Linseed oil is used to water proof things and seal off wood. I am guessing they are using it to seal seams in the metal but I'm just guessing.

I used linseed oil on the spokes of my bike wheels i build . the oil dries thick and doesnt allow the spokes to turn@@shawncampbell3191

why is it referred to as a "drift" mine?

I'm not sure, I grew up around coal mines, my dad worked inside mines most of his life, I heard him referr to mines as drift mines. If it wasn't because those mines were opened by digging into a mountain that was showing a seam of coal. They didn't have to dig to find the coal. Perhaps that's how they got that name. I used to go in those mine drifts which I was warned to stay away from by my mom The name that's usually used is portals. Maybe eastern kentucky folks preferred the name "drift mines".
