This was a rough week in the PS5 landscape as SIE announced mass layoffs affecting many succesful PlayStation Studios. From Insomniac Games, to Naughty Dog, Guerrilla, and the closure of London Studio, it's been rough to sift through. We're also learning that the working conditions and leadership at Firesprite since they were acquired apparently hasn't been all that great either. At least we have some semi-positive news for Helldivers 2, Rise of the Ronin, FFVII Rebirth, and the PlayStation Portal. Plus the best news of all? LBP Hub resurfaced, AND we got a new PS3 Firmware update in 2024. So ya know, there is some light where there's darkness.

Just heard this news, whilst it's really pleasing to hear, I hope their deal they are in talks about allows them to continue with what we assume is spyro 4. I've been holding out on it for a loooong time. Crash is decent but spyro is the goat and from the reignited trilogy and the crash games (including team rumble where they made spyro a fully playable 3d platformer character that stayed true to the OG controls), I think they've got the hang of the IPs and want to see what they can do next

Like the overall premise of your comment is absolutely outlandish, but I'll entertain it because I want to see how you'll explain this scenario. Nevermind that the games you download are on the hard drive itself (when P.T. was delisted from the PS Store, although you can't download it, you'd still have access to it if it was installed on your hard drive).

I can't comprehend how 30 people upvoted this comment. Digital games already work without the need to connect to a server. A firmware update will not change that or make them any more or less playable.

Not the first time it happen when they swapped the Play and Data disc. Mortal Kombat 11 Ultimate Edition had the exact same issue.

It's no real surprise. Micro transactions killing game companies. Premium skins costing $10 getting old. I'm 52, I use to buy at least 8-10 game per year. Now I'm down to 2 or less a year. Now games with seasonal content feel like a job. 13 weeks to grind for useless things. Oh well.

But more than 8-10, the strat is just to buy games that are like a buck up to maybe 20. All games except Nintendo end up there. Also bundles on pc are great too,

Have been playing through the Little Big Planet games again on the PS3 and Vita. Amazing fun. Forgot just how good these games are! If only they would bring a new version of the hub out on PS5...

@kimchi_b for sure. The first is great but I think 2 is better and 3 is also as good.. had a buggy launch but now it plays fine. Just a shame you can no longer access the community levels but the campaigns still make them worthwhile. Also recommend the PS Vita one.

What a shame about those community levels, it makes me glad to be older as I couldn't imagine a childhood where loads of digital stuff I really loved is just suddenly gone forever.

@kimchi_b Ah they will be a blast with the relatives! Hope you have fun. The community levels were still accessible with the PS4 version of LBP3 up until a few months ago when they 'temporarily' shut them down due to hackers or something. Who know if they will come back. We can only hope.

If 3 is as good as 2 I can go for the PS4 version of that in case the community levels come back as I did like many of them back in the day and understand the levels were far more diverse in type etc than in the first game. Love my portal, allows me to play on my PS5 far more often than I used to, as the Mrs wants to watch things on the TV. Now I can sit and us the portal in the same room and she’s happy I can talk to her…wife approval was worth the money.

Yeah this is one of the biggest niche audiences for the portal, I think. I fall into the same category as you and I also think the portal is fantastic.... but I knew what the portal was before buying it and knew what to expect etc.

FFVII Rebirth may be one of the few times I prefer the look of the western disc art. When you line them up side by side (like when they're in the deluxe edition steelbook) the art connects and it shows the last fight with Cloud and sephiroth from part 1!

I had the same defect on MK11 with the discs being swapped and recently I actually went back to the game and had forgot lol. It is very confusing can’t believe they’re still doing these things

The PS3 needs to update Bluray encryption keys? If the PS3 has to do it, what about any other Bluray player? And does this mean that an old Bluray player without updates will at some point just not be able to play some (probably newer) Bluray discs?

@@CharlieAlienall blu ray players have to update keys, or new blu rays won’t play. Many ways to do this. If your player is online it’ll do it automatically as one example

@@adamthiry868 I heavily doubt that. You know as well as I do that companies do not provide updates anymore for obsolete products. A cheap low-end bluray player from 5 years ago will most certainly not receive any firmware updates today. I can't remember that my OPPO player has received any in that time.

