I don't think the Drunken Huntsman is a restaurant in the traditional sense: rather, it's a club based on the communal cooking of meat brought in by the members, who are - of course - hunters. Revenue comes from selling hunting equipment, possibly supplemented by hosting competitions and events with entry fees.
@CetomimusGillii
@CetomimusGillii 11 ай бұрын
Exactly! I've been out here stanning for the ol' "D-Hunt" as the locals call it. This is the first good take I've seen so far! It's really more of a pro shop serving the local Whiterun hunting scene, which happens to involve a lot of alcohol and heavy weaponry. You see, open terrain and thick elk population due to lack of natural predation make hunting pretty boring without the added challenge of binge drinking and greatsword stealth attacks. Anyway, stock was low because HUNTERS ARE ALREADY IN BED BY THAT TIME! They ate up all the dinner because they have to be up when the elk are, no switching to night shift on a whim for them! And yes, the mead supply can dwindle, but everyone pregames pretty hard on the morning hunt, so they're more interested in gettin' a good gourd lick in before blacking out on the warm stones

Hey, they don't smoke their employees to an early grave with their fire pit, and the gourd service is free. Don't knock it because you don't get it, the place is for the locals. It perfectly caters to the alcoholic bow hunting scene around Whiterun, but it might not be for n'wahs who can't take an elk 6 meads into a hunting session
@diogodesterro897
@diogodesterro897 11 ай бұрын
The only time I entered it was when I installed the Helgen Reborn mod, since you have to go there to start the questline. Hilariously, the innkeeper refused service to me because I had killed his brother (the guy who sells meat at the marketplace) for a Dark Brotherhood quest.

It's weird honestly. It's right in front of the entrance to the city but somehow everybody just bypasses it. Me too. It took me years to even know it existed. I literally just didn't know about its existence for the entire first like 200 hours I played Skyrim.
@derfliv206
@derfliv206 11 ай бұрын
I think the drunken huntsman appeals to people who don't feel like involving themselves with the community, especially when it's crowded, as the bannered mare is most nights. The fact that they sell hunting equipment confirms that aswell. There's a lot of hunters in the whiterun region who want a more solitary Inn experience and to stock up on supplies.

I've been there, but the thing is... I didn't realize it was a tavern for a long time. Because based on how people talk about the place, I thought it was a store, selling meat or arrows or something and I would usually do my business in the market area, so I didn't really take time to go in and realize it was a tavern until much later.
@Kipkat13
@Kipkat13 11 ай бұрын
Could it be that the Huntsman is a sort of bring your own meat establishment? The arrows for sale could indicate that it's intended for you to bring your own game. This would set them apart from Whiterun's other tavern and carve a small, yet unique niche. This may also explain the forwardness of the bartender, as he likely knows his clientèle and wants to explain the concept of the business to new customers.
@CetomimusGillii
@CetomimusGillii 11 ай бұрын
You're not far off. As I've explained to several others here, the Drunken Huntsman (or D-Hunt, as locals call it) is more of a pro shop and lounge that serves the Whiterun hunting scene. As elk are abundant and easy to spot on the plains in the region, "hunting" to locals means slamming mead until shooting an elk is harder than popping up out of the stream it's drinking from to take it with a greatsword. Sure, it looks like redneck tomfoolery to the uninitiated, but it's an entertaining rite of passage that keeps the town well fed. Most cities don't have a damn Cloud District, but our hardworking honest huntsmen lay solid foundation for the town's economy, and they appreciate a down-to-earth spot to lick a gourd and black out on some warm stones after a morning spent hauling a 500lb bull elk and polishing off a 30 rack of mead

Yes, a private lodge providing a field-to-table experience. Less oriented around public dining and more toward member events, sporting goods supply, and hunter safety/educational/game prep courses. The centrally located spit would be for classroom demonstration and guided instruction on cooking the day's quarry after a successful outing, rather than serving as the kitchens for an eatery.

As a loyal patron of the Drunken Huntsman, I hope I can explain what has endeared it so much to me and give it a few points in its favor. For one, the Drunken Huntsman is my go-to shop to trade, sell and buy weapons. They've always been courteous and have never been the type to swindle you out of your money. Most importantly, they've made me feel welcome as a Khajiit patron, which is so important when many establishments in Skyrim do the exact opposite. I think the attentiveness of the staff may have been because they're used to greeting customers to let them know they're welcome in a place that may seem otherwise unfriendly. I think it's just two brothers running the place, and if memory doesn't fail me they're also renting their upstairs attic to Nazeem and his wife. So I understand that from an official restaurant critic and public health inspection perspective, you have to be objective, but from a personal perspective, and judging it as a supply store rather than a restaurant, the negatives don't bother me. Thanks for your work as a critic-the heads up on Candlehearth Hall is appreciated. I was planning on stopping there on my Windhelm vacation because everyone spoke so highly of it! But now I'm thinking it would be best to choose somewhere else..

