I feel bad for Kung Lao. He's a cool character and a very strong fighter in his own right and yet everywhere you look, people compare him to Liu Kang or say he's not worthy of being the Great Kung Lao's heir. I mean, seriously- he's beaten Bi-Han, Goro, Kintaro, and Shang Tsung and Quan Chi at the same time.

The hat exchange with Erron Black is my favorite, and it also highlights an issue with his character. Every other MK character with an iconic weapon gets at least some focus on a secondary weapon in 11 except him. He's all hats.

you can say the same with liu kang with his fire. but he has martial arts. kung lao also pairs his hat abilities with martial arts. if he doesn't have his hat he still have his skills. And also doesn't Lao have some spiritual powers too?

It's especially bad because Kung Lao more than any other character loses a majority of his combo strings and certain special moves without his hat-like if he has his orbiting hats equipped and has them orbit him or his opponent, he will lose a lot of moves and have some altered. Fujin has the right of it.

@@numa2k147 either way it’s annoying to deal with. It’s especially annoying because literally half of these people knew Kung Lao in MK9 and still treat him like shit. Like Jade and Kitana….as if Kung Lao wasn’t the one who came up with a way for both him and Liu Kang to rescue Kitana or Kung Lao helping Jade to walk after she was injured by Skarlet.

Might be thinking of Liu Kang. Don't recall if it was ever brought up in the story, but one of the intro dialogues between Liu Kang and Kung Jin goes like: Kung Jin: You never could accept me. Liu Kang: I am aware of your proclivities. Kung Jin: Wow, thanks for the vote of confidence! (Much like a lot of the cast, Liu Kang was kind of a dick in MKX.)

Kung Lao gets special credit as a character for me, because to this day, of all Mortal Kombat characters, he is the only one that has successfully given me nightmares (I started playing this when I was 9 years old with MK9, and it had a certain fatality, so yeah. I’m a guy. There’s the hint for you.). Which is cool, because of the two of the Shaolin, they’re both so amazing, but I think he just slightly edges out Liu Kang as my favorite of them both.

I'm an old-timer from the late 80's, so I was a little kid when MKII came out and Baraka gave me nightmares (creepy monster with blades in his arms.) Also the Dead Pool stage because a character would always drift away as a skeleton after the stage fatality.

I hated the whole overconfident with a fragile ego they made him in this one. Honestly, NRS can't stick to one idea or design, seriously, have you noticed how characters changed personalities and even outfit in every game? They can't commit to something and it only results in weak stories and weak characters, the end result, full on retcon ex-machina.

MKX Kung Lao is not _nearly_ as witty. As a matter of fact, Most of the dialogue for the pre fight scenes in that game are bland and uninspired. You learn a lot more about the characters individual personalities in 11.

@@vanquished1809 Distorted isn't the correct word. More like just focused on one aspect of his personality. Speaking of which, previous timeline Kung Lao barely had a personality and was almost humble to the point of self-loathing.
