Part 4: • Morris Day on Forming ...
Part 2: • Morris Day on Prince's...
Part 1: • Morris Day on Joining ...
In this clip, Morris Day spoke about reconnecting with Prince after he formed "The Revolution," but was unable to secure a place in the band as a drummer. Instead, Morris Day became Prince's videographer on his first couple of tours. Morris talked about some of those experiences like touring with Rick James and Prince getting beer bottles thrown at him while opening for the Rolling Stones.

I'm not the biggest Vlad fan, though I have to say that if you understood the story of Morris Day and The Time, as well as how interviews are structured when interviewing people such as Morris Day, It's going to be more in depth conversation. Especially considering the fact that his best friend and collaborator was Prince, who helped him get his start. Questlove does and did the same thing with The Revolution as well as Jimmy Jam on the Questlove Supreme podcast. Just keep watching and you will eventually see Morris's story unfold.

Wearing underwear and trenchcoat is androgist?
@Indiegirl007
@Indiegirl007 4 жыл бұрын
@@lauraveney1412 Yes. Metrosexual is when you are a hetero man who enjoys fashion and takes care of his appearance. Brows arched, manicures, waxing, moisturising. Androgyny is when you are playing with things that traditionally belongs to a certain gender, and mixing them together. So, being a man, an obvious man, but you are wearing a thong, knee high boots, and a trench coat, chest hair out, facial hair out and eye liner, with a deep ass voice, just chilling. That's androgny. Other example of androgny are Grace Jones, Boy George, Cindi Lauper, Sinead O Connor.

@@Indiegirl007 He was not wearing a thong, knee high boots and I would hope most men have chest hair. What do you folks do when you go to the beach run in fear of chest hair. People did not have t hose hang ups in the 80s. The only thing Prince did that was odd was were high heel boots. The rest of that stuff was him trying to sell records. If he walked out in public with his underwear, legwarmers ( which all dancers wore back then) Okay it would be a problem. Rick James was wearing hooker boots and lion cloth and no one batted an eye.

@DeCurtaRican 4 жыл бұрын
M. Jones : We never got to see the full range of Rick’s abilities. I’d compare those two to Magic Johnson and Michael Jordan. When Jordan started to come into his own, Magic was reluctant to surrender his place at the top of the mountain. And then, Magic’s early retirement skewed people’s perception of who was the “greater” player. Rick was established as the R & B king. Prince came on, was light-skinned, multi-talented, putting out fire on his albums, and had a gender-bending stage style that raised Rick one or two levels better. So of course stick was threatened. It didn’t help that Rick’s career was on a downward spiral by 1985, when Prince had just taken off, and Michael was on his own planet! Tbh, it might be the reason Rick self-destructed prematurely.

@James Riley Well, sticking out one's lips is not a feminine trait. Mick Jagger and David Bowie were well established rockers by the the late 70's so they may have gotten a little more respect. Prince was a 19 year-old performing new music and wearing nothing but a Speedo, high heel boots, and a trench coat trying to perform in front of a crowd that was not familiar with him. Bobby Z, Dr. Fink, Mark Brown, Lisa, Wendy (who was backstage as a guest of Wendy), and Dez Dickerson had their take for their own perspective. Matt's is the funniest, because he said since he had a special relationship with Prince, the band members talked him into trying to locate Prince. He said when he called Prince's home phone, Prince answered the phone. That flight back to Minneapolis was well timed, because he did not stick around long.

To those who'd say that Prince had a more successful career. Basically that's true. But it had much to do with Prince following a musical formula that was geared for more crossover appeal. Rick stayed more with soul and funk. Prince did more pop and rock sounding songs that contributed to his level of crossover. Michael Jackson followed a similar musical formula. Then Prince blew up with the movie Purple Rain. Rick felt Prince had stole the idea for Purple Rain from him. Rick was planning to make a movie that may have been kinda similar to Purple Rain. It's been said that Prince found out and then came out first with his movie Purple Rain.

Yeah but musically speaking Prince was a prodigy compared to Rick, playing piano since age 7, then being a guitar wizard by the time he was 12 or 13 and his music teacher said he was adept at music theory by the time he was 14 or 15, Prince be using chords like add 9's, sus 2nds & maj 7th's sus 2nds, for he has a background in jazz & he kills in rock too, so yep he was a threat

Actually...you do outperform the headliner every chance you get. That's when booking agencies realize your a bankable live act and offer you a headliner deal because they know that even though your an unknown, through word of mouth alone you'll pack the house. We were told that as a band we were supposed to upstage these motherfuckas every chance we got. L.O.N.S., Wu Tang, KRS, Van Halen, Metallica, Chris Brown and Redman and Methodman are all cut from that cloth. Motherfuckas are supposed to fear having you as an opening act. And it ain't personal. Fuck what you heard, bro.

@Future Society Of Gentlemen That's crazy though, because Rick always said that their music was so different from each other that it wasn't an issue. Prince was always weird and it took you a little while to get into his songs. But with Rick, the minute you heard the beat drop you IMMEDIATELY started jammin. He had way more funk in his music. Maybe I need to get the book

Here's how I've heard it. Rick felt that Prince stole from him. Rick was planning to make a movie that may have been kinda similar to Purple Rain. Somehow its been said that Prince found out and then came out first with his movie Purple Rain. Then I've heard that Rick was planning to work with Vanity. Somehow Prince came and got her to work with him. So if all this is true then maybe this can explain Rick's issues with Prince.

@djvlad My father was in the radio business for his entire adult life. Around 1980, when I was about 12 years old, he had passes and my two sisters (14 and 10) and I saw Rick James in concert in my hometown of Macon, Ga. I'm pretty sure we were the only white people in the audience that night, and we were kids lol. I often wonder what the other concert-goers thought when they saw us standing in our chairs and rocking out without any adult there with us. I remember Rick saying at one point "I don't smell any weed yet!", which of course resulted in everyone lighting up. There were clouds of smoke everywhere, but it was no big deal to us because my dad was a major pot smoker anyway. Everyone was super cool to us and it showed me at an early age the power of music and how it transcends things like race. It was just a great concert with a lot of wonderful fans and Rick put on a helluva show.
