The quick tools for the shutoff valves are definitely worth the investment. I'm a commercial maintenance tech for a large condo complex and we use the same fittings and when you have your upper half jammed in a vanity it makes life easier.

The Rigid multitool in great. I installed a new sink, faucet, and sprayer when we bought our house. Pretty much the only tool I used. Also used it to replace faucet on my mom's sink. Way better than trying to stick the smallest wrench you have in there.

Nice choices; if I did more sinks, I'd probably want a few of those. For reaching up to connect or remove supply lines, I've used crowfoot wrenches, which fit on the end of socket-set extensions. They're inexpensive, and don't take up much space.

Im constantly changing out shut off valves for a property manager. The tool i use is the rigid 2 &1 which has increased productivity. The best about the tool is you can actually break loose the nut with one hand by setting it roughle 2 inches apart. As far as the brass ring, i do not replace them. The reason is, if the stopper was originally tightenred too much, it will indent around the pipe. When you go to piut the new one on, you're likely to have a leak and will have to cut the pipe back furthe to get passed the ring indent The ring and nut dont go bad so they are good to reuse. Just clean them up if it's needed. The tool i use a lot and one you did not mention is a basin wrench. I used the rigid bssin wrench which allows for different settings. Some sinks are very hard to get under and that wrench is a life saver.

I've never removed a old compression ring either. They won't leak if you can get them tight enough. He did mention a basin wrench, his just goes on a socket extension.

I’ve been changing out the full turns that never shut off 100% with 1/4 turns for it seems like 10 years… I’m always like, “who keeps using these” 😂 Is the Rigid 2 in 1 the same as the One Stop? I have reused a ring/nut before… I have had certain existing nuts not work with certain stops though… or maybe their threads were just messed up. A master plumber friend of mine says the same as you though… it’s best to leave them, but then I wouldn’t get to use my tool and it’s so satisfying 😂 I had a basin wrench… probably not a good one as I never liked it. The Pipe Vise one I have goes on a 3/8 ratchet extension. It’s ok… not great.

I'm in So. Fl. All new construction is mostly Pex A and even older houses have PVC for for drains and vents. We have some CPVC down here on the hot side. My house is 3 years old all Pex A. Have never seen cast or galvanized down here.

Be thankful 😂 Galvanized and cast drain lines are easier to deal with now with Fernco’s… but the water lines stink to work on. It is neat to know what other people deal with and funny that we can do the exact same job as someone else, but it be totally different based on where we live. Thanks for sharing 👍👍

I have the old & new versions of the Ridgid EZ Change Faucet tool. The new one has more options for the amount of fittings or supply lines that it works with. & on the strainer basket insert piece on the new one you can flip it & it’s a deep socket 5/8” I think but don’t quote me on that. But yea the newer version is definitely more versatile & is more of a one stop shop wrench for faucets. & yea check out the Ridgid one stop wrench for installing & removing angle stops. It’s like the one you mentioned but Ridgid plumbing tools are the industry standard for a reason. + lifetime warranty, just can’t beat that.

I have the Ridgid one stop wrench works well, it's basically four tools in one. I also carry a 5/8 Ratcheting wrench, if you are replacing supply lines just cut the old ones off and slip the ratcheting box end over the cut off line and take the nut off the stop quickly instead of what feels like a hundred turns with an open end wrench..

I have found the Basin Buddy by Superior Tools to be worthwhile. It is slimmer for fitting in tight spots with hard lines like I frequently run into. This morning it was the only thing I could have fit onto the nuts of the bar sink I was working on without pulling the sink from the top which is probably how this faucet was installed

