The woman saying that she “struggles with same sex attraction” breaks my heart. I hope she’s okay… I didn’t even grow up Christian, but hearing homophobic remarks from pastors and other Christians when I was young had a major effect on me. People outside the church will support you!!

I left in 2012. Took 6 years to remove my records. In 2020 I had my last outburst at my parents for believing in a church who was started by a charlatan pedoph!le. I’d say I’ve REALLY only been completely unaffected by it within the last year and a half. Cheers!

I come from an extremely small mormon town. My family is soooo deep into the church. My great great great, whatever is Jacob Hamblin, so my family is die hard. A couple of months ago, I commented on an Exmo video and had a guy respond to my comment saying my ancestors weep for me. Turns out he was from my town. He knows my family. 🤦🏼‍♀️ I can never escape my hometown, let alone this religion. I have surrounded myself with people who have never heard of it and telling them the stories have them rolling. They think it's crazy. 😂 I hope everyone who has escaped is doing okay. It's hard out here. 🖤

So i was raised Mormon and right before i left on my mission i was like “i can’t go try and convert people to something i don’t have faith in” and that led to my de conversion. It has been so fascinating and intense to deal with my family hating on and judging me for it. My growth in rhetoric and epistemology has led me at this point to think “holy &$?! I was so brain dead” lol. My mom (who is not an active member) will still run defense for the church when we talk about it, and it is so painful when she will literally tell me I’m lying when i tell her about the history of the church.

"People are a product of their time, so we need to judge them by those standards." Sure. People were being called out for their racism in the 19th century. Colonialism was heavily critiqued in France as early as Rousseau, potentially earlier. Indigenous people were protesting European settler colonialism as it was occurring. So whose standards? Do white ones only count? Or are we going to consider other voices? These a-historical apologetics drive me up the wall -- colonialism, racism, sexism, etc. have all been critiqued contemporarily. If you want to judge something based on the standards of a given time, you have to know what those standards are, not just assume that they're bigotry.

On the last girl taking into context if your not taught to question you also are unable to argue effectively, and being female she is defending something that tells her she is the lesser human. I grew up in the church. I did it "right" and didn't lose my recommend and obeyed the laws almost to obsessiveness...I tried. My priesthood "worthy"father was extremely abusive. If I told people, he was my priesthood leader (meanwhile I didn't know about my half sister who was two years younger for 35 years and watched my siblings suffer). I'm out, 52, no community, finally diagnosed DID with cPTSD. And guess what, being raised in a high demand religion or cult can lead to disassociation... so not only my father's abuse, my mother's emotional abuse, BUT the literal church shredded my core identity since birth. The greatest thing my three children did, was leave the church and leave me questioning. Then I drove deep into my faith and found it lacking. The creators used science and math to make this universe. Anything that says that is counter intuitive to faith, denies any potential creator. Oh look, it is all messed up, religion that is.

This is the first time I’ve seen the exploitation of already disenfranchised communities of people of color acknowledged! Thank you 100% for doing that!!!! As a “convert” from a young age who left in adolescence it was a conflicting and confusing environment. I was the only non-white person at every church event. I also didn’t fit in the humble, service oriented, homemaker bubble. That lead to me being quite literally separated from the group. I’m happy I listened to the “GET OUT” voice.

Regarding the comparisons between Mormon and Muslim culture, as a former Muslim (current atheist) I think there are many. You are right, though, that in western regions, Muslims face much more discrimination that Mormons. I think some Christians over-play the similarities between Mormons and Muslims while under-stating the similarities between themselves and Muslims. All people are similar at the end of the day, and it is sad to see so much bigotry coming from high-control religious groups. Edit: just wanted to add that I loved the video lol

As an "exmo" who grew up in the church, it was interesting to hear some thoughts from converts. The discussion around shame, especially, drew up some heavy emotions. I wonder if converts eventually lean into shame the way that other more thouroughly enmeshed members do? When i look at my multigenerational member family, i notice more and more how their lives are run by shame. I still struggle against that feeling every day, and often wake up from nightmares where ive been shamed by bishops or church members.

