The "Super Shelter" concept has become so expansive, and so varied in its applications, that it probably deserves its own, standalone book or survival course by now. It's gone well beyond just being a subset of Kochanski's teachings.

Having had Mors as an Instructor he was most assuredly knowledgeable and paid homage to the 1t Nations people who had taught him up in the far North. He made those models for up to 4 and that group was in tshirts while the fire was up. Good memories thx

Honestly, I've found that adding an ordinary household spoon to a kit is important. It's durable, doesn't take up much space, and its shape and mouthfeel will be familiar to you, which is a psychological plus in my opinion.

The average eating utensils weigh practically nothing and it beats trying to carve something all to hell. If you're on a leisurely car camping trip, I guess trying out your whittling skills might be alright. I like to have ready made useable utensils and rope and medical items at hand and ready to use immediately and not have to improvise something, especially during an emergency. One should learn the skills to improvise things, but not solely rely on carving a cup or finding medicinal plants when you're ill

Great vid on adding to Mors Kochanski survival kit. Mors was known for “the more you know the less you carry” His super shelter was brilliant for the boreal forest winter survival.

I went to a karamat class about 15 yrs ago and mors taught us the super shelter it got down to 15 below zero at night and stayed around 60-65 degrees during the day and 50s at night with a long big fire 3 paces away mors loved big fires

Improve, adapt, and overcome. I respect all the work Mors has done for survival and bushcrafting, but I also appreciate the adaptations made by practitioners like yourself. As advances in technology and materials present themselves, it is only right that these are consider.

One thing I suggest for bushmen over 40 who wear glasses, is a 10× jewelers loop. Just a cheap plastic one that will fit around your eye, hands free (about $4). For removing slivers, reading tiny print, starting fires, or any other tasks that require more vision than your standard glasses can afford you. I carry one daily and have 1 in my truck, car, bug out bag and edc kit.

Love this! Great way to have a suspended bed instead of a hammock, unless the bin liners tear, which would be a disaster!

I have found a piece of parachute fabric to close in the leeward side helps with condensation and ventilates the shelter. Packs up pretty tight too.

That was an excellent video....many, many little tips tp remember. I was cutting the bags on both ends and not filling them with debris...just one great tip after another....great job...from an ex military army guy

I really like a raised bed in the style shown , have not used leaves etc for the additional insulation, will definitely try that.

Good evening Major. There's nothing wrong with improving on something. I'm quite that Mr. Kochanski wasn't born with his talents for bushcraft. He had to learn from someone. And no doubt HE improved on a few things he learned from others. You learned from him and the Army. We learn craft from you, and live to teach it to others ! As of this afternoon, I have one "emergency/survival kit" 125% complete, and a second one just at 80%...need another Sawyer water filter, and a tarp/poncho & wobbie (the Swiss ponchos would require cutting and taping/sewing for shelter use). Looking forward to your next !

A solid temporary fix for the lack of grommets on a poncho is simply finding some kind of filler material for the primary corners something like a small piece of wood with rough edges knocked off or a smooth stone of some kind along those lines then you just loop some cordage around it after a light overlap and that'd be a temporary idea.

@@Horde334 those Swiss ponchos are designed and sewn to be worn (10 years ago I got 5 brand new for $15). They don't lay flat when open like U.S. poncho. I have a brand new U.S. poncho and matching wubbie arriving this week. So I'll just use the Swiss ones for what they were intended.

If need be you could heat rocks up next to the fire (not rocks that have been in water) and push them near or under the shelter for added heat. Great video. Thanks for this

I slept in one of these almost identical to this and it was hot! It was negative 20F and I had to strip down to my base layer. Pretty darn awesome stuff! Thanks for the video!

Yes excellent training! My favorite time of the year. Fall and winter. Always like the hobo fishing line stuff. Great little kit in itself. That Military sewing kit sure is worth its weight in titanium. Huh? Thanks for sharing and reinforcing the knowledge passed down through the ages. Now I'm going to have to watch your other videos to see when you slept in this type of shelter, I love this idea. I wonder about it working up here in the cold country as the supershelter used a raised bed already with no insulation underneath so that the heat from the fire could also go underneath the bed and warm from below. You my also have mentioned this in another video, but Mors recommended sizing the pot to the need. His smallest option was 1.8L but he also used much bigger pots for winter which is why your jacket didn't fit. But love this innovation!

Great video! Great set up! I personally like two racks on the tripods..bunkbead style, I use the other bunk to keep my gear dry! And other things close at hand, easy to grab from other bunk. Keep up the training as always!

Love the idea of insulating the bed with leaves/vegetation. That works in my area (midwest). I also love the idea of closing off the ends of the tube as in my area along the Missouri River, mosquitoes will eat you alive.

Hi , Andrew ,neat shelter design, will reserve comment on it until you've tested it well, as for the Mors kit, the original list of items that he recommended would still work today, but I agree whith you that advances in bushcraft items can give us some better choices now, but there's nothing wrong whith The kit he put together and if we were SOL,we'd be glad of it. Your videos demonstrate various kit in action, and can save us a whole lot of trouble in selecting items to put in our go bag, and for that you have my thanks, stay safe Major, best wishe's to you and your's, Stuart uk.

Excellent video, i liked the bed idea., thank you. Add leather gloves protect from cold and fire building. Besides those tweezers i added a nail clipper. I actually carry one connected to my swiss army knife.

Excellent Andrew! I am not a purist, i.e. only using "old school" materials, using modern technology and materials are better ( in my opinion) i.e. cordura nylon vs cotton canvas has more advantages. And yes, I still use wool, flint and steel, etc. because they remain viable options. FYI: I have commented on many videos (like latest from Shawn) that a medium weight translucent showe curtain makes a great door for the super shelter, using 550-cord through the grommets to open and close it - just a thought.

ha, i built that one two years ago and had a pleasant night despite it being a particularly mean night in a particularly mean winter in the upper blackforest. one thing i did different, which was the lower section of the grabber. i staked it down to be almost flush with the ground. less convection and more reflective heat from the fire, though i recognize that is a rather minute detail.

Great video that's what my kit looked like when I was young and poor haha 😂 I'm not being mean at all, it was simple and cheap so I could still have a blast. We used plastic from job sites that has that fiber reinforcement and mule tape from the electricians I used it many times for hoisting my pack up higher in the tree to keep it away from animals among other things.

Interesting. It will be something when you test it. Being elevated it won’t be on the same level as the fire so it might not capture as much heat as a super shelter and fire that are on ground level.

@@bendover4496 we will see. The super shelter is built on the premise that the radiation of heat from the fire passes through the plastic and is caught in the shelter in a greenhouse effect. I think that has to be line of sight. If there is enough snow the fire might be on the same level as the shelter.

That shelter setup is a great idea, and I'm embarrassed that I hadn't thought of stuffing a hammock before. Like Nessmuk, Mors was a small guy- I think that's how he got his thermal in that pot. That, and I think he wasn't using a 2L pot, but more likely a 3L.

If you made the plastic go all the way to the ground you could allow the hot air to convect all the way around and underneath you. I did a similar set up with a hammock.
