples subconscious will pick things up and effect decision making. Keep at it, and I hope for the best with your channel.

A thin, small knife did well in this testing? As a mechanical engineer, I'm shocked! (sarcasm). Morakniv knives may be inexpensive and good for feather sticking and carving small wooden animals. That said, I'd never buy one, because there are so many better knives out there, even for the low price. I'm confused about the fascination Europeans have with tiny bushcrafting knives. I'll keep my Ontario Spec Plus knives on me. They'll do all this, and much more.

It’s being realistic: you don’t need 500grams of blade on you, especially when you could rather carry 500g of water. I did several expeditions from Africa to Himalayas and I never had a thick chunk of steel besides machetes (and they are usually thin). At the same time I met lots of indigenous tribes and people that truly survive, they don’t do cosplaying like most Americans do. They don’t use thick chunk of steels and even when I showed them some, they weren’t interested because of the weight. People forget that, but weight is truly the determining factor. That’s to say that I’d personally rather carry a 100grams Mora than a 500 grams ESEE when they both have the same identical length.
@DDDYLN
@DDDYLN Жыл бұрын
@@clintwestwood3539 that's because they're already carrying a weighty spear or machete. If I had a machete, I'd only need a tiny knife to compliment it. Survival knives are for survival, meaning you manage to make several days before you're rescued, or find civilization.
@clintwestwood3539
@clintwestwood3539 Жыл бұрын
@@DDDYLN But that’s the point. They have the machete (as I did and as I specified before) and then a paring knife sort of. That’s about it. However the machete is usually really thin compared to what dumbassmericans try to propinate, it doesn’t go over 4mm, because of the weight. And that’s people that truly survives, day in and day out. They don’t play in the woods cosplaying people that survives, they do it everyday with really simple, but effective tools. On my first trip ever to Kenya (back in 1990s) I have a parang from an Italian company and it was thick af, around 6.5 mm. When I got there and had the pleasure to exchange words, food and beds with locals thanks to translators, they were confused on why would I ever carry with me such an heavy blade. I went hunting with them that time and, despite me being in good shape, especially compared to most cosplayers you find on KZfaq nowadays, I’d have trouble be as agile and swift as them, usually with more joints pain at the end of the day (they’d also sleep for a couple of hour during knife and keep on moving). That’s when I realised that heavy tools are not good tools if you truly use them while backpacking/hiking/hunting. I’d rather have a lighter tool and that’s most of what you will ever need since you’d mostly do cutting out in the wilderness. No stabbing, no splitting, no chopping. If you have to do the last two since you are programming to do so, you are better off with even heavier tools that will let you preserve energy and do it faster (since spending a truly cold night out, you won’t sleep much, you’ll have to keep on splitting woods from my experience and doing it faster and with less energy consumed it’s better). If you are splitting logs in your yard, you can use even machines, but you ain’t gonna use them in the woods if you have to walk up and down for 60 km a day. That’s my experience. I don’t like moras, but I’d rather take a Mora than an ESEE (or Ontario since they used to make knives for ESEE before they went with a better quality production) because of the weight. Weight is everything when you are out “surviving”.

@@clintwestwood3539 for that type of situation, a small knife makes sense. I own most of my knives because I have a bad shopping habit when it comes to knives. I fully admit it. When I go camping or hiking, they are short trips. And admittedly, self defense is one of my primary reasons for carrying a knife. It's a multipurpose tool for me. You're talking to a guy who conceal carries a pistol daily. My 17+1 round 9mm pistol, is much heavier than a knife. If I go hiking somewhere I'm actually allowed to carry it, I'm taking it. Most of the time the law prevents me from doing so. Personally, I think a lot of people carry their knives in a way that isn't ergonomic. I prefer to scout carry. You definitely don't feel the weight as much. Yes, it's a PIA to set up a knife sheath for scout carry. To me it's worth it.
