I've been gardening for 40 years and I've never had a year without a few failures and disappointments. There is always something that doesn't work out as planned. Sometimes it is out of your control, and sometimes life just gets in the way. No shame. Just take each year as a learning experience and be grateful for everything that you have. ❤

Gabe Brown and his son farm 5000+ acres in North Dakota using regenerative agriculture techniques. As he tells it, at the end of each year, he and his son compile a list of their failures. If they don't have a lot of failures, they conclude that they haven't tried enough new things. Failure is part of farming. :)

I think of failures as huge opportunities to learn new things. Often what I learn is not about homesteading, but about ME, ha ha! And often not flattering, but if I don't own up to these fails, I will just keep shooting myself in the foot. I'm impressed that you guys are willing to show your own fails, as we all have them, whether we own them or not. Thank you for your honesty.

I used to start every season saying I would save seed but failed. A game changer for me was to dedicate an area to grow veg for the sole purpose of saving seed.

The two of you are excellent teachers. You are so good at organizing the information, presentation of the information and what may have been easiest or most difficult, whether it was worth it to you and on and on. We planted marigolds random through the entire garden. Also instead of the tent or v shaped trellis, just use a single cattle fence with t posts to allow more air flow around the plants. I also planted corn next to the cucumbers and peppers below. Companion planting does have value.

I just want to share that I once watched a video from a guy raising cows that was determined to tackle his fly problem, he tried a good number of ways but the one he landed on I liked. He bought a whole big roll of sticky paper and wrapped it around a barrel or bucket with any type of fly bait inside (raw meat), his fly problem was fixed quite well and his cows didn't have a zillion fly's around their eye's anymore. This would be a pretty cheap idea to execute and could potentially add to your wins list next year. If your feeling like getting some vengeance on squash bugs you could try baiting a bucket/barrel with something they like, pretty sure we all know what those things are.

My fail was 50 out of 54 tomato plants, my bell peppers flooded also so didn’t get any bells till fall! I am putting my tomatos and bells ontop of pallets and mineral tubs so they won’t flood out again, my squash and zucchini was wiped out due to spider mites I keep dusting and spraying but just couldn’t keep up with working 10-12 hr days in Tx heat the bugs were just more than I could keep up by myself I bought toule to cover my fall raised bed and it’s working! But the white flies still get in but I just keep spraying hope next year will be easier as toule works but keeps out pollinators also and I have been trying to pollinate myself but that’s getting to be a complete back pain good luck all may the Lord bless your gardens as by his hands we are fed

“Fail Forward.” That is a great philosophy. I have been enjoying your channel over the past couple weeks and finally subscribed. I have been interested in growing things my entire life. My background and education is turfgrass for golf courses and athletic fields. My only exposure now is container gardening with our 5 grandkids, ages 2-9. We all have failures in our gardens, we just need to learn from them. I had a horrible potato harvest, and I always seem to. I can't seem to pick the right place to grow them. I even tilled up some of my yard and tried growing them there but didn't get many. I had issues with blight this year with my tomatoes, and I definitely need to plant them somewhere else. I really need to take some time to write things down from this year's garden, what worked and what didn't and really figure out what I need to grow and what I don't so that I don't waste any space and only grow what we truly need. I think you guys are doing great and I learn so much from you!

Game changer with that chopper: we came across on Facebook where a gals husband took one of those choppers with the bottom cut out and fitted and glued into a bucket lid ( you want a heavy duty lid like a paint bucket lid) then just put that over any 5 gal bucket and chop away. We implemented it this year annd It cuts time prepping WAY down and we do 40-50 pints of salsa and chili sauce and things of that nature. 5 bucks later, 2 tomato, sweet pepper, jalapeños, onions, then you can just sit and makea batch after batch.

Our trick to squash bugs are beating them time-wise. We started all of our squash SUPER early indoors, so that by the time the squash bugs started to show up, we already had 70lbs of cucumbers and all of our squash grown. 🙌 We definitely will do the same again next year.

I always plant my cucumbers on black plastic and grow Boston pickling cucumbers and I have never had a problem I'm in eastern Kentucky and plant in the sign of the feet

Several suggestions - bees need a clear landing area for about 12' out from the entrance. They can fly in and out much faster and make more honey. We usually mow around them in the evening. You can also put down a bag of salt to help keep the area clear of grass and weeds. For the potatoes, I generally can any that are going bad or starting to shrivel in quart jars. Chunks of potatoes can be used in stews, or smashed for mash potatoes. The recipe is in the Ball canning book. 😉

Wonderful 🙌🏼 Such encouragement. We are going to have to tweak our raised beds. I noticed yours are two or three panels high, where as ours is only one… So we didn’t get the depth that we needed. It’s such a blessing to see the fruit of your labors and have family come alongside and help you. I love that your children are able to do that for you. They must also feel like grownups, and have a sense of accomplishment!😊

Our raised beds are 16".. I wouldn't want them any shallower. And yes, we really want to give our children a sense of accomplishment and to feel like they're really contributing.

