The way he described the Dolls is exactly how many people view the Smiths. To be around such a short time, to accomplish so much, and to have people actually take time to listen to them and understand where they’re coming from. It’s a beautiful thing to have true fans over mainstream success. Not that mainstream success is necessarily a bad thing, but having the smaller clique of people who truly appreciates and understands you is something prodigious.

This is the greatest songwriter of his generation. I don't care if you don't agree.

Growing up in NW Detroit in 70's, The New York Dolls were gods and loved. Dolls play many shows around the metro area - and we loved 'em. I saw the new version at Cobo Hall, warming up J. Giels Band in June 1976 - and they rocked.

I saw the Dolls over several nights when they made their '73 LA debut at the Whisky. Arthur was bandaged up and miserable but played a bit here and there as I recall. Opening band Mayson from W. Virginia, with their mellotron-tinged prog/glam hybrid and androgynous look also provided a powerful part of the show; they eventually changed their name to White Noise Pink Noise and signed w/Bearsville but were shelved. Even at this early point on the timeline The Dolls were the proverbial 'hot mess'. Watching it all at ground zero at point blank range remains a vivid and palpable memory.

I used to ride bus no 4 on Santa Monica Blvd with a nice blonde haired guy named Arthur. We sat in the back. He always got off at the Mormon Temple. I had NO IDEA who he was. Thanks Morrissey for the documentary.

Morrissey is mostly on the mark in describing the NY Dolls. I dislike and disagree with the cliche, " they were ahead of their time." A error. They were right on time for those of us aching for a band to shatter the MOR morass that was so prevalent at that time. It just took everyone else 30 years to catch up. The Dolls simply couldn't sell enough units for a major label to justify keeping them on contract. I loved them because they were the real thing. He's right--" those were very dark days."

It is great to see the master curmudgeon be so effusive, and so lucid about something he really, really loves.

The documentary that this interview is taken from is done really well. It doesn't get bogged down with interviews from people nobody cares about. Arthur was the ONLY guy who couldn't turn his time with the Dolls into a life long career... but he had the guts to share that & risk being a joke where as most would never dare to. I hope he's finally found peace.

It's funny I graduated in 86' so I was right there in the Smiths/Morrissey era and though more a Zep rocker I did get into Morrisey, who seemed so cold and cockey and callous but at least now he seems to have a heart of gold. I saw him around 1991 and he played a blink and you missed it concert, which I also though wow the balls of this guy. It was seriously maybe an hour at best.

Yes Morrissey Yes, NYD were and still are a great band, love them, love The Smiths. That's all that needs to be said.

For those that don't know, when JT & JN left the band the Dolls had live commitments that needed to be filled. Enter a New Yorker by the name of Blackie 'Goozmen' (spelling?). After he & Arthur went to L.A. & formed Killer Kane. That ended & Blackie formed the band 'Sister' which became 'Circus Circus'. After that, he changed his name to Blackie 'Lawless' & formed 'We Are Sexual Perverts' better known by the nomenclature as W.A.S.P.!!

Morrissey totally nails it when he explains about those dreadful 80s hair bands that sold like 20 millions copies of every album. It must have been so frustrating for the Dolls watching those fake third rate derivatives cashing on what they were doing ten years before, only without the art, originality and realness.

I'm always fascinated and surprised by who inspired the artists I really like but I don't remember the New York Dolls being that big a deal and I am by no means trying to disparage them or their work in any way but other than Morrissey I have never heard anyone really talk about them. Of course musicians have a much better ear for music than I ever will and they hear things I miss so I'll just chalk it up to that.
