Takes me back to 94 & 95 , used to stay at the hotel opposite that very shell truck stop in Alice Springs , they served the best ice cream mixed fruit . I loved it when the Shell or BP tankers came in with the Mack's up front . Young free & single back packing around the world those were the days . If you like to see a RT or two you could walk into any yard in town and they was happy for you to have a look see . See ya .

Loved the old Mack Ultra liner at the start of the video, 35 odd years old and still powering 9n!

That is such a beautiful sight.......... I travelled Aus in '98-'99 I loved the outback, and I loved those trucks I stayed at a few of those Roadhouses Threeways, Glendambo, and if that's the same Shell Servo, North of Alice, on the Stuart Highway, I applied for a job there. Didn't get it. I had a choice at Three ways, turn left for Alice, or right for Darwin. I turned left for Alice, and my experiences there changed my life, I left a different person to who I arrived as. I ended up working on those trucks, at a place called Agserve Industries, North of Alice, on the Stuart Highway, If I remember correctly I started as a Yard man, but ended up doing services and repairs to the trucks, I'm a Mechanic. I tried driving one of those big semis once, I got about six foot, before I realised I didn't have a chance...... I loved hearing those trucks using the exhaust brakes, coming into outback towns, late at night, echoing out across the still, cool outback air. I'd sit and watch them pulling away in the mornings, having iced coffee and roll ups for breakfast......... The main thing I notice is, there are more, flat nose Euro style Semis, hardly ever saw them back then. An Iconic image of outback Aus, and one I'll always remember Hope they never disappear.

Nice D Model Mack cabover. One doesn't see those very often in America today. In Australia that may be different.

Some cars are able to connect to the last trailer and travel free for thousands of miles, the driver unaware.

I feel really bad for those truckers since they have to spend so much money on fuel

Something like a litre per kilometre in some cases

@@OzOutbackchannel Nah, it averages 1.5 kms per litre loaded one way/empty return, pulling 3. But increases substantially, even dramatically with poor windage, & can get down to 100 mts/L at say 10% climb. I used to save 300 Lts on the first figure with 3 loaded flat tops, between Perth & Hedland (1650 kms) by running at 90/92 kmh on a Cat C16. That's quite a saving considering that its just one very long day's run. Trick is to drive under the turbo. When that kicks in, even at 26 psi boost, its voracious. Empty, the turbo will still kick in to boost it to whatever you're wanting to travel at, then out again. engaging cruise will increase consumption. Long retired, but now & then I miss my truck.

If you want to know the details, see my reply. Otherwise, my fuel bill was $10,000 per week (up to 7 years ago)