PS3 is considered a software player, so it has a different way of handling keys due to piracy. Same thing with a PC BD player (for all the 43 people who have one of those) But Yes, there are discs released that will not ever work on some regular hardware based players. This can be due to either unavailable keys, or if the player is so old it can´t get into the disc menu because of API and UI development of the standard that happened too long after those early players released for actual functionality updated. So in those cases new keys unlocks nothing. Up to this point though, PS3 is still the most compatible BD player on the market. And may very well still be that at the point BD as a film format is completely dead.

I need an update that will fix the Cbomb. I discovered I can no longer play my purchased digital games on PS3 if I unplug it, and don't sync the time on the internet. Being unable to play "free" Plus games, I understand. Being unable to play games I paid for is inexcusable.

Not exactly. Say for instance, I've synced the time, and then my internet went out. I'd still be able to play the digital games I bought, as well as Plus games. It doesn't need to be online for that. It's unplugging the console from the wall that causes the problem. I'm also not sure if it would be negatively affected by a power outage.

A very brief history. Psygnosis becomes Studio Liverpool > Sony buys Studio Liverpool > Sony Closes Studio Liverpool. Founders of Psygnosis start Firesprite > Sony buys Firsesprite > ....can you see where this is going ? Sony has a habit of telling studios it owns that it wants new games that will show of any new Tech they intend to bring out, [They did it with Studio Liverpool a LOT ] case in point Firesprite has invested heavily into making VR games, or the VR portion of games......Since the VR2 helmet has basically tanked, I imagine that's the reason for the layoff's, and I wouldn't hold my breath on any SONY owned Studio working on any major VR titles.

From my decades of experience working retail jobs, whenever new leadership enters an established business, people tend to revolt against the change. That’s my guess as to what’s happening at Firesprite. People do not like change, and when a new manager, with a new management style enters the fray, people turn tribal. I’ve seen it a million times, and have even been a part of it, on both sides. You can never take things like that at face value, and we have no idea what’s really happening at Firesprite.

Wouldn't surprise me if some wanted to continue to be treated like a special little boy or friend instead of having to take account for their mistakes, not doing their tasks in time (it's also their job to say what time they need but this should be close to reality). Not saying managers/upper managers/CEO don't also have their faults on unrealistic timetable and asking for changes mid project that can throw 50%+ work to the trash, having a good planning and vision of the project is very important.

Recently had a serious back injury - was laid out for a couple months. The entire time I played the PlayStation Portal. It was a game-changer for me and allowed me to keep up with games during downtime while being unable to sit at the TV. Very happy for the purchase.

It is undoubtedly a complete failure of leadership and management at virtually every sony studio but ESPECIALLY naughty dog. They had one of the biggest games ever, a successful TV series and they still couldn't find a way to keep all their people? It pains me to say it because I almost worked there, I dreamed of working there. Thankfully I was given a very honest and blunt interview before diving headfirst into a total s***storm. This is a sickening debacle and the sooner it all falls apart, making a total reorientation unavoidable, the better.

I have mixed feelings about Sony London. They aren't the studio they once were in the early days or into ps3 life cycle that made games like the getaway or eight days. They seemed to only produce gimmick games/short playtime vr. I assume everyone mostly left with visions anyway

I've been playing Persona 3 Reload on my Vita via PS4 Remote Play recently and it just made me realize how garbage the PS Portal is when considering its limited functionality and price. Sony could just admit they screwed the Vita by not supporting it, learn from their mistakes and develop a competent handheld platform but instead they just pumped out a glorified paperweight. The fact that this is what has become of the legacy of the PSP is criminal.

6:40 They had mechs in HD1 as well so I'm surprised they don't have them in HD2 already. How essential the mechs were to the game, well... They were fun for the first skill levels but eventually you outgrew them so they are mostly a callsign for newbies. We let them use them as long as they don't trample us, slow the group down or TK everybody because they can't aim.

I love the Portal the thing about this device is you need a good internet connection. It’s not about how fast your internet is it’s more about overall coverage. Once you figure that out the system works flawlessly and I’ve used it a lot. Especially when there’s parts of a game I know I’ll have to grind it’s much more relaxing doing it laying in my bed or sitting outside on the deck enjoying the nice sunset.

First off, the masses never wanted a new Twisted Metal game. Second, The new Twisted Metal was going to be a live service game. It had failure written all over it. Twisted Metal was great in the 90’s. The 90’s is where it needs to stay.

