Haha.. I am always baffled by how much stuff people can accumulate. KZfaqrs are especially good at it. My shop is absolutely full of stuff so I'm no exception. But it is really extraordinary how we accumulate stuff till the point where there is no room for doing work in the shop without moving half of it first.

At the 9:00 mark on tips 568 you said this is some kind of puller. It is infact an automotive valve spring compressor. it allows you to remove and reinstall valve seals with out removing the head from the engine. I’m a retired electrical engineer and have started to setup a small workshop to keep my brain working. I really enjoy your videos especially the auction ones. I live in the UK and we do not seem to have the type of auctions that you go to. I have been trying to get hold of a Kennedy or similar machinist toolbox but they are extremely expensive in the UK, I’m talking about £100 to £150 for one with a lot of rust. Again, your videos are very enjoyable and informative keep up the good work.

@@mrpete222 Very sad that I couldn't save a beautiful Herbert No9 lathe from the scrap man. The boxes of Herbert adjustable reamers were worth it on their own. I wish I could show you the other things we salvaged. Two of the surface plates date from wartime (1942). I'm keeping one and selling the other. @@daleburrell6273 Maybe not forever but the majority of the 1960's (I have the delivery note) machines are not going to die, they are going to India. The sad part is our economically illiterate government with no discernible industrial strategy is sitting back and letting this happen. The only reason the works was closing is because the wiring isn't up to standard and they couldn't borrow the money to rewire. Our government was happy to hand over, at a conservative estimate, £2.2 trillion to our crooked bankster class. Nothing doing for industry! We will regret loosing the skills and machinery from our engineering base. Nothing lasts forever but this was vandalism.

I don't know how restorable that Prentiss is, but I did a similar Yost that was in maybe a bit better shape a year or two ago- swivel jaw vises very rarely show up in my area despite many things rare elsewhere being common here- with similar issues. Made new jaw faces then taper-reamed for a new swivel pin, and made a new pin with a proper fit for a removal wedge, sized for a standard chuck removal wedges. Hardest part was getting the swivel free in the first place, as it was rusted and painted in place- prior owner 'restored' it- and there was a bolt screwed into the unthreaded hole where the pin belongs.

I think the #20 Prentiss vise is restoreable with some brazing and some body filler where the cast iron is chipped near the top of the jaws I restored an old Craftsman vise 4 inch from about the same era it also had bent handles I probably spent way too much time on it but it works well and looks nice now. A website called the garage journal has photos of nothing but restored vintage vises like your old Prentiss the are almost works of art compared to modern vises.

I have that exact Craftsman vise. We were on a 16 month road trip in our RV looking for a retirement spot. I was getting pretty bored with RV life so I started to go to local swap meets. I found the vise for $40, cleaned it up and mounted it to a folding aluminum bench I picked up at Lowe's. This became my portable work shop while we were on the road. You need to start taking a hand truck to those auctions, or maybe a little wagon so you can wheel those treasures back to your vehicle.

Lots of companies made various tools at different times for Craftsman. The planes were made by Stanley, Sargent, and others - you can tell which the manufacturer was typically by examining the lateral adjuster and a few other components. The first 3 digits of the model number indicate the manufacturer, but the only list I've found is on the vintagemachinery website and it is both focused on stationary tools and only semi-complete (and they reused numbers sometimes.)

You are right, I bought one of these years ago. You use it to pull valve springs on engines by putting air in the plug hole with a adapter hose, or put the piston at TDC to keep the valve from falling into the cylinder. Replaced hundreds of springs and valve oil seals without pulling the heads when I was drag raceing and working on engines in the shop years ago, still in my tool box and would not take anything for it, still usefull in todays engines, at least for us old timers.

I have one of the Craftsman Commercial horizontal bandsaws and would not part with it. This saw is perfect for the home shop and works wonderfully for me. It came from my uncles shop when he was no longer able to work in it. I replaced the rubber tires on the wheels and I am still on the first Lennox blade I purchased for this saw, almost 2 years ago. And I have cut a ton of metal with it. Maybe instead of parting your saw out, if it is complete that is, it would make a great saw for a home shop machinist and refill your wallet.

Possibly the reason that some people get a little miffed when you call things junk is that they actually use those things and like them. The younger folks don't have 50 years under their belt to have collected a hoard of high quality tools, and are using the things that are being made today, which is unfortunately not the same unless they are willing to empty multiple pocket loads of green. Maybe I'm wrong though, who knows.

Kromedge is an old craftsman gimmick from the late 80s-90s or so. The cutting edges of some cutting tools - mostly saws and table/circ saw blades - were chromed for longer edge durability before a first resharpening. Similar to Titanium Nitride and other coatings today, but those are for other purposes. Did it work? No one seems to know for sure. But they're no longer made, so if they did it wasn't enough for the consumer to notice or care vs simply buying a much better tool. Some of the hand saws had a nice design on the plate though.

I really think that prentiss could clean up, I had a similar crack in a vise. I ended up brazing the crack, it’s held up so far. Would make a fun video I’m sure.

I remember my 1st "big" vice was thrown for me to find. It was split as the one you bought. Eventually I persuaded a friend at work to weld it. Lasted me years. My son has it on his bench now.

I know a lot of people complain about the buyer's premium, but you're still getting things you want for pennies on the dollar. What the buyer's premium does is allow the auctioneer to charge a lower commission to the seller, who is usually a widow or an old farmer.

most of the auctioneers around here are crooks. they take "phantom" bids when no one is raising the bid.

@@commando340 when the other guy keeps bidding he obviously thinks its worth that much, or he wouldn't bid. Nobody is making him pay too much. If the auctioneer is running up the bid and the other guy quits, he has to buy the item. Seen it many many times.

It's good you got some items sold on eBay so you could afford to go to more auctions. Nice set of plunder me matey! Arrrg!

At the beginning you admitted you had some vises. You do. At least with the vices you possess, you have something tangible to show for it. Gambling with tired iron instead of slow horses. Makes perfect sense to me.
