This school day was interrupted by a violent earthquake that sent students taking cover under their desks and then running for the doors. Video from the school shows students and staff rushing to get to open spaces like playgrounds and roads. It happened in China’s Szechuan Province. The quake measured 4.8 magnitudes and there have been no reported deaths or destroyed buildings, although some structures did sustain slight damage. Inside Edition Digital’s Mara Montalbano has more.

So, I had a mixed reaction to this. I was so glad and grateful to God that no one was injured. Seeing those kids so scared for their lives made me want to cry and then the teachers trying to be sure everyone took cover first before thinking about themselves broke my heart. The fact that the pupils knew those basic safety measures made me so so proud of them and their teachers. Then the fact that it was school-over and no more classes for that day, got me so excited and giggly for those kids.

I was in 3rd grade during the 2001 nisqually quake. My poor music teacher had no place to go as he was stuck in his chair while one of the kids spread out like a starfish. That quake took forever it felt like. Then the fire alarm went to essentially have us leave into the fields. Haven't felt an earthquake like that since. Schools have to go through drills like this every year.

Haven’t had drills of any kind in over a year, which is unfortunate because just last week not one but two incidents of people taking part in illegal activities (never specified) near my school, never had a fire or earthquake but you’d think that and intruder drill or two would’ve happened (there was supposed to be one a few months ago but it was canceled due to some board representatives visiting and we never had one)

US earthquake scientist here. This is meant as an early warning system for further away cities. Cities in close proximity of the epicenter do not have any early warning, but as the shaking migrates away from the epicenter at approx. 2.5km/s the early warning system will be transmitting shaking levels at the speed of electricity. At a certain distance the warning will appear before the shaking. Thus giving critical time to prepare such as, halting surgery or stopping airplanes from landing.

This is more common then many people think. You can walk through the denver airport and have tornado and earthquake shelters. One night in my part of the world, we had an earthquake at 2am. It was the talk of the morning. We need to remember that its not the earthquake that hurts people, its the items that fall from the shake. In their city, they would have some level of preparation because of common earthquakes.

I still remember the Earthquake...of all places...in Maryland, about 11 years ago. Around 8:00 am, at my work in the mall. For some reason, I could not walk right. I kept tripping over my feet for about 15 minutes...then it all stopped. I thought something with wrong with me, that my equilibrium was off. Around 1.00 pm, on that same day. I went to the food court. As I was ordering my food I saw the menu on the wall moving. I turn to see the escalators and the columns swaying to the sound of thunder. That was when everyone looked at one another and calmly walked outside.

Not if the building falls over on you. The correct thing to do is duck and cover under or near a sturdy piece of furniture. Then once the earthquake passes, get out.
