Seen her live in a small club and she's the first artist that I've seen that got multiple standing ovations during her show. At one point she just stood there, deeply moved, beaming all over her face, revelling in the recognition. She's not only an exceptional singer but also very humble and down to earth. Really sweet personality. My favorite performance of hers with PMJ is Maps, a Maroon 5 cover. There's moments you can feel the emotions exuding from her, like anger flashing over her face. She truly is special. BTW. another vocalist you might really like is Heather Nova. Try her song "Island", it's really good. She starts it off with some kind of wailing that reminds me of a mythical siren and in live shows she sometimes prefixes that by saying "Children, don't try this at home".

@@siypic I don't think there's any less talent than there has been in the past. On the contrary. I wouldn't call it a "sea of mediocrity" either. Sure, theres a lot of mediocre stuff, but that's mostly because now everybody can broadcast themselves, there's fewer hurdles than there traditionally have been. But we've also seeing truly exceptional artists - maybe two decades ago, who would've known Dimash? Diana Ankudinova? So Hyang? Oh, and people calling it talent is my pet peeve. Talent only gets you so far. What we see with Morgan is skill. It's hard work. Talent is your starting point, which she probably had plenty, but she also has put the work in to become as good as she is. I don't think Juilliard can be just breezed through, no matter how much talent you have

Oh, man, I've been searching for this comment for ages! I was trying to find the name of that other artist you mentioned-Heather Nova!! I kept thinking it was under the video on PMJ's channel and went hunting there more than once. Then I finally found this in my history as I was trying other methods to find the sought-after song & artist and it occurred to me that maybe I'd seen the song here instead. Now I just need to figure out a way to keep like a list/database for stuff like this. Because it drives me nuts when I find amazing songs and/or artists but then can't remember them later on because it's just too much to keep track. I've lost and then refound the acoustic version of "You Said" by Eurielle multiple times now, as an example. 😅

The third time I saw Morgan live, I bought a per-performace package and we got to meet her and Doug before the show. I asked Morgan if she's ever heard back from Aerosmith's camp. I totally agree. It makes my hair stand up and brings tears to my eyes every time I hear this performance. I honestly believe that this arrangement rivals the vintage Aerosmith original. Look up the same song covered by a young girl (12-13) named Jaydn Rylee, she does her cover with another female teen Aviv Cohen and they crush this song. @@busfahrer09 No need to be condescending. What they ment is probably that this is one take without any cuts, like in mainstream music videos. You hear exactly the music that was played during filming, no autotune or extensive post production. Also: a lot of the times they really do just record ONE time and take that. Haley Reinhart's rendition of "Creep" is an excellent example. She hopped into the studio after work and they had very limited time in the rented studio. What a great reaction. I love how you analyze the technical aspects. Morgan James is a phenomenon in her own right. She is what happens when you take a Juliard School of Music Graduate in Opera with the soul of Bessie Smith, and turn her loose. I love how she tunes the chords to perfection. The glissando and slides are so difficult to do properly, and she makes it seem easy. So you know, PMJ was the brainchild of Scott Bradley. He is the pianist and arranger for all the performances. Most, if not all, of their videos are first take. All of them are a single take, with one stationary camera. Nothing fancy to interfere with the music.

Steven Tyler told in this song that he had this one dream when he was a three-year-old boy lying next to his father while he was playing the piano. "That's where I got the Dream On chordage from". He finished the lyrics when he was 14 years old. All he ever wanted to do was make music, that was his dream. "Dream on" is about dreaming on and on until your dreams come true. Steven Tyler has put his soul on the tablet here. And then Morgan James comes around the corner and sings this already impressive song to the ground. I've rarely been so impressed with a cover version. Especially when you know where "Dream on" comes from and what the song means to the writer Steven Tyler. Wow! Just Wow! What a great interpretation of this song. Thank you for that.

This duet is "casual perfection!" You have Morgan and Haley kicked back, barefoot, on the couch in someone's home. The acoustics are terrible. They're accompanied by a so-so acoustic guitar. Their blend is perfect and you fall in love with this classic song in a new and different way. It's a song for your playlist! The video is here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/rdyPi8ur3NzOqZs.html

@@rcinsley - I'm not a fan or Morgan's, I actually cant stand the way she sings, but I do like her in "Dear Prudence" You're right, you do fall in love with that version, but I disagree with the acoustic being "So so" The guy is an extremely good player and really impressed me. I'm not going to go into all the reasons why, but he used a lot of different techniques that sounded great.

It would be fun to hear your analysis of Hannah Gill, too, as long as you're doing a PMJ run. Her contralto is like if plush velvet and molasses had a baby and it was a voice. She and Casey Abrams are an amazing pairing on Gnarls Barkley's "Crazy." Also, the clarinet solo there is ridiculous. And Scott Bradlee, the pianist on this, is the genius who writes all the PMJ arrangements.
