Don't try to open sth that stucked (especially in old soviet buildings). If it's not running, we'll it's not running... But if you managed to open, probably you'd need to replace lots of stuff there... Even if these buildings were build properly in that time they're often "maintaining free". Nobody don't take care of it, mostly, at all and they wait when it fall apart to loose place for another constructions... This "waiting rule" works for both soviet and historical buildings.

Janek you should visit Astana Kazakhstan and wear Borat official swimsuit with Honza you will look great, some Czechs were arrested there for these antics last year LOL. It looks like Borat is very popular in CZ.

We’re flying to Almaty in October :) any tips for us? (Apart from the borat swimsuit? We don’t look great in those) :)

+HONEST VLOG well can't recommend anything specific though I was born there, you can check wikitravel on Almaty. I've heard of Sharyn canyon , Green Market, Medeu...if you look for some local food you can try Kumys and Beshbarmak , Lagman, Kazakh cognac is surprisingly good for its price.