I want to run into that “Target Guy” to tell him how I feel about his TikTok and about my experience being told I was less righteous in heaven than my brothers because I look more like my Samoan Dad than they do…because my skin tone is darker. That racism from “flawed Brigham” still exists in the church today. I’ve seen it. I’ve lived it. I’ve felt it. Deep. I was sad as I was taught in YMs that exhalation meant that I would loose the my Samoan features when I died as I would become white and “pure” in heaven. I was taught this as a teenager, in church.
@charlesmendeley9823
@charlesmendeley9823 Жыл бұрын
Unfortunately, this happens if you create a religion in the 19th century. The fact that it is racism based on skin color already indicates that it was invented in a culture with black slaves and white slave owners.

Did any of you feel “spiritually untethered” when you left the LDS Faith? I deconstructed my 50 year old religious faith and walked away from it because I realized that none of my childhood questions had ever been answered by the Southern Baptist Church (if g-d is all-powerful why did he need a human sacrifice to forgive me? If Jesus turned water into wine why can’t I tell anyone that my parents drink alcohol?). I was very devoted but now I feel a but unguided. I know I’m not, but I feel that way. Yea, I would say that growing up in Catholicism, there’s not as much talk abt drugs and alcohol and all that… just to respect your body and be healthy. I appreciate that in modern times, the Catholic Church doesn’t have as much culture of shame or guilt as ppl talk abt existing in the past. Also, the framework and doctrine allows for a lot more diversity and a spectrum of strength in various beliefs, and range of participation… just a lot more religious Tolerance. There’s a preference for what to do, how to be, how often to do things… but at the end of the day, there’s just a couple teachings they say you need to believe in, but one can’t judge and shouldn’t judge, another person nor their relationship w/ God. I enjoy learning abt and exploring other religions/cultures bc I’m an anthropologist, so I try to be objective, but there’s a lot of issues in Mormonism that give me pause… and the sheer number of ppl that identify as LDS is a lesson in psychological manipulation and authoritarian control. I mention my denomination bc in learning abt other religions, it makes me grateful that I was raised in one which allows for critical thinking and individuality. It’s not perfect, but the fact I don’t agree w/ all it’s doctrines isn’t something I have to hide or feel bad abt. I empathize alot with y’all bc you grew up not only in a religion, but entire society surrounding it, that didn’t validate how wonderfully unique and special each of y’all are… and wanted to homogenize y’all into some “perfect” Mormon. Very happy y’all found, and are sharing, your voices!
@McRambleOn
@McRambleOn Жыл бұрын
Very good discussion abt authoritarian/high-control grps & indoctrination- it’s important to explore the psychological aspects & how those aspects occur in everyday life & normal relationships… however, the concentration of them in LDS is the problem. The harmful/dangerous teachings, every type of manipulation from every angle, as well as the lack of transparency & absolute GREED is scary dangerous. The fact the LDS church’s name is actually a Corp… ugh 😣 Can y’all discuss revelations? IMO, one of the most problematic things is how influential & powerful the idea of personal revelation is… how one can literally control others or direct their actions & decisions, whether it’s a person in their own family or a bishop & young adult, or someone preaching abt the future to an audience of ppl… they can manipulate others with their “revelations”, yet there’s no way to tell if they’re “true/false”; thus, it’s rife for an abuse of trust- intended or not. The potential for abuse and harm is so big. The fact that the brain can manufacture them & one doesn’t even know that it’s not a message from God, is really sad… but even scarier, still. I agree, an org that doesn’t promote critical thinking, and actually demonizes it, is a HUGE RED FLAG.

Tanner needs to shave and Samantha needs to get rid of the bangs (like Kera). Note: my comments are NOT sexist...addressed both Tanner and Samantha on purpose.

And you Sam, stop with the hair flipping. You think it comes across as subliminal, but no, it's obviously intentional . Childish.

You think you’re coming across as helpful and thoughtful but you’re just coming across as mean. It’s no coincidence that Tanner, the man in the group, feels the least self-conscious on camera. Also telling people what you think they think as if it’s fact is a sign of a juvenile mind IMO-you literally don’t know. I’m well aware of my on-camera ticks and have tried hard over the years to eliminate them, but it’s challenging, which you may or may not know depending on whether you’ve ever had a successful KZfaq channel and received mean-spirited comments about your looks and personality and character constantly for years.

@@SamanthaShelley Pay no attention Sam. You are absolutely fabulous. You have gorgeous hair, and it can't be flipped enough!

@SamanthaShelley next video get Tanner to flip his hair. Everyone should flip their hair as much as they'll want.
