Continuing the journey through the Mortal Kombat franchise, we arrive at the incredibly exciting, Mortal Kombat 2. Once was the highest grossing video game of all time, and has been labelled as one of the best fighting games ever made, Mortal Kombat 2 was Midways Tour de Force and certainly helped put Mortal Kombat on the map as a franchise to stay. New finishing moves, deeper lore, expanded roster and more await!
These videos are designed as a series and thus are best watched in order, to watch my coverage of the previous game click here,

For those too young to have experienced the arcade at this time, it's near impossible to explain the impact MK had. There'd be a constant line, 5-10 people deep, plus a crowd around the macine. Win and people clap. Pull off a fatality and people cheer. Die and you move to the back of the line, your shame on full display for a crowd to enjoy. Ah, memories.

My favorite MK of all time. Countless hours playing this at home on Super Nintendo, at friends' houses, at arcades, on store displays (Toys R Us, Sears, K-Mart, etc.) One summer I ended up in this summer "day camp" which was basically just a roller skating rink that was a place for parents to get rid of us during the day time in the summer, and all we did was play arcade games. With MK2 being the most popular one. What a time to be alive. What an especially *amazing* time to be a kid 😎

This has to be the best sequel to a fighting game… almost ever. Like the reception at the time of its release was just off the charts. I can’t even explain how much of an impact this made when it was released.

As much as I would like to agree the factual best fighting game sequel of all time is certainly Street Fighter 2. It pretty much defined the template for the entire genre
@merciless41582
@merciless41582 Жыл бұрын
Mortal Kombat along with Street Fighter changed the fighting genre and are the pioneers of the fighting genre. They made other developers step up their game (no pun intended) when it came to developing fighting games. Even games tried to mimic You had Way of the Warrior, which was a no doubt Mortal Kombat rip-off, on a $700 Panasonic 3D0 system. That's why games like Primal Rage, Killer Instinct, Samurai Showdown, Soul Calibur, Tekken, Bushido Blade, and others became so successful. Because of Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter. Playing MK1, MK2, MK3, and UMK3 was every 90s teenager and adult's dream. We were addicted to those games like a drug. I remember when the arcades were packed you had to wait a while to play and some arcades had multiple machines of the MK games.

Those summers of 1994/95 were just paradise. Young, no cares in the world, every minute spent outside with friends or in an arcade playing MK2. It was perfect. Got so good at this game that everyone gave up trying to win. Playing as Shang Tsung and beating everyone with every character was just the best - especially the Kintaro stomp fatality.

As a kid I dedicated so much time to mastering the first two MK games, especially MK 2. I was able to do at least one fatality for every character in MK 2, but I mastered Sub-Zero, Scorpion, and Reptile because they were my favorite. I still remember the blood code for MK 1 for Sega Genesis which came out when I was 9 years old. I'm 40 now. It was A B A C A B B, lol. I had an awesome childhood.

The absolute pinnacle of the series. The feel, the gameplay, the darkness, the hype and the frenzy was very real. I have never, ever seen crowds in arcades like I did in 1993-1994. Much of due to MK2. There were crowds around the game just watching people play and waiting for their turn.

MK2 is by far my favourite MK and the one I played the most. Arcade, Sega (ocassionaly) and at home on the SNES port. Maybe it was 'cause its timing, since I was young enough to have to much free time but old enough to really appreciate it. To this day I remember almost every move and finisher. But objectively, I admit UMK3 has maybe the best gameplay wise but, also objectively, MK2 is the best in everything else. Its new characters are all stapples to the franchise, something that very few other MK's debutants have achieved. First appareance of Shao Kahn, still one of the greatest bosses in fighting game history. It was the last time one had to fight each of the twelve playable characters in the ladder aside of Kintaro and Shao Kahn. MK2's 14 characters' arcade ladder is to this day the more extensive.

It seems tier/ranking videos are more popular than just lore videos. It isn't even close either. I would recomend going forward devising different catagories to use with short format top 10 type lists. MK male ninjas ranked. MK female character tier list. MK grappler tier list.MKs hardest hitters tier list. Etc etc. Of course the lore videos are great and I like them but 1.6m views on all 99MK characters ranked and then less than 250k views on all the lore videos seems to tell the direction, or at least another format to do as well. Just an idea. EDIT: 2.6m views on the tier video vs 17k on this lore video. I like your videos so I hope to see your channel grow. This I think will help. Just don't be disingenuous when making tier videos because no one likes click bait. GL!!!
@DonCritic
@DonCritic Жыл бұрын
Yeah the ranking video was really popular but that has been up for two years, whereas these ‘explained’ videos have done really well for my channel in only one month. I entirely agree with tier rankings can come off as disingenuous. Some channels can pump them out and it leaves you to debate their authenticity. I personally have really started to see a difference with these explained videos. The comments and general reception is very positive whilst ranking videos and tier lists cause lots of people to be negative when it doesn’t line up with their own personal tier lists. Also for me, I used to make a lot of ranking lists when I started KZfaq, but making them purposefully makes you look more harshly on games so you can fit them into a ranking which can make them exhausting to make. I enjoy talking more positive about video games, detailing their gameplay mechanics and lore/characters, which the Explained series allows me to do. I don’t need to be negative or critical, I can just relax and enjoy making more content 🙂 but thank you for the comment, I love having these conversations. I appreciate it so much!

I think MK2 is the best one of the older games, classic MK peaked here, 10/10, it improved on everything MK1 did right. MK3 was ok, I like 4 too, but 2 is amazing. Just like 1, at the time the best home port was on PC. It was massive, it came on 9 floppy disks!. It looked and played almost arcade perfect, but it had some minor details. To this day when playing the old PC version it drives me insane that Scorpion walks like Sub Zero instead of walking with his arm up hahaha. The PS1 version is disappointing, the load times, missing voices, and incorrect details makes it worse than the SNES version. The SNES version is awesome, I think only the PC and arcade versions are better. The Genesis version is missing details in the stages, the music is wrong, it plays ok but I think they were lazy. The MK3 Genesis port proves the console could have done better ports of MK1 and MK2 closer to the arcade.

Not when it came to fatalities, they were a downgrade compared to MK2, at least MK2 still remains as the king on realistic gruesome fatalities!

Ultimate MK3 perhaps, but the standard version of MK3 does not have a better roster. They got rid of some of the most popular characters (Scorpion, Raiden, Kitana, Mileena, Johnny Cage, Reptile, and Baraka).
