I feel like Morrissey made Marr a bit snobbish and overly analytical, but I also think Marr grounded Morrissey in the same way. When The Smiths broke up, the two lost each other, which I think had a profound effect on the both of them, but was more detrimental to Morrissey than Johnny. Johnny seems very calm, now more than ever, whilst Morrissey has become only more Morrissey-esque, almost a stereotype of his younger self, and of course musically he's a bit boring sans Marr, in a similar way to how I'd imagine Jim Morrison without Ray Manzarek. It's not terrible music by any means, but it's no where near the calibre of work they were doing together

anyone who dislikes what they are saying about joy division is not understanding their point, they are not looking down on joy division nor saying they were not an incredible band. They were stating the fact that at the time in which Joy Division existed they were not celebrated as much as in todays society as we have a romantic outlook on stars after they have died, if you read into Joy Division they will say themselves at the time in which they existed they were not superstars nor did they have millions of pounds, they were normal day to day men who made incredible music and lived rather normal lives in comparison to todays 'stars'.

I'll never get tried of Morrissey talking about how awful music videos are. Especially in this KZfaq age we're in, where such low-brow content has quick and easy access. We all know shit like K-pop won't be popular if people actually cared about music instead of how pretty the boys and the videos are.
@marianhalcombe3305
@marianhalcombe3305 6 жыл бұрын
I think things like Kpop are loved for different reasons. If not for the music, people may watch for the aesthetic of it. That is the problem with with videos, though. The music simply support the video and adds to the aesthetic experience. I believe its art is visual, so I'm hesitant to call it *complete* shit... Music today has changed. I don't think that young people fall in love with it anymore... most likely because there's no meaningful substance to trigger an emotional, rapt response. It's all about head bobbing and shoe tapping. It's very sad. Music has become less about art and more about money. The industry continues to give the cat water, because it's cheaper, and the cat drinks, for water is all it knows. If the cat had tasted milk, it would shock the cat's taste buds and kitty would never drink water again...

@Britsican69

The flowers had nothing to do with "hippydom," they were there to make the band look more effeminate which is what Morrissey/Marr both wanted. Fans would then take them to their live shows and throw them at the band. And they never made any videos...all of The Smiths' videos were made without their permission by a man called Derek Jarman, most likely because some greedy record company wanted to cash in on their popularity. I think Morrissey and Marr have both gone on record saying they thought they were crap!

The flowers were also Morrissey's homage paid to Wilde. And in regards to the videos, in his solo career particularly, Morrissey claimed that he never cared about the videos. He gives someone the song and they interpret it and create the video. He's rarely involved. I think he just does what he's told. The record companies probably require them for publicity's sake.

I always wonder if it is necessary to be this full of yourself when you are young and in a band. Perhaps that's the driver ? Funny thing is there are bands that people who watched this video also love - yet all of them claimed to be the only interesting band with any substance at the time. Many of them hated each other. Notably Robert Smith v. Morrissey. Here is what strikes me the most. They all claimed to be too good for TOTP - only to appear on that show anyway the moment they were invited. And I'm saying this as a fan (with 20 years distance now). The only true indie band by that standard is the Cocteau Twins, who turned down every TOTP invite cause they just could not get themselves to lip-sync to their own song. I give them huge credit for that - credit I cannot give to the other bands. I'd say that Johnny became more modest over the years - Moz remains Moz :)

Morrissey looks older than he is here. He's put on weight. He looks better in the video for Dagenham Dave.

For the sake of competition and keeping relevance, I guess . Their words doesn't take away anything from the Doors or Joy Division.

Andy Saunders sucks The Doors were great The Smiths were good but Morrissey's solo stuff is samey shit that is basically the same song done sideways over way too many albums.
