Or maybe he hadn't heard it or read it, so he had no idea what her name was. But judging by his 'I think' I'm gonna say he just heard someone but wasn't sure. His eidetic memory just works on things he's read himself, thinks he's heard he can forget, like that book his mom read to him, he couldn't remember the title because he hadn't read it himseld

Reid has an eidetic memory, but he couldn't remember Garcia's name because he just can remember perfectly information gathered visually (especially things he's read, as implied with the word eidetic). His ability to retain auditory information, however, has been rather inconsistent.

The show changes how his memory works a lot though because he himself said he can only remember things he's read, but in some episodes he can remember exact conversations/events word for word

Actually it’s not weird that Reid would forget the name. In fact Reid says it himself in the season 1 finale. His memory is based off what he reads not what he hears or is told. If we go off this then it’s possible that someone told Reid that there would be a new person named Garcia joining the team but since he didn’t read that someone new was coming he could easily forget the name. It’s just a theory.

But Black Queen was her online/hacker handle, what she was identified by, and they basically said, 'youre an excellent hacker, come work with us and we won't imprison you for your illegalities online.' Sorry been a long time since I watched those episodes. Hope that helped.

Guys, this was a flashback. Which means the first time they interacted in the 1 season was not the first time they met. This is a flashback of a time when both Reid and Garcia were new to the team.

Yeah I agree, but he sometimes also remembers things he hears very thoroughly. I remember this one scene where he repeated something he had heard word for word, so it just leads us to believe that he remembers EverYthing. But idk lol that’s just a thought

*For those who are surprised Reid forgot her name:* Reid remembers things better when reading/seeing it, he does not remember things as well when hearing them. He does remember certain things after hearing them, though it is usually something involved a case. People remember things they think about while things they don’t tends to get pushed back and forgotten. Reid most likely wasn’t think about Garcia’s name since it wasn’t immediately important for a case and forgot it. It’s not surprising given everything in his head, he most likely has a lot going on so forgetting a name that has nothing to do with a case is understandable.

Such a cute scene! I was thinking it was from the very first episode, and then saw that it is a memory from a later episode. Thanks to everyone who posted which episode it was from. I was looking for it on the first season DVD, and was puzzled that Penelope and Derek knew each other already in the first episode of the show. That flashback right there was the beginning of a beautiful friendship!

Correct me if I’m wrong but I think in an interview they said that Derek calling Garcia baby girl was a complete accident, or at least it wasn’t in the script. So Garcia came to the conclusion that well he calls her baby girl and she can’t call him that so she started coming up with other nicknames like the famous “chocolate thunder.”

Watch the scene where they say goodbye to each other, and then watch this scene, again. You can feel their friendship. That's how I met my best friend: by accident. He was knocking the dirt off his cleats, and I was walking out of the training room of our high school after my work was done. I was basically the equipment manager for the athletic trainer, and he was the kicker for football team. One moment, I tell ya, could give you many moments.

all the comments about Spence "forgetting" her name...well if he never read it his eidetic memory wouldn't have stored it...much the same with the poem in The Fisher King Part 2 that his mom read him and he needed Garcia to help him recall it because his mom read it to him so it wasn't stored in his mind. So if he heard it in passing it is completely plausible that he wouldn't know it exactly. But he did remember enough to get close
