STORYLINE:
Israeli troops backed by about 20 tanks and armoured vehicles entered the Palestinian town of Beit Hanoun in the Gaza Strip early Sunday, killing one Palestinian.
The tanks, accompanied by attack helicopters, headed for the center of town, firing on a house and blocking all access roads, as soldiers using loudspeakers imposed a
curfew, confining residents to their homes, witnesses said.
Palestinian youths throwing stones and small groups of armed men resisted the incursion.
One 27-year-old Palestinian was killed and about seven wounded, hospital officials said.
The Israeli military would say only that there was an operation in progress there. An Israeli soldier was lightly injured during the operation.
Beit Hanoun is in the northeast corner of Gaza, opposite the Israeli town of Sderot, a few kilometers (miles) outside the territory. On Wednesday, Palestinians fired homemade Qassam rockets at Sderot, injuring an Israeli.
Meanwhile in Jerusalem, Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon held his weekly cabinet meeting.