Helpful clarifications: • In the Frostfruit Inn, they decorate with Snowberry wreaths. • In the Drunken Huntsman, the actual meat is sold at a market stall, and all the meat at that stall is hunted fresh. It is owned by two young wood elves. It is a supply store, not actually a restaurant. • The “Sleeping Area” in the Vilemyr inn is where Wilhelm sleeps since he doesn’t actually own a house, and the other two rooms are for travelers. • No detail has been missed in Candlehearth. This one hopes this helps the friendly Argonian restaurant critic put a couple miscellaneous details into perspective.

But the surroundings are beautiful, they have a small pond and a pier which I think should be taken into account. I believe they even have a wine cellar. Candlehearth Hall to me seems like a place that used to be great. I mean we know it's almost 163 years old. Back then they probably had some great success, and with it they bought some of the great furniture and decoration, set up the kitchen and all the spaces, but since then new ownership took over and didn't want to put in the same level of effort. It's likely the xenophobia was there the whole time but everything else has really fallen from the time that earned it its fame.

In Nord culture the hall is the centerpiece of any good communal building. Your meant to stand around the fire, drinking mead, telling stories, and singing songs. The tables facing the walls is completely appropriate since you usually won't spend much time actually sitting at them. When you have the Followers Can Relax mod, some LARP-ey player animations, ELFX, maybe a few custom bards to replace the lethargic ones they tend to hire, and you bring in a big party after a long day of adventuring, these kinds of places really come alive because they totally use the space correctly. The downtime creates some of my favorite moments in Skyrim when all the (unintended) systems come together just right

Well and as he mentioned, the main problem is that contaminated fluids are liable to work their way onto lower shelves. You might have an excuse for putting salt and/or smoke cured meat above other food, but even then, best to avoid the appearance of such impropriety altogether. But if it was really fresh meat, it will be at it's juiciest then, and there's truly no excuse

@@tommarsdon5644 He even mentioned it in the last video, you could just keep it outside. They could just bury some barrels in the snow and free freezer. The inns in Dawnstar and Winterhold could have backdoors into little areas like this for the staff to use. Other than that, everywhere except falkreath and riften has snow. Throw some of that in a well-insulated container and you got a fridge.

I think it's interesting how widely different some areas of the game are underdeveloped or developed with great care. A lot of the small towns are really uninteresting and even bigger cities like Whiterun, while visually interesting are somewhat underdevloped. Otoh, they went a great effort to add little touches all over some buildings, like the taverns. Probably different teams with different priorities and time constraints.

Alright, some more restaraunts to be checked off the list... In Whiterun, you missed Jorrvaskr, which is a bit of an exclusive establishment for members of the Companions, but it does market itself as a mead hall. Since it's an exclusive establishment, I expect good things. We also have the small town inn in Kynesgrove, the Braidwood Inn. We've got the New Gnisis Cornerclub in Windhelm, which is in the slums and doesn't offer beds, but it's a favorite of the Dunmer of the city. In Riften, we have The Bee and Barb, which isn't the friendliest place, likely because of the crime rate, but at least it looks nice. In Falkreath, we have an establishment called the Dead Man's Drink to check out. The small town of Dragon Bridge has the Four Shields Tavern to check out. On the road between Windhelm and Dawnstar, we have the Nightgate Inn, and when you reach Dawnstar, you have the Windpeak Inn. Between Markarth and Rorikstead, we have the Old Hroldan Inn, which is a nice piece of history. Apparently Tiber Septim once stayed there, so I have high expectations. In the small town of Riverwood, we have the Sleeping Giant Inn. Heard some rough things about the owner. Finally, if you're willing to take a boat ride to the nearby island of Solstheim, where you'll be dropped off in the town of Raven Rock, we have The Retching Netch, where you can get a more Dunmeri, specifically Redoran, tavern experience. I've also heard tell of a secret establishment in Riften called The Ragged Flagon that is somewhere in the city's sewer system. Imagine the health code violations! I've heard that the service and clientele are pretty bad too. Best watch your coinpurse.

The Drunken Huntsman got kinda shafted since you forgot something kind of important. It's a hunting shop, and the food it sells is as provisions for longer hunts. The apples and ale are good for long periods of time out in the wilds, and if you noticed the cooking pot above the fire, cabbages are a relatively versatile cooking ingredient. If Skyrim had jerky or dried fruits, those would likely be sold there too. The owner's brother also owns a stand in Whiterun's market too, selling meats from his hunts. It would kinda step on his toes if the Drunken Huntsman also sold meat.
