Thank you Matt, it's an interesting instrument but there is relatively little online information about them yet, so this is a very useful addition to the online reference base.

Thank You Teacher. Just when I think there's nothing New you come out with this. I've been playing the Great Pipes since 1996. Two years ago I got a set of Border Pipes which I Love. I talked to my Mom a couple weeks ago. She is 84 now and her father was a piper in the Black Watch in WWI. She didn't know there was anything but the Highland Bagpipes. Now You bring out the Reel Pipes. WOW. You have surprised me again. What a Beautiful, Beautiful Sound. I have to get s set now. I thought my life was over with my heart attack in 2018. I could not even play one song on my bagpipes. But over the last 4 years I have been getting stronger and can play three songs now. I am So Grateful for your tutorial on KZfaq. You are the Best Teacher Ever. God Bless.

I'm sure glad you made that point about moving the bridle on the EZdrone reeds..... That applies to EZdrones for the highland pipes, too. (Can't really go into how many times I've messed THAT up.....)

Very insightful, especially the tips (9+ min) on tuning pipe drones with EZ reeds. Maybe you have the beginnings of that drone tuning video you've been planning to do!

Thanks, I’ve been considering getting these. Im thinking of the mouth blown version so I can pickup on them quicker. I’ve tried bellows and they’re do awkward.

"Filter" as in band-pass filter ? I think what they mean is, basically the chamber is a Helmholtz resonator that filters out unwanted frequencies and sweetens the overall final sound.

I'm thinking of getting a second chanter to tune to bagpipe temperament. I usually keep my Reelpipes closer to equal temperament.
@MattWillisBagpiper

Yeah, the bagpipe-tempered low G on this chanter sounds a bit off to my ears, but the tuner says otherwise. I'll likely sharpen those G's up a bit for my own preference.

Do you know what the wire bridal on the reed is for exactly? I made the mistake of messing with the original mcCallum reeds in the beginning and could never get the chanter balanced, especially with C and low A. I ended up getting a Chris Apps borderpipe reed and haven't looked back since. Seemed to be way more stable and less fragile than any other reeds I had
@MattWillisBagpiper
@MattWillisBagpiper 2 жыл бұрын
My understanding is it changes the amount of air the reed takes. Tightening it opens the reed (making it harder) and loosening it closes the reed (making it easier). At least that’s how I think it works.

Hey, Matt, I recently ordered a border pipe chanter. I have a set of McCallum folk pipes and they're absolutely amazing, but my only complaint is that when I play with other instruments, I get drowned out if I'm not right next to a microphone, and even then, it's hard to hear. I found out that the border pipe chanter will work with the folk pipes, but my big question is, will it fix the problem of being drowned out by other instruments? I'd appreciate whatever you have to say about it.
@MattWillisBagpiper
@MattWillisBagpiper 2 жыл бұрын
The border pipe chanter is much closer to the volume of the highland pipes than the smallpipes, so you'll likely be heard just fine. Didn't know a border chanter would go with the folk pipes. You may need to open the drone reeds up (as the border chanter takes a lot more air than the smallpipe chanter).

@@MattWillisBagpiper well, it does take a plastic reed. Here's what it sounds like in a set made by the people I bought it from. Note, the pipes are significantly different. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/d96pjdtevLSXmH0.html

Hi Matt. I know you said you have more sets of bellows driven pipes and these reel pipes made it to the back of the closet. Is that because you find your other bellows driven pipes more fun/pleasing to play? Out of what you own, which set of bellows driven pipes do you find more fun/pleasing to play?
@MattWillisBagpiper
@MattWillisBagpiper Жыл бұрын
I recently sold this set. The reelpipes volume was the real deal breaker for me. They are 90% the loudness of the highland pipes, so hearing protection is required. Plus there weren't any clients requesting this instrument, and any venue that could handle the volume of the reelpipes, the client would prefer highland pipes, so...

Is there a small amp the you would recommend to pair with the Blair chanter??