I have a lot to say, but I'll try to keep it short. First off, it pains me to see that you put together a video outlining your 'fails.' I've been gardening for over 40 years and any attempt is a success in my books. It might be a small success at times, but a success nonetheless. If you sit and wish you'd tried something but didn't in case you might fail, then there's your fail. I love all your videos because they bring me back to a time when we had a hobby farm and both worked full time, sometimes two outside jobs each. Yes, we were tired, but we did it because it was something we'd wanted to do for a long time. Thanks for sharing your stories and allowing us to relive some of our crazy times on the farm. We are both retired now, but I still garden (raised beds, of course!). You have taught me so many things I had yet to learn, so I greatly appreciate that. For such a young couple, you really have your you-know-what together. LOL May I offer a tip about growing garlic? I know you prefer planting spring garlic, but if you reserve an hour or two in October to plant your garlic, you will be amazed at the difference in size and quality. I know you may not like having failures but im sure glad you do, because we can all learn from them. We all make/have mistakes but especially in the garden. Nature is one heck of thing! I know I had an absolute ton of failures but like you said we also had many many beautiful things we succeeded in! I recently found your channel and im loving it more and more with every video. Look into material like "Penoplex" to build your raised beds. It doesn't rot, doesn't go bad, doesn't release any chemicals, and also keeps the soil warmer longer. It is being used heavily and I plan on using it myself for raised beds (also called warm beds)

I prefer to look at things as "learning opportunities" rather than failures. Gardening = learning opportunities. I would encourage you to do the floating row covers for your cukes - make sure they are closed in tight to the ground and put on as soon as they are up and growing. One would have to explore the life cycle for timing. However, sooner is better. I have been using them on my brassica's and it is the only way I can grow them because of cabbage lopper. For your trellis, might I suggest planting some pole beans for annual but grapes would work well on them as well - the pole beans would free up your raised beds for other items. Thanks for sharing.

Use the trellis at the end of one of the beds arched over to the end of the next bed! You could grow anything on it.

I also have a hard time using fresh onion and garlic so this year I dehydrated onions and powdered both the onions and garlic. I use them way more now

The most successful harvest of apples that looked like store bought quality was the years that I finally decided to do something about fruit flies that always blemished the apples really bad. I discovered that just by using a plastic milk gallon jug and putting a flap for the flies to get inside the jug. Inside I put a cup of vinegar, a cup of sugar, and a two cups of water there abouts, and by doing that solved the issue and got a great looking apple and I was really pleased. I cleaned and replenished the container, once I believe during the season but that was it. and on each tree I put one of those jugs and that was a pleasant experience.

What works for me is water, dawn dish soap (a drop) cooking oil. Spray it on plants. Works wonders!!!! Just curious......I don't remember seeing you curing your potatoes? Might that be the problem if you didn't cure them first? That is a very important step. Also, maybe check out Cog Hill Farm. They show how to use a silage tarp to cover your cover crop in the spring. Let the tarp on for a month and you don't have to till. I have a little trick for you for your apple tree's. I plant comfry at the base of each tree. (pest deterrent) then I take a water bottle. Put water, honey, borax and a drop of dawn dish soap. Then put the cover back on the water bottle and drill a small hole in the bottle (as it is laying on its side) The hole should be 1/4 inch or so. This is a trap. So basically you are using the comfry as a deterrent and the bottle mixure as a trap at the base of the fruit tree's. It worked wonders for me. Thanks for the video. We always learn from successes and failures. You guys keep it real and that is what I love about you.

We had diseased Yukons too! Normally I save potatoes to plant but last year we had a bad drought and altho we did save some potatoes it wasnt enough. I went to TSC and got 36 lbs of yukon golds along with one bag of 3 other types since that was all they had. All the potatoes grew well but a few days after harvesting in cure mode I noticed brown spots, mine were darker thatn yours and the disease spread so fast that by the time curing was over we had to toss about 60 lbs of potatoes. The Yukons were the only ones affected so I imagine it could have been the virus like you had, but it did look different and spread too fast to save them! Very upsetting to say the least! Sharing our fails makes us more normal to everyone else and it is a good thing to realize what we need to work on. Thanks

!!!! APPLES ~ NO SPRAY- there is a apple maggot fly traps that is red and shaped like an apple. Just hang them in the trees right when your tree begins to bloom and the fly will go to the apple trap and get stuck. NO Need to Spray! You will have abundances of apple without worm or rots. Do you plant your onions or garlic near your squash? That might help deter the squash bugs.

My 6 year old grape vines have never been pruned...nor the 5 year old fruit trees. Its past time. Gotta be tough and brave the bad fall weather. Cucumbers like fertilized water and partial shade here in northern indiana. Did best in raised beds.

I´m into this style of life for 20 years now, and I have finally learned to be nice to myself! Most of the failures are simply because we were too busy- or too tired!- to do things at the right moment. Please be kind to yourselves...Wonderful that the kids are growing and beginning to help out more.

Loved this video! We had many fails this year. First off, we had too many animals on the property. We cut our chickens down quite dramatically. Our milk cow didn't calve like we had expected and then our bull died.. That was definitely the biggest fail of the year as we didn't have the raw dairy coming in. However, it did free up time to work in the garden and we had the most abundant harvest! I'm canning as we speak.. We harvested more than 1,000 cucumbers, hundreds of peppers and over 300 lbs of tomatoes! Would have shared cucumbers if you were closer. 😊 It was our first year to grow luffa sponges and now I can't live without them. We also got bees this year and they appear to be doing well. Squash bugs were horrid, but we still managed to get a nice butternut squash harvest. And we grew SO much watermelon, which was a true blessing in the summer heat. Didn't grow enough potatoes or onions. We didn't finish our root cellar as we had planned due to money, or the lack thereof. Many more to list, but that would turn into a book. There's always next year, Lord willing ❤️

My cucumbers don't do too good either, but someone told me cucumbers like lots of water and mulching as you go along, my cucumbers did do better this year.

Have you guys thought of garden ducks? We're planning on getting some to help manage pests, and they will supposedly leave your plants alone and just go for the bugs

I know right those pests I saw a gardner who says dont plant too early when the bugs are hungry plant later like july but you still have time to harvest Im trying that next year God willing all the best
