Disney always has a place in my heart, as does VoicePlay. And Halloween. And when they all combine, well it's instantly on my "must see" list. This song, taken from "The Princess and the Frog" is such a wonderous introduction to this holiday season, and an incredible composition once again by VoicePlay!
Join professional opera singer Elizabeth Zharoff, as she listens to VoicePlay performing "Friends On The Other Side" for the first time.

Awesome review and some genius decisions by VP throughout. Toward the beginning Eli does a solo after J sprinkles his head. But his words are actually J’s character speaking through him. Such a neat touch. At the end on Geoff’s bass drop, I think it’s a nod back to the hip hop section. Geoff’s bass sounds like a rattling car stereo and Layne comes in with the DJ scratches. It is so cool and I enjoyed your analysis.

In a movie you can get away with stopping the music and vocals in the middle of a song to do some more dialog or what have you, but in a cover like this it would be awkward, so delivering the dialog as a sort of rap to keep the musical flow moving is definitely the way to go. Maybe not the only choice, but almost certainly the best/smartest one.

Besides his voice work, he was also Mary's stepfather in _There's Something About Mary (1998),_ and the general at NASA in the Bruce Willis 'blow up the comet' movie _Armageddon (1998),_ for those who want to put a face to the voice.

I love how they re-created the storyline from the movie just like they did in Oogie Boogie. I believe Keith David did those vocals as well. Neat fact about Dr. Facilier‘s name. Did you notice during the hoodoo voodoo section that the sacrificial chicken 🐔 was HeiHei from Moana? Also the set was used in Geoff’s cover of Way Down. Pretty funny to hear you explain that those ooooohs are generally spooky sounds since you just finished contributing yours to this year’s Halloween video😂. Thank you for explaining how all the vowels affect the overall mood. Now I have to go back and listen to karaoke tracks again. As someone with no musical training I have found that listening to analyses like yours and then listening to the karaoke track really helps me appreciate the entire performance and not just the lead vocals which has always been my general inclination.

Best song ever for Halloween is Bauhaus' Bela Lugosi's Dead live at Coachella. You should totally react to that. Peter Murphy is a goth icon and that song is considered the first goth single. If possible, don't look at the thumbnail before the reaction. It's a surprise. That Coachella performance was one of a kind. Would like to see you do a deep dive on Axl Rose. I'd love for an explination on what people are taking about for his nom falsetto voice singing. He is considered a bass-barriton but has a near 6 octave range that goes higher than oprha sopranos using some technicque Ive never heard you discuss here. If you get interested. make sure to crowd source which songs. He doesnt often play with his low range, but he's in Garth Brooks Friends in low Places "low" type range amd his upper end chops and the overtones and quality of his voice is what made him a star. Massive endurance as well. Easily some 30 second power notes he's held. It'd a shame he let himself get out of shape, but it's thought some of the loss has just been because of damage due to the techniques he choose. "Deal with the devil" type thing. Likely wouldnt have been as big without taking on the damaging style.

17:04 That 'interesting rattle' by Layne, I'm thinking that's all him, not a production effect. It reminds me of how he ended 'We Don't Talk About Bruno', with his voice distortion there, containing a raspy hum and (I think) a bit of 'ingressive phonation', or 'inward bass beatbox'.

1:45 Quick note: "Faciliter" is the actual French translation for "to facilitate" . "Facilier" would actually be closer to the French word "facile", which means "easy"... so on the whole, this wouldn't change your interpretation (as "the one who facilitates") too much 😉

00:51 J. is amazingly good at buying into the 19th-century Southern white stereotype of "a blackamoor rolling his wicked eyes at me" while knowing EXACTLY what he's doing. The top hat is a direct callout to Baron Samedi from NO's voudun culture. 01:08 The glitter is an allusion to Doctor John (a voudun believer and practitioner) and his gris-gris music at the beginning of the 70s. The Doctor always put glitter into his gris-gris bag, and scattered it during performance to enhance the "spells" of his music. 01:46 Docteur Facilier could also be translated colloquially to "Doctor Git'r'Done." 04:04 I believe the only voice they processed at this point was Geoff's; I think they Autotuned the hell out of him here. 04:25 Not only is Layne's bone-in-the-nose a bow to B-movie stock "savages," it's a direct allusion to Screamin' Jay Hawkins, who wore an identical [prop] bone whenever he performed "I Put a Spell on You." (A clip holds it to his septum.) 13:07 That ain't Voudun, that's basic psychotherapy!

I've got a suggestion to check out as well, "Pure Massacre" by Silverchair. Daniel Johns has an amazing voice and was I think 15 or 16 when Silverchair released their first album.

A little late to the party here, but catching up on videos. I think Geoff's face give you an idea of the creation of the strange rattle on the bass beat. In fact you even paused it right on his face while you were trying to figure out what's going on. It's at 17:03 in your video. If you watch (and listen) closely during the entire performance, it seems that Geoff is handling the bass beat while Lane is handling the snare, cymbals, and toms sounds.

I don't sing and I don't play an instrument in fact I don't understand music let alone singing but I thoroughly enjoy it. To help me understand could you answer two questions, 1 what is singing what separates it from other noises that come out of the mouth? 2 can anybody sing with the right teaching and practice assuming they have undamaged vocal chords and can breath normally? Many thanks for your analysis and comments they are helping me to understand.

Hi, have you ever done anything by Journey? I would love to hear your analysis of SP's vocals. Separate Ways could be one song to listen to..... Cheers Joe :)
