I love that all this attention was paid to absolutely everything, and still having the practicality to put a good functioning bench over methods which don't work for you on the project. It's absolutely gorgeous and inspiring.

I built a bench when I started 4+ years ago with a douglas fir top. I've flipped the top once and fiddled with vices & bench stops. This looks like exactly what I want: replaceable top,angled leg vice, blacksmith bench stop. And narrower than my current bench. Thanks for sharing it so I could see it!

I especially love the leg vice because it opens up so much space for the bottom shelf. I tried to angle the vice on my moravian bench, but couldn't make it work (I was using a vice screw and a guide bar with pin holes, didn't have a pin-less chain vice like yours). I guess will give the vice another go.

Thank you for sharing your twist on this. I made the Will Myers version and love it, including the tray. I admit I haven't tried living without the tray. I have been looking at the underside and thinking of what you did but would likely add a bank of drawers or two. The downside is it makes the portability of the design not possible. Of course I have yet to move it from my shop, so it is me stressing about nothing. Love the bench!

@Stefan Vogel Moravian is not German😐I am from Moravia which is placed between Czechia and Slovakia. Moravia has proud and long history. Great Moravia was the first state (founded around 830AD) in Central Europe spanning Czechia, Slovakia, todays Hungary, parts of Poland, Serbia, Ukraine, Austria, Germany, Croatia, and Slovenia. Now Moravia is part of Czech republic, but that's another story. How Moravians came to Germany: In 1722 Moravians, members of the very first organised protestant church in the world, Unitas Fratrum (Unity of Bretherns), fled religious persecution and settled in Saxony (Germany), where they founded Herrnhut. Unitas Fratrum was founded in 1457AD, before Lutherans, Kalvinists, Anglian church etc. From Herrnhut Moravians went as missionaries into many countries including America. Moravians were known in Germany for handicraft production and that was how they supported themselves in America as well. Hence Moravian workbench in todays US. And yes, we do have Moravian benches in Moravia 😉. And I just built one of them here in UK. Few hundred years from now and Englishmen will claim, that Moravians are Brits, because of my bench 😆😆

Love your bench! I wondered if you had a tenon at the top of the left front leg and a mortise on the underside of the top to resist pressure from the vise, but I realized the machine bolts and threaded plates are doing that job. Before you added the bolts/plates, did the dowels provide adequate resisting force?

Very nice build! The moravian (hey this is German as I am 😃) and the Nickolson were both on my short list last year. I decided for the latter in the knockdown version after reading Chris Schwarz book. I'm really happy with it, but since building a bench is so much fun I might build a Moravian soon, too 😂 The only problem is that all of the hardware parts you showed including the wooden screw are very hard to get in Germany...

This is my favorite workbench on KZfaq for all the same reasons others have listed in the comments. I live in a condo and want a workbench just like this, only smaller. I'm new to woodworking and don't have knowledge of wood variety. I do know that pine is considered soft and lightweight, but easily scratches/dents. What was your rationale for choosing pine? Also, if I were to forego soft wood, what combination of hard woods would you recommend? Lastly, is there anything you would add/delete after working with the bench over time?

When you say that you used "southern yellow pine" -- did you use dimensional lumber from a big box store or something from a lumber yard/or wherever? Thinking about making one soon!

Great build alot of work and expense! I'm surprised you did not just use a tenon block and wedges to hold the top on place then? Bolts snd a ratchet wrench just well so out of place, still scratching my head! Need a new conclusion to this bench! Good work on it all thumbs up from me!

Was that because the holdfast was in a hole in one of your half-tops while attempting to apply clamping pressure on the other?

This is a pretty solid little workbench. While once you figure out how it comes together, it is physically Easy to assemble kzfaq.infoUgkxyFZUPFEey-PuqsPMxqaykBhgA1LWxFHh by yourself. But the diagrams explaining the steps are really pretty bad. I could not get the handle pins in all the way despite multiple attempts, so I just used a screw I had on hand for the 2nd handle. I could not get the first pin in further or pull it back out. You are supposed to hammer it in, but I had no leverage and the handle is plastic and I did not want to risk breaking it. I will get a lot of use out of the bench because of the convenient size and height. It does fold up nicely for storage. They even explain how to fold it so you don't get pinched...that is important!

OutSTANDING! I love the hybridization of the Moravian with the Roubo, and you NAILED the balance, there! That is to say: you did a superb job of keeping the strengths of each while ditching some of their... call it "less-amazing elements." The problem with the Roubo is it relies both on too many hard 90's and the (somewhat fiddly, in some cases) precision joinery of big, heavy, expensive blocks of timber, meaning you're doubly screwed if you cut something a bit too wide. My beef if the Moravian really boils down to its relative lack of mass and (personal preference, here, albeit) the fact I hate sawdust tra- err, "tool trays". Admittedly, I can take or leave leg vices, though I absolutely acknowledge the structural significance in this case, and, let's face it: that was a sexy-ass implementation you didn't there. It sure as hell ain't gonna HURT nothing, and again... that's a HOT example of it! Well done, man!