The most important tool we're all using under the sink is a plumber's cleavage. Here we have a mix of every piping system: galvanised threaded in older homes, soldered copper, pressed copper, pressed galvanised, pressed stainless, heat-fusion jointed polypropylene (PP), PEX (there's like 8 variations of them ATM) and even glued PVC water pipes (fortunately this had not gained too much popularity, because in our climate with below zero winters PVC pipes used to get brittle and crack). Fortunately every of those is almost always terminated with a threaded fitting (1/2 or 3/4 always female). So it makes life easier when installing stop valves. We hardly any use compression fittings on water, however we use them to terminate heating pipes (copper and PEX). Also a sharkbite-like fittings had a very short go, but fortunately and surprisingly we're too reasonable to use it :)
@MORGANSMaintenance
@MORGANSMaintenance Жыл бұрын
I run into Shark Bites all the time, I haven’t seen them leak yet.. but I really don’t like them as stops. They let the stop just spin around and in my mind… I just don’t like something that seals off pressurized water with a gasket to spin in a circle. It seems like Pex for water lines and PVC for drains is becoming the norm in new construction here… occasionally you may get a Mr. moneybags that still does copper 😂. I’ve noticed the same thing with PVC water pipes here… I really don’t even like touching them, can of worms.
@Stefan_Kawalec
@Stefan_Kawalec Жыл бұрын
@@MORGANSMaintenance Here many of PEX system has this nice feature of spinning around. Knowing how that technology works I'm perfectly fine with that. Form me it's one of the positive features of PEX. I think that the biggest issue with sharkbite is not the way it works, because it's quite efficient. Many industrial compressed air fittings have the same mechanism. That problem is it's ease of use. Because everyone can install sharkbite there's absolutely no standard installing procedure (despite that there's is one, but people don't give a f...). And because it's relatively fail-safe, people tend to use it unreasonably. It's on the opposite side to copper which requires maintaining rigorous procedures. If you don't clean the pipe or fitting - leak, not enough flux - leak, sloppy soldering - leak, flux left on a pipe - leak, etc. And here's the same: copper=reach client. Last time I encountered PVC on water was 10-12 years ago. If I see that shit anywhere I just don't take the job, especially small service ones. I just recommend getting rid of that abomination.
@MORGANSMaintenance
@MORGANSMaintenance Жыл бұрын
@@Stefan_Kawalec yeah our Pex does the same… it’s still somewhat movable, but it takes some effort. It stays in place unless you spin it, the Shark-bite just spins all the time. Also, like you said.. it’s different not relying on a gasket so I am ok with that spinning too. You are right. Most people probably cut a pipe and just throw a shark bite on. No deburring, no cleaning, no checking depth, no nothing. I do carry Shark bite ball valves on my truck for emergency pipe burst… it is nice to be able to slip it on a pipe with the valve open, then shut it to stop water. I’m not necessarily against them (from what I can tell they work well) , but The only Shark Bites I typically use are caps for temporary use while remodeling until after drywall to install stops. They are easily put on and removed.
@Stefan_Kawalec
@Stefan_Kawalec Жыл бұрын
@@MORGANSMaintenance Exactly as you said - technology is OK, just users spoiled it. Additionally all piping with this kind of fittings (with grab rings) should be properly fastened and secured to limit any unwanted movement. I saw pipes releasing themselves from the fittings because there was 8 m (25') of hot water pipe with 3 T's just hanging loosely in the attic. We have a similar problem with heat-fusion jointed polypropylene. It's a very reliable although very time consuming technology, but PP welding machines became so cheap that almost everyone buys them and poses as a plumber. Sloppy joints, wrong diameters, no insulation sleeves, no expansion compensation etc. On the other hand I have a sentiment towards PP. It was the first modern plumbing technology I had learned. So much easier that threading pipes and so much faster than soldering copper. Every time I smell that melted plastic it brings me back to my 20s.

I have the ratcheting pex crimp. My coworker let me borrow his when I was helping my grandfather out. I also found you can use 3/4 pex crimps on garden hose instead of hose clamps. I'm wondering in a pinch if a 3 jaw puller would work.

I didn't have much luck with ferrule pullers. The ferrule would dig in and then the pipe end would mushroom. I found the Dickie Dyer "Olive Splitter" which splits the ferrule with a satisfying snap and doesn't damage the pipe. I recently changed out over 20 angle stop valves for 1/4 turns in a client's home and was glad that I had that tool. Though, they can be hard to find in the US (easier to find in the UK). I'll have to give that tailpiece cutter a try.

Yeah I have had the mushrooming problem in the past with different pullers… so far not with this one. I will have to look up the splitter. The tailpiece cutter works great. 90% of the under sink piping is that material in my area. Occasionally run into actual glued PVC.
