Part 3 Materials needed, paper, printer, matter fixative, glue, etc.
The paper that I used at the end for my speedometer is the HP Professional Laser Paper Glossy 130g. This seems to have disappeared, but 120g would probably produce the same results: amzn.to/2VJtZPi

Thank you for the shortcuts in R&D for my RGB 2000 Bonneville SSEi Cluster. I pretty much just need a white diffusion layer for the most part. Maybe a little shading so the color changes a little like at top speed and rpm. Mine is molded though so that is going to complicate things. Might have to finally build a vacuum former. Figure out a layering of plastics that works, laminate, form. Seems to be the approach I need to take. Its a pretty large. Cluster so I'm going to have to print a larger format.

Do you have a shorter video showing what worked best as it's a little hard to follow

Unfortunately no. It was one of my first videos and I worked hard to show everything. It is difficult to say which one works best. It is a combination of paper and printer. So the best way is to experiment and see which one is best for you. If you have the same printer and ppaper then it is easy, but the paper is no longer produced and the printer as well.

working my way through your videos, much appreciated so far! have you considered printing on the bottom layer of transparent paper in reverse so you are gluing onto the paper and not onto the ink? thanks again.

Yes, I think I tried that. I mentioned it somewhere in the videos. While it is ok to do that, the problem is that the reverse side is rougher and one cannot adjust the sheets to be matched perfectly. It just does not slide really well.

@@moremolecules So at 22:00 what type is that matte paper exactly ? The name . And do you think paper for photo is good ?

@@raoulraoul7129 I think it is a vellum paper, exactly this one: www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00I44J168/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1. It is good paper, but it did not quite work with the printer. I cannot quite remember why, I think the light was not right, i.e. the black did let too much light through, otherwise it was a good paper

Which light is that? The car comes with leds or whatever the bulbs there. So, one has to wor with what the instrument cluster produces as light.

If i use a laser printer what would you recommend for paper? Would hp professional paper 150g work?

Yeah, difficult to say. I would say that you may need to try it out. I tried all possible papers until it was a match between my printer and the paper. I do not want to say, yes that paper is good as it depends on the printer.

I ended up using HP Professional Laser Paper 130 glossy. It is 130 grams, designed for a laser printer, but it worked surprisingly well with my inkjet printer. You may need to vary the amount of ink that it is dumped with the printer to achieve satisfying results. Mine was on the default settings, amount of ink was exactly in the middle on the scale for my printer. Hope this helps.

@@TheSepul I tried transparency paper, but it is way too transparent and does not block the light too well. It is really shiny. That is with inkjet printer. It is possible to potentially work with a laser printer. It is simple process, the ink must block nearly 100% of the light. The white paper I found does that with my inkjet printer. The white portion left lets light through.

@@TheSepul Not necessarily. I shared what my experience was, but the DIY version is susceptible to many factors, paper, printer, design, etc. This paper worked with my setup, i.e. printer + design +paper. It could be that it would work better with a laser printer with transparency. All in all, that paper worked very well with an inkjet printer, probably most people will have inkjet rather than laser. Process will be similar, but materials could be different. One has to find the right materials.

@@CWallyMan Yes you can, I just did not have an access to one to try. THe problem with the generic laser printers is that they do not produce that good resolution, the inkjets will always beat them in quality. With much more expensive laser printers is different though.

Thanks for the interest, but it is quite a bit of work. If I manage to eventually to screen print one, then I will get in touch. Screen printing will be proper quality, but have not had the time to test one.

Hmm, what do you mean, what did not work out? It did work out with the materials that I had. Now I cannot really do anything about a change of the materials and/or printer that you use. As I have said in this series of videos, it is a printer/paper combination.

@@RecklessGenesis Sincere apologies, I did show which paper and printer worked for me. It is a 10-11 videos on this particular topic. At the end of the day, it is difficult to tell you this paper/printer combo works. In 2 years time, the paper has changed and not produced anymore, the printer is too old and no one can buy it. It is a generic howto video. The general purpose is that it can be done, now the paper/printer combo is a completely different matter.