@@ltw126 We can't say one way or the other, we didn't see the game. Judging by the reception of the TV show, I have to completely disagree. I think it could have been very popular. Just because a lot of companies have released bad live service games doesn't mean live service is inherently a bad thing. Look at Helldiver's 2. Some of the most popular games out are live service

@@B-U-T-C-H-E-RJust because Helldivers 2 is successful doesn’t mean Twisted Metal would’ve been successful. 90% of gass are not successful. Plus we are in the early days of Helldivers 2. Let’s see how well Helldivers 2 is doing in April or June.

@@ltw126 It will depend how well their post launch support is. It being a $40 purchase makes it successful right off the rip anyway. Again fortnight, Apex, warzone, Warframe, destiny, Diablo............. There are many successful live service titles, your opinion doesn't affect facts

The Portal still seems so pointless to me when you can do the exact same thing with either a phone or a tablet using the remote play app, and a DualSense controller connected by Bluetooth. Hell, there’s even some 3rd party cases you can attach to the controller and put your phone into. The entire point of the Portal can be replicated at a much cheaper cost

The Witch Queen going into essentials is yet another example of extra and premium being treated as unimportant. It has been in those tiers for quite some time now, and its weird that they would suddenly add it to essentials as well. Someone said to me "Well when its taken down from the extra tier, you will still have it. And it will be taken down at some point" but that makes no sense seeing as Sony owns Bungie, and the only game they have ever removed to my knowledge from a studio they own was Spider-Man because the remaster was getting a proper release.

I re setup my PS3 2 days ago to play Drakengard 3 and thought I was seeing things when I saw a system update for the thing. One actual update I want to see for PS3 (if possible) is giving the PS3 the ability to display PS5 trophy lists like they did for PS4 trophy lists

My only problem with Rise of Ronin and similar games, is the animation/character movement speed, it’s just too fast. I’d look more realistic a little slower and more fluid.

I'm very happy there is an easy mode for Sifu. I tried it on PC when it came out and it was way too hard for me. Accessibility is a major feature that needs support in all games. Congrats to SE for the success of the FF7 remakes. I really hope that one day we'll get a remake for FF8 and FF10. Those are my favorites. I would buy those two so hard if they remake them.

PS Portal is just weird. Save a bit and get a SteamDeck OLED instead. It can do the PS Remote Play as well. It has a better screen, better features, and it's also an actual standalone gaming PC, capable of running various games and emulators.

SteamDeck (OLED) is neat. But apart from being quite far from P&P for most users for PS streaming purposes, it's also about twice the price. Highly recommend on its own terms though. Especially if one like retro. And even more so if expecting the PSP to ever be practical for that. Somehow a reverse P&P situation with SD there.. ;)

@@StoppskyltenHmm, idk, maybe you are right. I consider myself far from being a Linux geek or an advanced user, but I found it quite easy to set up the PS streaming on SteamDeck. Sure it's not quite P&P, but it's still easy and once setup, it launches/works fast and hassle free. But to each his/her own.

@@xikesgaming Ok, maybe I'm just not up to date on third party remoting from PS. But last time I did it there was a process getting system ID keystrings, extrating them as actual hex key, and then manually inserting them into a conf. Maybe that is now automated somehow? Not saying that some 1337 hacking skills are needed for that.. But it is obviously still lightyears away from what the average consumer electronics user would even try after a brief glance at the instructions. Even most computer users would react the same nowadays. What I mean is that most are simply completely lost if things don't work after the exe is clicked and the setup is over. And even with how simple the Portal is to sync, I still seen plenty failing because they have no clue how settings in their network or even PS5 affect the outcome. "Remote start doesn't work!" Because it was turned off, and they skipped the part of the setup warning about it. This is also true for enthusiast or even so called tech channels on YT. So sure, there are no issues recommending the option of SD to actual "avid Linux users". But the problem is, those users are probably the only ones who don't need it recommend as they as such already found out the what and hows. ;)

This whole live-service cancellation thing is bad and kind of good, the good is that not many people like live service games for many reasons, the bad news is that many games were cancelled and time and money was wasted, which also caused layoffs. Hopefully things don't get any worse.

Anecdotally, the Portal seems to be perfect for people who share a tv or parents trying to get some gaming sessions in. I'm a Dad with two kids aged 4 and 1; this thing has been a godsend to allow me to play PS5 more than I have for a year. It's not perfect and I had to follow around with my home network to get it to run well, but it's great when it works.
