Hurst Castle is a 16th Century fort on the south coast of England with a Victorian addition. Coastal erosion has resulted in the partial collapse of a wall. English Heritage are responsible for the maintenance of the Castle. In 2020 the sea defences in nearby Milford-on-Sea were breached and repaired at a cost of over £2 million.

Excellent video of action being taken too late on such an historic landmark

What's to be done about it? Building right next to the ocean has never been a good idea. It seems scenic and nice at the beginning, but there's nothing practical about it.

There's something darkly humorous about the labeled, "Area at Risk", which is adjacent to the area that's already in ruins, which appears to be even more at risk. Is there a practical but comprehensive solution happening?

Of course, it was the later addition that likely created the problem with its encroachment and sea walls. The area has lost its sand deposition sources due to the enormous number of coastal 'protections' that have been installed (and the Victorian era construction). The sand now is likely being deposited into the entrance area of the marina and requires dredging. Once you commit to armoring a coast you commit to endless maintenance and the creation of potential erosion problems for miles up and down the coast. Also, the many thousands of pleasure boats zooming by don't help with their destructive wakes.

Rising sea levels will make it impossible to save many coastal sites.

You need to just give up and walk away. If you watched any videos at all on KZfaq about global warming and erosion around the world, you can see that it is a futile effort. Put your resources elsewhere.
