With regards to the MegaDrive emulation on the gPi, the system uses Retroarch, which should have a selection of a few different emulators (Called cores) to pick from. It's not an issue with the emulation, it's the case. It's pulling audio from the headphone jack and only running the right channel out of the single speaker on the case. 2800mah rechargeable batteries work great on the GPi Case... works for several hours.
@SteveBrandon4 жыл бұрын
Even a decade ago, rechargeable AA's were still a bit "naff", at least in high-drain items like digital cameras, but I find that rechargeable AA's sold today work great. I use rechargeable Duracells in my CD Walkman that I still use and I've really only ever had to throw out one or two of the roughly dozen that I've bought since early this decade because they stopped being able to hold a charge.
@bstar7777774 жыл бұрын
Steve Brandon and if you get a charger that can recondition the batteries (NIMH), you will get even better performance out of them.
@mbirth4 жыл бұрын
There are Li-Ion batteries in the form of AA cells now. You just need to rewire the battery compartment so it's 2x2 in parallel instead of 4 in series. But this should last a lot longer than with normal AA rechargeables.
@SteveBrandon4 жыл бұрын
@@mbirth Last week, I bought a Fujifilm camera from circa 2012 from a Value Village thrift store for all of $7. It takes 4 AA batteries and I noticed that the battery compartment is indeed in a 2x2 parallel configuration. I take it from your reply that a 2x2 configuration helps prolong battery life compared to just having 4 batteries in the same circuit?
@mbirth4 жыл бұрын
@@SteveBrandon It's mostly about the voltage a device needs. Serial configuration = same capacity, added voltage; parallel configuration = same voltage, added capacity. The voltage decides if the device runs, the capacity how long it runs. The Pi Zero is rated between 4.75V and 5.25V. Outside of that, it will get unstable, not run at all or even get damaged permanently. Normal AA rechargeables have 1.2V and ~2800 mAh. LiIon 14500 ("AA"-equivalent) cells have 3.6V and ~2600 mAh. The GPi expects 4 AA batteries in series which means 1.2V+1.2V+1.2V+1.2V = 4.8V at 2800 mAh (or if using normal batteries: 4*1.5V=6.0V). Since 6V > 5.25V, I guess the GPi case has some regulator inside. Using 2x2 14500 in parallel, you'd be at 7.2V and 5200 mAh. Actually, I'm not quite sure if the GPi case can handle that high voltage. But if it does, you have about twice the runtime than with normal AA batteries.
@superfreq73784 жыл бұрын
It's interesting to think about retro computer enthusiasts just like Ashens or The 8-Bit Guy ETC discovering people's custom PI builds in the future. Will they be able to figure out what half of it was even supposed to do? I mean people don't exactly document their hobby projects... Though these console cases are more obvious. All those little startups making parts and then fading into obscurity, all sorts of emulators, custom ROMS, software packages, it's enough to keep a historian busy for years. As our devices become less and less repairable, and software becomes more and more universal, I can see this being considered a nostalgic age of freedom, the crux of a transition from relative user independents to uniformity and inaccessibility. Who really knows though. Either way it should be interesting.

I have an older version of the PiCade cabinet, in the smaller-screen version. I'm delighted to see a nice software power button added along with much better access for the Pi - in the older design the pi mounts on the opening rear door of the cabinet and it's all a bit wonky. That newer design looks far better. I printed out my own custom images for the top marquee and around the stick/buttons (they do provide PDF templates, as I recall). It is one of my favourite rPi units in my fleet of oodles of the things.

I now had my own Retroflag GPi for two weeks, and I am quite happy with it. In fact, I am positively shocked how well the humble Pi Zero (W) can run PlayStation games with PCSX ReARMed (not the LibRetro version, the native one, mind you)! So far it ran everything I threw it at perfectly, including Crash Bandicoot and Spyro. Less happy with it's battery consumption tho, but I mended that by buying some rechargable AAs and a charger, because I went through a bazillion batteries per week, which is both economically and ecologically irresponsible. Only disappointments I had to face so far: The screen is at exactly the wrong size for GameBoy games, and MSU-1 enhanced SNES games aren't playable. For GameBoy games, you have the choice between a 1x scale, which is the size of a postage stamp, a 2x scale, which is too large and crops out the top and bottom fifth or so of the screen, or a 1.5x scale, which causes UNEVEN PIXEL SCALING and has to be compensated by enabling interpolation as to not cause a shimmer effect while scrolling. That, however, also gets rid of my beloved crisp pixels! In case of the MSU-1, all SNES emulator cores I tried are either too slow and run at like quarter speed at best, or don't support MSU-1 enhancements, which means no SNES games with CD quality music. Normal SNES games work fine for the most part tho, aside from games that use some special chips, which unfortunately hits classics like Kirby's Fun Pack/Superstar or Yoshi's Island, but in case of the latter we at least have the GBA version. But overall, I'm quite happy with it. By the way, one thing I noticed as a owner of both the Retroflag SuperPi and GPi cases: The GPi's cartridge is ALMOST the right shape and size to act as a to-scale Super GameBoy for the SuperPi. One wonders if maybe, some day in the future, they'll release a revision of the SuperPi that can interface with GPi carts, or even a seperate "Super GPi Dock"...

On their website it states that it's a firmware upgrade port. If you plug something in it, not only that you will not be able to use the thing you plugged in, but the buttons are no longer recognized. Therefore I recommend using a raspberry pi 0 W (the one with integrated wifi and bt). Otherwise you have to disassemble the cartridge every time you want to upload a rom, or run some command line. Once again, thank you for all your work! :D

It's impressive, makes me think about my first Gameboy. i do have a teeny tiny beef about the handheld's design, if this was molded from the original it would of been nice to add the same oval indent for the top Y and X buttons to be consistent with the B and A buttons. Overall it's very impressive, beautiful screen play. :)

I always used my Game Boy with an external battery brick back in the day. So I'm used to the weight of the system without batteries in it.

I use a psp for my snes/nes/gameboy/gamegear/master system/megadrive emulation. It works very well and has the added bonus that it also plays the psp and ps1 roms it was natively designed to run lol

PICADE is amazing, the only thing that needs to be change is the Joystick and buttons with Sanwa ones.

Ya know there is only a select few times when Ashens refers to anything on his channel as 'Fantastic' but when he does you know damn well that he's right.

I have the GPi Case, and it is actually pretty good, would have been nice if they didn't shrink it 30% compared to the actual Gameboy, but still decent. Stewart, you probably should have mentioned the safe shutdown feature.

Some high capacity NiMH AAs might help a lot with battery life, especially if there is any voltage regulation going on.

I really like the GPI case. Wonder if they will make a camera addon to take just as high-res images as the original GameBoy. for most of us, that was the first selfie camera we got :)
